I'm guessing it peeled because whoever did it got the surface too smooth for the 2K clear to bond to it. That's the thing: 2K clear requires some roughness to adhere, so you are not actually getting a better functioning headlight using 2K clear. I would NEVER use that kind of coating.
@StartRestoringHeadlights2 күн бұрын
Whoever applied it definitely didn't put enough on the bottom, since I was able to sand to the raw headlight pressure quick. All 2K clears deteriorate like this, they start by flaking off. In my years in the business, I've learned that every clear coat deteriorates differently. Some flake, some solidify and turn into severe oxidation, and some deteriorate in fine scratches. Its really is crazy to see the difference.
@josequiroz46052 күн бұрын
some advice! when your spraying your clear coat across try returning back the same way so you don't have to make a far trip to start all over
@StartRestoringHeadlights2 күн бұрын
Good tip! I used to do that, luckily to doesn't add too much time. :)
@gregdossey15213 күн бұрын
If the 2k failed.. it’s probably because it was not sanded and prepped properly.. also you it was a thin layer on the headlights anyway.
@StartRestoringHeadlights2 күн бұрын
2K will fail regardless. The issue is what it does when it fails, and how difficult it is to remove.
@Skipfisher2 күн бұрын
@StartRestoringHeadlights this is not true. If it's not a spray can and a true professional grade like ppg, rm etc. And it's prepped properly it will not fail. I've been painting for a long time and those were either not sanded and cleaned properly and most likely did not use an adhesion promoter which is required on plastics
@StartRestoringHeadlights2 күн бұрын
@@Skipfisher You're essentially saying a clear coat will outlast the sun, which is impossible. Nothing we create can stand against UV rays, it will eventually deteriorate. Its physically impossible. UV radiation from sunlight causes photochemical reactions in the polymer of the clear coat. They literally break down polymer chains through processes oxidation.
@Skipfisher2 күн бұрын
@@StartRestoringHeadlights of course it will deteriorate eventually but the paints on the market now if applied and cared for properly will last longer than the vehicle itself. Honestly what difference does it make if the clear on your headlights is failed if the paint on the rest of your car has failed lol

You'll want to remove all of the old clear coat, otherwise it might be visible when you apply the new clear coat.

Some foglights are glass, and have a slight smoky look to them which can't be restored. But even basic oxidation is smooth, so it might just need to be restored.

My mom has a 2010 Traverse. I just sanded, polished, and clearcoated them. They were full of what appears to be heat cracking, so I had to be very careful. They also had barely any clearcoat left. That little trench in the sides is a nightmare! Thank goodness there’s no light shining through it! Just like GM to leave the top of the headlights exposed to the sun. It doesn’t have fog lights; those are the turn signals and side markers.

Hi Brad, great job! the other day I did a headlight restoration with your method on a 2007 Dodge ram. They were one of the worse headlights i've done. Question for ya, in this video you sprayed from bottom to the top of the headlight, which in every other video you go from top to bottom, is there a reason why you did that on these headlights?
@StartRestoringHeadlights28 күн бұрын
Thank you Keith! For some, it does. When you have shape edges you have to be very careful when it comes to spraying, because it can build up and cause a drip. For this particular one, no, it didn't matter. A good example would be the 2019 Silverado.

Try 2015 which is different. With oxidation on the inside you are only removing half of the problem with an already flawed design. Yes on the outside the will look pretty though.
@StartRestoringHeadlightsАй бұрын
The haze on the inside isn't oxidation. Its can be anything from heat damage from the engine/light bulb, moisture or waster intrusion from a broken seal etc. Even with these issues, restoring them will still really help the light project better.

Great video! Long time follower and customer! I’ve been restoring headlights for a year now using your method and nextgen products. I work at a Chevy dealer, and recently they’ve been letting me work on the used cars on the lot. Most of the vehicles I’ve been working on have been those 2014-2015ish Silverados. Man those are so time consuming. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Definitely has helped me make good side money. 🙏🏼💯

Hi. I just purchased 4 cans of the clear coat you use. Can you double coat with it?

180, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1500, 2000 using kovax sand paper will have those headlights looking new

You do that process and you'll be replacing this customers headlight in no time. This lens on these Porsche's are between 4-5mm thick. Doing that many grits would surely cause weak spots, and would quickly lead to stress cracks, or even worse, a completely broken lens.
@terrencevinson58402 ай бұрын

I wonder if a business like this would thrive in a state like NJ, PA or MD… I currently live in TX and definitely can see it working but I intend on moving to the north east coast in a year. Dont wanna start this and end up with no business
@StartRestoringHeadlights2 ай бұрын
Super easy question to answer. Are there people driving vehicles in that area? If so, yes! It will work. Headlight restoration is in demand for 2 things. 1 it can be very expensive to replace a headlight ($4500 per headlight was a quote one of our Range Rover customers got from the dealer), and 2 people are lazy! Any inconvenience you can make convenient, you can charge a fee for. I've given advice to a loottt of different people inquiring about starting their business, 100% its the persons effort. Next time you drive to your local fast food joint, count how many vehicles you see with hazy headlights. If you want an idea of the income, multiple each by $100. That will give you a small idea of what you can make.
