Penalty - agree. Surely a lighter VAR touch is not spending endless minutes looking for a reason to disallow - checking for multiple offences, drawing subjective lines looking for millimetres for offside’s? But certainly not fundamentals: like if a player clearly changes the trajectory of a ball through an unambiguous touch unseen by the ref. What’s the point of a VAR review if you are not going to flag ‘clear and obvious’ mistakes?

What's really stupid is that to find out why VAR or the ref hasn't given something i have to sign up to twitter/x. I pay over 800 quid for a season ticket don't we deserve to know wtfs going on. And the signals crap on the holte so won't see it until after the game

The penalty wasn’t that much of a disgrace. Very much in the referee’s call grey area and I’m fine with that. With any decision, I try to flip it and think what I’d say if the teams were reversed. This one took me back to us beating Birmingham City 1-0 with a Milner penalty. That day, Roger Johnson “got the ball” when he tackled Agbonlahor in the area and I thought it was still a penalty because his touch didn’t actually dispossess Gabby and he continued to clip him. In this case, I don’t think Cash “dispossessed” Soucek so I can’t think Gabby’s was a penalty and this one wasn’t. Great show and great win

So many positives from Saturday but a real stand out for me was Maatsen. Kudus was really tearing us apart in the second half, as soon as Maatsen came on there was no more threat from Kudus. Oh! And he got a pre assist.

We didn't concede a penalty for the first 30 odd games last season. Had VAR been allowed to intervene on the Cash incident, I'm confident it would have been overruled. Time will tell on VAR this season. The proposals on changes might seem good on paper. Not sure based on this about the reality.

I think the penalty was awarded as Cash didn't divert the ball enough to close out that moment. The striker "could have" continued with the ball in its new position post Cash's touch, but he dived in the moment after cash touching the ball. I really dislike cheating footballers who dive, honestly, I don't like it when one of our players does it.

Words like “Black sheep” are no longer politically correct especially if it also involves a black player.

As Villa fan 40yrs +!! I saw this as a real tough test and gauge of this season! Honestly, I was expecting a 2-2 draw! A loss, and I'd predict 10 - 7th Prem place with Champs League n multiple Cups load! A draw, Id have hopes of 7-5th Prem place. An amazing controlled win! WOW! I'm beginning to believe we can win a domestic cup, reach the Quarters/ Semi Champs League (with a bit of luck!) AND still make Top 4 Prem again! But seriously, I think we have the prem ending we expecting last year....6th! Hope Villains enjoy this season crazy ride n don't get too upset or panic if we don't finish top 4, or win a domestic cup,for get knocked out Champs League earlier than we hoped! REMEMBER Villains:! Unai only usually win a Trophy / Euro Trophy at Clubs in his 3rd Year! We"ll have a great exciting up n down season.......but my prediction is that it's only next year Unai will bring a Trophy to Villa park! What trophy I don't know....... Carabao Cup? Onana was so commanding in midfield. What a signing. Exactly what we need. Great to see some combinations already starting to click. Pundits have obviously been told to dial back their responses, as you suggested, Pete. Co commentator Smith was definite it wasn’t a penalty when it happened. After half time he brought up a different view immediately. He’d so obviously been wrapped on the knuckles and told what to say, it was just so obvious. Also the tv pundits at half time were saying exactly the same (strange) viewpoint because Sky had dictated it. Sky’s dirty match managing at work again. So maddening!
