In nz restaurants are not very helpful to vegans. Chefs in general seem to be quite against the whole idea of it and want to deter us from eating at their restaurants.

I make an oil-free sauce for my veggies with 2tbs nutritional yeast, juice of 2 lemons, 2 tbs hemp seeds, 1-2 tsps Morrocan spice mix, and a handful of macadamia nuts. Whizz in a blender with a little water, depending on how thick or thin you want the sauce to be. I keep it in a clean jam jar, in the fridge and it lasts 1-2 weeks. Although it has nut/seed ingredients, you really only have a tsp or two max a day but it makes salads especially, really tasty.

I recently started skinning the whole melon first, then halving it, removing the seeds and then you can cut it however you want. Works best with Watermelons (as you don't need to remove the seeds), but certainly also works with the yellow ones or any other melon.

You don't need fats or oils in your diet, don't eat nuts or seeds... LA and ALA called and would like to have a chat. Literally essential fatty acids. You need them. Your body can't make them. They aren't in lettuce or potatoes.

Hi Natalie. I am quite new to The Starch Solution - and to your channel. I'm so very sorry to hear about what happened to your Mum and for your loss. I lost my Mum to Alzheimers, and two other family members to Cancer and was the same with emotional eating and too much alcohol also. Sometimes it's just how we get through things. I also had someone very close to me go through something inexplicably terrible in the last 18 months and again, the same thing happened with me. I have gained so much weight and completely feel your pain. I'm now (I think) ready to get back on track and concentrate on my health. I'm sending positive thoughts your way. I love your channel and was stoked to find a fellow UK person with a Starch Solution Channel. I sincerely hope to see you back here.X

I'm not big on veggie choppers, but omg having a mandoline was amazing. If you do get one though, please, please, PLEASE buy a cut-proof glove to go with it. Both of my parents shaved bits of their fingertips off on it when I was little because the guard that comes with it is so bulky and ineffective and doesn't let you actually cut all your food, so you won't end up actually using it and you'll get hurt. The gloves are pretty cheap and comfortable and 1000x more effective than the guard or just trying to be careful

Your tips were almost like hearing myself speak. I already do all of those things. By the way: tip 17 buy a large can of tomato puree then take a sheet of baking paper and fold it to fit across the top of one of your freezer draws. Using a tablespoon dot spoonfuls of tomato puree on to the paper and place the draw back into the freezer. You can then peel the frozen puree from the paper and place them in a freezer bag. This way you will always have puree at hand to add to those legume casseroles.

That is genius! That sounds like a really smart way to freeze things in general, too! It reminds me of how I would cut my super ripe bananas into coins and then quarter them. I'd get a sheet of foil, spread the pieces out flat, and fold the foil into an envelope to lay flat in the freezer. No more banana chunks freezing together!

Sorry about your mum. Wouldn't it be so much easier to stick to WFPB if our takeaways/restaurants sold WFPB vegan food, without oil or a lot of sugar/salt, then it would be soo much easier to eat healthy. But when we would have to essentially cook all our own food to be whole foods, its much harder. I struggle with sugar too, and higher fat plant foods like peanut butter hummus, tahini. My cholesterol is still low though even with the oil I eat and takeaways but I don't eat animal foods regularly.
