What would be more important than speed to me would be the amount of effort required to climb a given slope. How much assistance is provided at lower to mid cadences. This reflects the real world, when your shagged out at the end of a long ride but you have to crack on to get home.

I still don't know whether to choose Strive ON or Spectral ON. Many people recommend Strive ON, because it's better to have more than less, and the motor does the job on climbs anyway. At first glance Spectral would be more useful to me. And I'm not even afraid of EP801, but there are opinions that the motor is so low that it's easy to hit rocks with it. Is there really such a difference compared to the location of the Bosch motor on Strive?
@alexbiketester
@alexbiketester 7 күн бұрын
the bb height of spectral gives a great feeling of stablity on descents. I like Enduro so I would prefer the Strive. If you like more trail type riding and long rides then the spectral is your bike.

Something has always confused me about torque quotes. Dirt bikes (say 250cc) with 20Nm-ish compared to emtb with 85Nm ? Seems like the bikes should switch chain sizes. The "20Nm-ish" can be found from general google searches. I assume both are measured at the motor shaft, but 4 factor difference?

You come across as a genuine guy with honest impartial content u like some of the other mtb channels that feel like they are paid to promote stuff. Big bike brands that put products out that fail and then cut their customers loose after the warranty is gone need a shake up. Askoll & possibly polini might just doo that. Having the freedom to choose how you mix & match technology eould put the power in our hands as the consumer. Keep up the good work, it must be draining having to ride all these great bikes in such amazing locations all the time.....🤣🤣🤣

People demand more power, so the manufactures meet the market. The extra power chews through the battery so customers demand bigger batteries. The bigger batteries weigh so much the bikes need more power to ride well. So the manufacturer will end up making a more powerful motor, and so it goes on.

I feel its getting ridiculous now calling these 250W motors that only allows for a 7A controller at 36V but I know an earlier Bosch motor had a 23A controller so with a fresh 36V battery delivering 42V that is over 900W when hill climbing. It feels to me manufacturers keep pushing the envelope of what you can call a 250W ebike almost expecting to be stopped but they never are so they keep increasing the power. It's a strange marketplace where a mid-drive ebike can deliver 900W of power yet people complain that another type of ebike with 400W output is illegal despite the same 15.5mph assistance limit. I can honestly see 1200W mid-drive ebikes being sold in a few years and still having a 250W rating label. Certification should be fair and honest which sadly EU legislation isn't. It is just a mess probably designed to give European manufacturers a commercial advantage. I think the 30 second boost mode makes sense as mid-drive motors have thermal issues and struggle to cool themselves as have to remain water proof where they are so I feel that is probably the max overheat they are allowed. It's probably wise to avoid using it for the long term reliability of the motor.

The uphill constant speed is the most noticeable advantage i have seen so far of these motors. The Askoll on that super steep grippy climb did an amazing job, a lot though depends on the bikes. ITs rare to be able to get the bikes that have these motors and compare to the bigger brands to see what the differences are. I have never complained about the main brand motors, no wI have more experience with these im trying to understand what is being measured and how to get a clearer picture.

This is the thing. We need some testing on the Dyno. I don't have a dyno, so I am going based on ride feel. I assume that all motors must meet the specs they quote, but, the question is for how long? At what cadence? What is the actual constant support level? From riding so many motors I can feel that something is not the same despite the numbers being quoted by brands being compared to each other. Maybe they are using different scales? Different measurement methods? I don't know.

Great idea if that is interchangeable with the Shimano. It's long past time a common format was set and I have never been a fan of proprietary stuff - like Apple. Controller wise, Bosch is pretty rubbish. While I am a fan of the top-tube controller I am OK with a display if it is not too big and does what is required. Remotes - nothing beats the Spesh unit on the Levo.

Rode a Merida with the EP801 opened to 45kph and a 750Wh battery recently. Riding a loop I use regularly the only real benefit found was on a couple fire roads where I used to ride my analogue bike at around 35 to 38kph and could do so on the Merida, where both my Bosch bikes start tailing off around 28-30 and are not worth trying to push through the 32kph limit. The other place where I noticed a difference was on a couple trails that were relatively flat, but with rolling undulations. Was much easier to stay on the pedals through sections where peddling was required. Unfortunately the settings on thr EP801 were all over the place and far from the default settings so difficult to get a real feel - couple with the owner not having any thumb switch to change modes and just set it from the display to eMTB mode and leaves it in that or Turbo. For a while I ran one of my Bosch CX with the default firmware & 75NM and the other at 85NM. The rides were much more enjoyable with the 85NM and strangely enough, the range with the 625Wh battery was not a lot different. Peak power really doesn't mean too much to me, but that torque is where I find the most benefit.

I really wanted to buy bike with Polini motor. Unfortunately I faced multiple problems with their approach to market. 1. You can buy only Italian brands which make bikes with this motor. 2. Above is even more frustrating when you ask for bike price. Since this is mostly in house local Italian bike manufactures they do it locally and manually (carbon frames with their own molds) which is very costly. 3. 10k euro for a Ecrown is huge, Polini motor + frame + battery + other Plini equipment costs 5k euro (Ecrown) 4. For 10k euro I can have Pinion MGU E.12 and enduro bike which is more appealing for me but I would never spend 10K euro for an E-bike ;-) 5. So instead of going after fully servicable motor (thank god Polini you are doing it!!) I was foced to buy 4k euro fully equiped Mondraker E-Bike with Shimano EP801 and 1080Wh battery with better suspension system than Ecrown. Remaining 6k euro I can spend on another bike or buy 4 more EP801 motors... 6. If only Polini starts selling their complete system to individuals I'll buy it and fit into my current E-bike once EP801 die...
