Can you use an adapter that connects to the HDMI port instead of the USB c port?

I will soon be building my 1st complete gaming PC in anticipation of MSFS 2024. A fun project to keep my75 yr old mind agile. As such I have been doing my best to learn by watching and reading all I can. A link to this video should be included with EVERY major PC component sold. Your presentation is clear and concise and non-threatening to even basic newbies (I'm not), and anyone with minimal aptitude WILL be able to accomplish a successful build. Thank you for this educational and entertaining presentation. A mini speaker and GPU support bracket are now added to my part list -Thanks again

Have just built my first pc for 13 years and I have to say this has been the best video I have seen on supporting this process by a country mile. I watched this 3 times from beginning to end before starting and have come back to this video another 10 or so times as I have built, changed on reinstalled windows and hardware. I cannot thank you enough with your calm and patient approach to EVERY part of the process, nothing was missing. Even though you did not install a GPU you so kindly covered this so I could. If I could buy you a beer I would. However living on the south coast of England it would be a bit of a journey. PC build: BeQuiet Shadow 800DX case, MSI Z790 Tomahawk WiFi Max, i5 14600K CPU, 32GB 6000MHx RAM, MSI Geforce RTX 4060Ti GPU, Crucial T500 2TB SSD, BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 5 Cooler and BeQuiet 12M 850W power supply. Thank you.

@NerdSidekick

I assume you are asking if you can clone a drive that is not the C: drive (or the boot drive). Yes, you should be able to do that as long as the cloning software let's you choose the source drive (which I imagine all do).

You want to clone the C: drive to the D: or E: drive? Yes, you can do that. If you want to boot from the D: or E: drive, you will need to change the boot order in your BIOS. Sorry if I'm not answering your question. I"m just not sure what you are trying to accomplish.

Will this work when there are is already a 3 monitor setup? I have a home studio and find my work flow suffers when I leave my vocal booth to start or stop recording. It would be so helpful to have my laptop in the vocal booth to handle recordings.
@NerdSidekick
@NerdSidekick 2 күн бұрын
Yes, this should still work even if you already have 3 monitors. Just understand that you may experience a lag on the laptop, which could impact timing, if that matters, when recording your vocals.

My laptop USB ports don't transmit video data at all. Sad. To extend my monitor to two other screens, I need to use an HDMI port to 1 monitor, and Miracast to another.
@keithbyram5414
@keithbyram5414 5 күн бұрын
You should be able to get a USB to VGA converter it will come with software disk then you can hook a 1 in 4 out VGA splitter or VGA to HDMI converter n hook to at least 2 more monitors that's what I have setup now 😎
@edydossantos
@edydossantos 5 күн бұрын
@@keithbyram5414 I didn't get it quite. You mean, in this case, my laptop would need a VGA port, correct? My lappie has three useless USB-A and one (also useless) USB-c. None of them can transmit video. The port that I use is an HDMI, that I use as I've mentioned above. Could you please elaborate a bit more about your solution? Cheers

@@NerdSidekick Thanks for that my man. For sure my laptop has two of these blue USB 3 ports, however I am almost sure they don't move data at 5G/s, but 1.5 G/s instead. Any other guess? BTW they don't have this "SS" symbol alongside the characteristic USB tree. Does it mean it's not a "legit" USB 30.? I've checked my USB drives and they are: * Universal Serial Bus Controllers - 1 x Inter(R) USB 3.10 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.20 Microsoft - 3 x USB Composite Device - 1 x USB Root Hub HUB (USB 3.0) * Universal Serial Bus devices - 1 x Camera DFU Device

I have seen many USB ports that use logos or symbols that don't follow the normal symbols. I believe manufacturers do this because they can save money if they don't pay to license the standard symbols from the USB Implementers Forum. They come up with their own symbols to get around the fees. So, your ports may still be SuperSpeed. From the info you posted, it certainly appears that your computer offers USB 3.1 speed. You can see detailed info about your ports with USB Device Tree Viewer: www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtreeview_e.html (download links are at the bottom of the page).

The build tutorial is without reproach with just one major caveat. Theres no way you skip how to keep your Intel 13th and 14th gen CPUs from imploding. Sure Intel released a bios update that STILL does not supercede a proper underclock of the CPU, we have companies who didnt exp widespread CPU failure bc they underclocked these cpus out the box. If this was a Ryzen chip, ANY of AMD chips are simply plug, play and forget about them. Currently thats not something you should do with this generation of Intel chips, maybe their next gen, YMMV.

It was unfortunate timing on the problems with the Intel CPUs. I bought the parts and made the video many months ago, before the problems were fully understood and acknowledged by Intel. I definitely encourage viewers to carefully consider what CPU they will purchase. I personally have not experienced any problems with my CPU, but I have not used the computer a great deal.

Why'd you choose a 13th gen Intel processor when the deterioration issues with them and 14th gen processors are well-known at this point? While I realize Intel released a mircocode update recently, I'm still very surprised to see someone building a PC with an affected processor, especially after talking with Micro Center about the issue during the part selection process for my first custom build and being told the issue isn't/may not be fixed.

what you didnt do was give A WARNING about the intel chip that it will crash a lot and could died Owners of Intel's 13th and 14th Generation CPUs have been complaining for the last year that their machines regularly crash during games and other high-power scenarios. The company now says the issue is caused by elevated operating voltage, which is caused by a flawed microcode algorithm and IS GOING TO DO NOTHING A BOUT IT intel say the failure rate is 2% thats a lie its more like 90% i had 2 chips out of 2 crash

I've found this instructional guide just at the right time. I've decided that it's time for me to build my own computer. Being of the same generation as the instructor, I found this not only useful but also reminiscing about when I got my first computer 30 years ago, opening it up and seeing what appeared to be a jumble of wires and cables. Not to mention, hard drives of such proportions, that could break toes if you happened to drop them. This has now given me the boost in confidence to proceed and get this computer built and working. Thank you so much.

So what do I do with the old drive? I want to use it still as and storage drive. Do I just hook it back up after the close and format it? Thanks
@NerdSidekick
@NerdSidekick 12 күн бұрын
I usually keep the drive unused for a few days after cloning, just in case something didn't work with the clone. But once you are confident everything is working fine, you can definitely use the drive for additional storage. You can reformat the drive, or just leave it as-is. Just make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the newly cloned drive rather than the old one.

Make sure you are extending, not cloning your screen. How did you attach the extra monitor? What kind of port on the computer? What kind of port on the monitor? Did you use a splitter which would show the exact same thing on more than one monitor?

Superb video. Many thanks indeed. My first build successful. I watched and re-watched this every step of the way. The only thing missing for me was any mention of installing Linux rather than Windows and how that might impact the updating BIOS and installation process. Perhaps you could make a video just of that process on a new-build PC - that would be very helpful. I didn't bother updating the BIOS. Linux installed fine. Thanks again 👍

It could be that the USB C port you are plugged into does not support DisplayPort video, which is probably required for the USB C hub or docking station to display video on a monitor. Check the specs for the USB C port on your computer to determine if it provides DisplayPort.
