Cool and inspiring sounds. We are well in sound design teritory here, and I'm loving it. Lets be honest on an averge Sunday you have about 12-15 min of "playing songs" and another 10-15 min of making pretty sounds in down and ministry moments. Might as well arm ourselves with some tools. This great, thanks.

Love the video! I sometimes use the “blocks” setting with the octaves, hit a triad on the ending chord of a song, hit the “hold” on microcosm, add a washy reverb, and let that ring out a song instead of a trash can. Try it, it’s fun and synth-y

where did you place the microcosm in your chain?
@chris.r.olsson8 күн бұрын
It works best before reverb and delays as it uses the input signal to determine what to record and replay. The microcosm is a micro-looper that always listens to what you play. If you put it before reverbs and delays, you’ll get crisper sounds out of it. If it’s after reverb and delay, it won’t know what to play back and it won’t be as consistent. I’ve had mine for 2 years and I love it
@thetoneshepherd7 күн бұрын
This is actually where I have it in my chain. It's before any other modulation/delay/verb. I was thinking about changing it to after delays...but perhaps I'll leave it right where it's at!
@Genesis_Flux7 күн бұрын
Is just got mine and placed it after möbius before timeline, was wondering if you placed it after delay . Thank you both for explanation!! 🔥

Where in your signal chain do you put the microcosm? Before wet FX?
@chris.r.olsson8 күн бұрын
Before wet works best. I’ve had mine for two years placed just before wet effects and that’s where microcosm likes to sit
@justinmayfield65797 күн бұрын
@@chris.r.olsson what is the order of your wet fx signal chain, if you don’t mind me asking? You put modulation after Microcosm? I have a couple modulation pedals that work well at the front (Chroma but just when using fuzz algos and synesthesia because it is mono in).
@thetoneshepherd7 күн бұрын
It's before any other modulation/delay/verb. Microcosm > Mobius > H90 > Timeline > LVX > BigSky MX

Good video, but i would say its clear that you have dialed things in based on your routing preferences. Also, with a dirtier amp you kinda lose ability to go into the front, in my experience.
@thetoneshepherd9 күн бұрын
@@DarrenLeBlancx I agree with you, and I addressed that towards the end of the video a little bit. If I were running wet effects after, I would definitely need to dial things in a little differently. But I think the video shows the core affect that amp placement has on the fx.
@JGort12 күн бұрын
Love this! Something to note too, is you can get much closer in tone with the effects AFTER if you bump the mix up a little. Gives you that clean verb and delay separation but also gives you the same level. Obviously in this comparison you left all setting the same so of course it seems the effects before the amp are far more dramatic but, as you mentioned, that is solely due to them hitting and breaking up the amp. Add some more mix level to the after the amps option and it starts to get close to the same level of fullness if you will call it that. Geat video!

Does it work this way with Tonex One? I wouldn’t think so since there’s not really a save function on that pedal to save changes on the pedal. I just try to make all my changes when the pedal is plugged in to the software and then not mess with it on the actual hardware unit once I’m playing.

Hey man I have a technical question maybe you've ran into. I have MIDI in/out on the side of my board. My BigSky and Timeline are neither first nor last in my chain. When I plug my MIDI-to-USB into the side board ins/outs, nixie doesn't recognize my pedals. However, when I isolate just my Strymon pedals (using IN on Timeline and OUT on BigSky), Nixie recognizes them both. I think that your setup is similar to mine, with board MIDI in/out, so I'm wondering if you've run into this issue as well?
@thetoneshepherd21 күн бұрын
Yes, this is a common issue with Nixie. My board has a bit of a complicated MIDI routing setup that allows me to use my RJM PBC6X as the MIDI interface and let's Nixie work. But it required me using the RJM Multibox to create a separate MIDI loop for just my Strymon pedals. I made a diagram of how I have it wired here: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/six59mlmjcy8s57qde9d6/PBC-MultiBox-MIDI-Wiring.png?rlkey=e7jhn7mefrv340046fg7p1a09&dl=0

@@thetoneshepherd Very clean solution you've found! I'll have to figure out how to work around this limitation. Tanks for taking the time to respond and share your workaround.
@thetoneshepherd21 күн бұрын
@ It took a lot of research and troubleshooting. In time, with the MX series releasing, this will all be done away with and instead be connected via USB-C which will allow the MIDI chain to connect however we see fit. But until then...it's a pain! I'd look into the Strymon Conduit for now. Perhaps you could connect just your Strymon pedals to that and then connect USB-C to the Conduit.

How would you go about building a board for a small church that doesn't play in the "Mega Church", Bethel, etc. style? (No shade at all btw, I love that sound. But my church plays in a more folky style (lots of hymns, Sandra McCracken and so on) so the big reverbs/delays and lots of drives isn't very appropriate a majority of the time. Additionally, most of the time the band consists of an acoustic, bass, keys and 3 female singers. I think I am struggling to figure out how I can fit in with and add value to the established sound. But most of the content is aimed at that mega church sound. I also can't afford a lot of effects. What would you recommend? Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to do this comparison. It sounds like the smaller pedal has a little less dynamic range and overall slightly less high-end air. It's very subtle. This could be due to the sample rate resolutions. The smaller pedal is running at 44.1 kHz. The bigger one is running at 192 kHz. So the bigger one could offer slightly more fidelity.
@thetoneshepherd24 күн бұрын
Happy to do it! Thanks! But, just to clarify, both the ToneX Pedal and ToneX One have the same hardware conversion specs (24-bit / 192 Hz). I didn't hear any audible differences at all in my tests.
@theblowupdollsmusic21 күн бұрын
@@thetoneshepherd Your null test showcases the differences. When you invert the polarity you are only showing the differences. If you listen with the polarity reversed, you hear a little high end sizzle, and a little bit of attack on the initial and thump on the transient. That's the dynamic response increase, as well as the air. At least In my opinion anyway lol.
@thetoneshepherd21 күн бұрын
@@theblowupdollsmusic As I shared on the video, the only reason the null test showed anything at all is because I couldn't match the Gain and Input Trim exactly the same since, at the time, there was no way to specify exactly what Trim setting was on the ToneX One. However, they've since made software updates to make the latency the same and allow you to specify the Trim. I should do the test again!
@theblowupdollsmusic21 күн бұрын
@@thetoneshepherd Thank you for the specifics. I would be very interested to see you do the test again under different parameters and closer. I like these types of scientific approaches. To my ears, if I were a betting man, I would say the larger pedal sounds more dynamic and has a bit more air. But again that's just me. I have seen another comparison and came to the same conclusion sonically.
