Sonic Team shouldn't have worked on anything until they had a Sonic Game out... They betted on Nights being the next generation of platform games and it failed to be so.. Mario 64 captured the publics imagination

Better than Turtles? Not by a long shot. You review is spot on. While I like the variety between shooter and beatem up stages; the beat em up portions are super simplistic in design; as all the rangers play like each other; with the exact same moves. Also this game is like half the lenght of either Shredder's Revenge or Streets of Rage 4 (or any of the recent modern beat em ups for that matter). With the recent updates; it is not bad, but it still needs alot more work to be on par with either of the ones mentioned.

As an old fan, i admit it had it's flaws, such as the game control s. But then again, the level design, ambience, soundtrack and few reimagined things done much better than the original, made it one very good example of how remakes should be done. Plus, they new dialogues and voice acting of Lara were by far better done compared to the classic. Still though, old is gold.😊

Marvel's missing out on a fortune by not making an X-Men arcade revival. I know game reviewers are sick of pixel-graphics and retro style, but I like having those kinds of games in the mix again. Doesn't stop me playing BG3 for the 6th time, but I like the choice.

Hopefully, if a hypothetical Saturn game had come out that resembled what SRB2 wound up being, it'd avoid SRB2's huge problems of controlling like the characters have butter on their shoes, and horrible level design though. it's impressive they got doom to do that, but it's actually not very pleasant to play.

Had I been in charge of Sega when the 32 bit era was coming, I’d have made the Saturn a 3D powerhouse, but still with a good amount of 2D functionality, easier to develop for and backwards compatible with Mega Drive and Mega CD games! I’d also ensure a strong 1st party lineup, including a version of Virtua Fighter 2 that includes all of VF1’s content (looking back, it’s still a letdown that VF1 on the Saturn isn’t as big a package as Super Street Fighter 2 on the Mega Drive!) and I’d definitely have a new Sonic game ready for the US and PAL launches! Sonic 4 would have some 2D stages with 3D effects (like Clockwork Knight) and some 4-way stages (like Bug!) while Sonic 5, which I’d aim to have out halfway through 1997, would be a full 3D experience that can rival Mario 64!

Even with the recent patch that has fixed some of the gripes I had with the game, it doesn't even come close to reaching the admittedly high standard Shredder's Revenge set a few short years ago. I wanted to love this game, and it has some interesting ideas, but there just isn't the depth to keep me coming back/

If this game was given more time to cook, and sega of Japan developers weren't such dickheads and cooperated with the sega of America team with the nights engine, they could have really had something very different for a sonic game, but super special nonetheless. I would of played the shit out of it. Oh and I used to highly regard yuji naka, but as the years have gone by his apparent douchebaggery keeps showing and unearthing more and more. It is a good idea that they canceled it for the state that it was in, especially since one guy almost DIED due to health complications from how hard the team was pushed, but glad there is still a handful of fan projects that have really brought this back.

It's really hard to express to younger gamers just how big Sonic was in the early 90s. I didn't really read the magazines back then (I was 10, and rentals were a better use of pocket money), so I wasn't aware of X-Treme's existence. Based on everything I've seen since, the game looks like it would have been utter crap. With both Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot releasing in 1996, it would have been a bloodbath for Sega. Like franchise killer tier bloodbath. While it was a big mistake to have no original Sonic platformer on the Saturn, at least they were able to somewhat save face by focusing on Adventure instead.

They tried to make a Sonic game but could never make one that was up to par to match the previous games and the popularity and hype so they scraped it. End of story.

I had an opportunity to touch a real Amiga for the first time in my life a few weeks back, and yeah, emulation is just not the same, even if it's hard to put into words. That said, I think something like a hypothetical Nintendo Maxi that runs emulator on the inside but accepts real cartridges and other periphery would be best of both worlds.

So. I think we ended up on one of the better timelines all things considered. IF Sonic Adventure managed to be a Saturn game with shorter Cutscenes and grainer dialogue/music (maybe it could of been a multidisciplinary game with fewer characters) then we wouldn't of gotten the Sonic Adventure 2 many of us care so much about. IF Sonic Roboblast was essentially made for Saturn and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 still came-to-be then you'd have a Hard Divide between the Sonic 1/2/3/& Knuckles players, the Roboblast players who'd insist their game was superior due to hybridisation of the 2/3D aspects and Faster (despite optimization issues) and the Sonic Adventure 1+2 (who often have divided opinions anyways despite both games having great Chemistry/sharing DNA with eachother) would take the narrative stance over the 2D and 2.5D titles (and Sonic would lose further appreciation). The slightly better timeline than would not disturb The Balance too much is if the Saturn could actually Load Mega Drive/Genesis games and 32X games (at no extra cost) with a few ports of cancelled Sega CD games (in this timeline) such as a fully realized version of Sonic CD made to run smoothly on the Saturn with higher quality Cutscenes (for each level) with the aid of the Video CD unit.

Considering Sonic being grounded wasn't the best idea they could've made him Super Sonic in the Nights game. Giving him the ability to fly & made new stages dedicated for him but similar to Nights gameplay wise

Saturn actually sits firmly in the middle. It has more power than the PlayStation and less than the Nintendo 64, while having more games than the N64 and less than the PlayStation. Sales are the only aspect in which it falls short.

Now hold on. We dont know the terms of the tech and software created. Back in the 90s, devs had a LOT more control and ownership of the platforms they spents their lifes work creating. They could of been using the nights engine WITHOUT consent, royalties or even credit.

The Plan B for Saturn Sonic was called "Project Sonic" and Jam, Blast Saturn and R seem to be part of all that. Pandemonium's deep dig on the leaked Sega America 1997 annual report indicates a growing awareness/ frustration that Saturn wasn't really getting anywhere. By late 1997 Sega Japan and Sega America were already working on their proposed successor to Saturn and knew the systems days were numbered after that holiday. Sonic Adventure was announced in the fall of 1998 and enough dev was done to have Windy Valley, Speed Highway and Red Mountain levels ready for the media reveal that year. So they must have switched to early "Katana" dev kits sometime in 1997. I could believe early concepts were for Saturn, but quickly moved to Katana when possible. Very early screenshots of Sonic Adventure feature the Sonic R models - specifically the early Sky Chase stage with the original Egg Carrer transforming into a dragon. To answer the question. I think the only way we would have gotten an acceptable 3D Sonic is if Sega had engaged Travellers Tales immediately after Sonic 3D released on Genesis. Or told Sonic Team to make new Sonic Games - but then NiGHTS and Burning Rangers wouldn't exist. Otherwise I think the only realistic option for a "proper" Sonic on Saturn would have been a 2D release. Anything else wouldn't come out on time before Saturn was internally considered "done"

Well, I know X-Treme wasn't the focus of this video, but I just wanted to clarify that the level design shown in the Voxel recreation was Incomplete Level design made for a 1997 also canceled PC version of the game, the Level Design for X-Treme was going to be completely different and made by Hirokazu Yasuhara (Level Designer on Sonic 1/2/3K) himself, there are even concepts and files of it here and there

A Saturn Sonic game could have worked like this: - Pandemonium-like 2.5D levels using 3D polygons for the foreground and 2D VDP2 backgrounds, mantaining the tried and true 2D gameplay but with some cool camera angles and none of the fidgety gameplay or issues of Sonic Adventure's gameplay - hub map like Mario 64 using an environment like Sonic World - special stages like the Saturn version of Sonic 3D

You are living in hypothetical reality. my friend you are a pessimist, most physical games can be played totally offline this is an non issue you made up in your head. If you want to own a game you buy a disc is not that deep it won't go away just like physical movies and physical music has not gone away there will always be that small but important percentage of people that like to own what they pay for.

I played the demo then my Mom bought me the full game, the "last" dungeon (with Alien X) was really confusing, I just remember being forced to take damage for seemingly no reason due to a hazardous floor? I've got it on an emulator now to see if I can actually figure out what I was supposed to do but there's no sound. Thankfully I found solutions online that should rectify that issue. I would also like to add that Monkey Hero was one of those nefarious blue CD disks that liked to have a hissy fit when trying to start them up, unfortunately Gradius V was the same.

It's not a question of whether emulation CAN replace original hardware. Emulation MUST replace original hardware in order to truly preserve video games. The original hardwares are never going to be manufactured again. You have to reverse-engineer them ASAP before they rust away. This is already happening to the first generation of game consoles. Those Pong machines can't output proper video signals anymore. This problem will creep up generations by generations.

Transparency on the Saturn is limited to 2D for the most part. There are some ways to do it in 3D but it is complicated, involving one gpu doing the transparency while the other does most of the rest from what I understand. Showing Burning Rangers chugging along and struggling is not exactly "proof" the Saturn was up to the task of rendering a fast moving Sonic game.
