I've been on top of Mount Washington! I was on a month long school trip of the east coast the summer between my junior and senior year (1971 from Charlotte, NC). We camped out, rode a bus from place to place and had many adventures. We rode the cog railway up and the weather was crazy! Then we rode it back down. Maybe my "beginnings" of hiking the AT. Glad you got good views (I actually did the day we were there too!)😢

I think this is where my husband and I hiked about 20 miles (over the course of a week) last May while we were in Shenandoah National Park. We definitely did Bearfence Mountain and near Lewis Mountain and South River picnic areas. We have seen lots of deer in SNP over the years, but especially near Big Meadows. They definitely aren't afraid of people!

We have driven the Blue Ridge Parkway multiple times and gotten out to see all the overlook views but have done very little hiking of the AT along the way. We have started doing a little every year in the spring when we go to Virginia. Hopefully we'll get a little more next spring. I love watching your hike along here!

So sorry to see all the damage you got, but definitely glad your house is ok. It reminds me of Hurricane Hugo that came through Charlotte in 1989. The trees down and damage that far inland was crazy. Helene was headed to our house in Northwest Georgia (Thursday night forecast) but went 90 miles east at the last minute and we had nothing, although we had taken in all the yard furniture as normal hurricane proofing, but Augusta, Georgia was hard hit and a lot of SC. Please show us more videos as you clean up. I'm sure it's going to take awhile. It took at least a year in Charlotte to clean up from Hugo.

Most of our biggest trees went. Some may have been 100 or more years old. This property was in the same family since the Civil War, until our house was built in the 1960s. My favorite tree - the biggest and oldest tree did survive. It is a monster.

@@Rabid.Turtles yes they will drop a resupply, but it costs $70. You just have to walk fast so it doesn’t take 10 days. I think I had a light 5 days of food with me. I rationed it and lost a few lbs.

My husband and our daughters hiked up there (very little) in 1987 on a trip up there when we lived in Charlotte. Our kids were 3 and 5! Then my husband and I came back in 2010 and went a little further. But this was before we were serious hikers (we hiked 1/2 the AT in Georgia in 2016 and we've been adding to the AT ever since). I do hope we can come back here and make it up to the top!

Cheers! Hoping this reaches you and you're in great health. Always such a pleasure to enjoy your trail docuseries... some of the best and comes with relevant information. As I watched the hiker box reveal I was thinking of a class 2024 hiker heading there on a $1000 budget. Also gave me pause to consider bringing a canister refill kit to replenish the partials. Anyway at this point you're really anticipating ME, the 100 mile and the big high point. Personal note every month I'm getting closer to my memorial hike. Frameless pack arrived, 2# weight 56L but $88. Felt acceptable compromise.

I am watching Quadzilla do the $1000 thru-hike too. He is awesome. I only had to buy a new canister a couple of times on the AT because of having the gas refill attachment. Plenty of partial cans of fuel in most hiker boxes. Plus at home I can buy the big cans of fuel and fill my little cans with those. Saves a lot.
@Rabid.Turtles

Hi Joann. Did you ladies have your trail name decided for you, or did you pick your own?
@hikingmovie
@hikingmovie 9 ай бұрын
Bailouts name was given to her on a previous hike by Fresh Ground when she left the trail- it was a planned exit. She wasn’t actually bailing out and only planned to hike a couple of days, but she liked it and decided to keep it as her trail name. Greyhound was a nickname I already had, short for ‘crazy greyhound lady’ I hike with my greyhounds and also did greyhound adoption since 2001. I decided to just continue using that on trail unless a better suggestion came up. Some people had a name when they started some didn’t. Some chose their own names. You can choose to accept a name or not. Some people just used their own names and never accepted a trail name. Totally up to you.
