Yes, techs get treated like, “the shit in the back”, or “a necessary evil”.

I remember as a newer tech almost getting hired at Toyota, Looking back Im glad I didnt. The best situation for any tech is to learn in the aftermarket world getting paid hourly. You will learn good work ethic, not how to cut corners and while you may be sweeping floors, youll get paid for it.

I’m a master technician for a manufacturer at a dealership. I hate it with a passion. Money was good at one point but the way technicians are treated sucks. Anyone who wants to be a technician you’re going to be and stay broke for a long time. Go do something else.

Dealerships charge $180/hr shop rates and pay mechanics $25-30/hr. If you want to make real money you need to start your own shop. Offsetting a paycheck 1 pay period is standard. It sucks but happens in most jobs.

Indy all my life and then I bought the shop I worked at. I made my money back in the first 6 months. I now take nobodies shit. Toxic people in every workplace and the only way to change that is to be the boss. I make good money now. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Buy an existing shop and run it yourself.

iv been a journeyman tech for 11 years, Started out working at a performance shop, now I work for my self. This video makes me want to become a service adviser at Toyota because I would Fight for the technician and get those Hours corrected, I would treat them with respect and dignity and I would give up my Free lunch for them and make sure they were included. I bet I could set a record for least amount of come backs just by addressing the problems you talked about and I think you should be a tech before you can become a manager advisor. I think the key to not having high employee turn over is relationship, if you treat people good they will treat you good and if they treat you good the customer is treated good because crap rolls down hill and contrary to popular belief the hill rolls in both directions.

@@Matthewjo22 I cant say I have experienced what you experienced to that degree in an automotive shop. I did however experience a stressful environment in a truck shop on the heavy duty side when I was a first year apprentice, the Journey man thought it was his duty to treat us like crap and make fun if us when we did something wrong rather than teach us how to do it right, I didnt last long there, I quit with in the first 3 months and went to another shop where he environment was alot better, but still had issues with certain people with bad attitudes, left there with in a year and transitioned into automotive, worked half my career in a performance shop and became the head journey man, I always treated the apprentice's with respect, always helping and trying to explain there questions to the best of my ability even bought them lunch from time to time if they didnt have one due to their lower pay and high costs. If you dont have compassion for people how are they suppose to grow and become a better person and a better tech.

I got robbed on my hours every paycheck when I was a dealer flag tech after being a hourly apprentice. Hours would be just missing. Breaks are absolutely not ok but we so brainwashed we didn't even think about it. You would be given RO's and told to do stuff but there would be no hours billed out, just marked up parts or sublet charges, so the tech doesn't get paid but the service writers would get paid off the net and since they didn't pay out to the tech they get more. The tech has no idea what you really are going to get paid at a dealer. What this guy is saying is exactly how it is. If this is not your experience, consider yourself lucky.

I think all the dealers are the same. Some call it service writer not advicer, some dealer hire retire mechanic for this job. You have to keep buy them lunch, constantly give them gifts.....or you will get all warranty jobs which pay 0.3 hour to chech and replace the winshield washer pump. It has been like that for as long as I can remember. This system ruin and rip off good mechanics.

I worked as an ASE certified Master and a GM trained Specialist in Electronics mechanic from 1984 to 1997. I left for a career in IT. The first year I did IT I took a pay cut to get started, but two years later I had doubled my salary and was making far more than I had been making as a mechanic. No more filthy clothes, no more injuries and cuts, no more dirty fingernails and grease stained skin. Wore clean clothes to and from work and bought my dream car, a Corvette. So yes, best move I ever made leaving the auto industry and never looking back.

It's a lot of knowledge to learn and tens of thousands of dollars in tool's you have to buy and they don't even have any respect for you. Sometimes you get a stupid service manager that was a technician 25 years ago and still thinks he's a better technician, what a dope. How about how they rip you on that check, lol suckers you have to be a fool to become a technician.
