I see people asking will the dsl5c keep up with a drummer? Why would you want it to is my question? I bought it so I can actually get output distortion and the speaker moving at low volume. I'm done with the plexi, hiwatt 100 it's too much. I wish I found this amp 20 year's ago. I love it and I've had Matchless to vintage plexis and also build amps. This little 5 watt is killer with plenty of bottom end and a rery useful Tone stack

I ordered the same parts (different LEDs I already had though...) and wired it the same way you did. The LEDs lit up properly with the multimeter like yours did. When I hooked it up, it would turn on the lead channel led but wouldn't turn off the clean channel LED. Any idea what could be going on?

Like tone, the volume of a drummer is subjective. I’ve played with some drummers who are tasty as heck and light on the skins butI’ve also played with some bashers. This head through a 4x12 should satisfy… through a 1x12 maybe not. Big cab vs small cab makes more difference than wattage imo.

If we're going to call a spade a spade then cool, but know this up front, amps like the Katana and some of the other Blackstar types are more like modellers instead actually mounted in a cheaper cab with a speaker or two of various sizes depending on the particular model etc, make no mistake that modellers are only ever at their best when sent to a full range 2 way cab...the Katana is one of the better units I think but they too are limited by the cab they are mounted in no less, the head is also being hindered and wasted sending it into a conventional cab....they need an frfr at minimum or a full range p.a.type cab with at minimum a 12'' driver/speaker....a 15'' is preferable instead over all else.....your welcome!

Monoprice amp is excellent- Just add an graphic eq pedal in front or in the effects send and you've got most any tone you like- no need to swap out the speaker. I did swap the 3 12AX7's for 3 lower gain 5750s, much happier with a tamed overdrive. kzbin.info

Great tips, however I don't understand why people are ok with not being able to pull up on the bar with a floyd rose (for the sake of using a D tuna). Even a subtle up/down vibrato with the whammy bar requires some up movement, let alone Jeff Beck or Steve Vai style bar work. Hence why the D-TUna isn't for me. I might try some of the shimming stuff you talked about, thanks!
@oldguyjammin9732
@oldguyjammin9732 4 күн бұрын
I totally hear you and agree that a truly nice vibrato can’t be done without pulling up a bit. The mechanics of the D-tuna just don’t allow it. Then again I don’t think Beck of Vai delve into much D-tuned stuff. If nothing else, t’s a good reason to have two guitars.

I think you could have added a power brake to the DSL 40 and problem solved, because I know for sure when you crank up a 20-watt amp to where it starts sounding good it is still WAY too damn loud for bedroom use. I use a Blackheart 3 watt little giant into a 2 x 12 in the bedroom, and I still can't turn it up past 3 unless no one is home. The difference in volume between a 40 watt and a twenty-watt amp when they both have a pair of el34 power tubes is not much, but the 40-watt DSL has a half power switch so if you wanted to play at 20 watts turn the switch to 20. If you want a good sounding tube amp for home use even 5 watts is too loud.......so you have to get an attenuator.
@oldguyjammin9732
@oldguyjammin9732 4 күн бұрын
I’d agree with most of what you said, the 40 just wasn’t for me; didn’t need the dual masters, etc. The 20 was plenty and I found the sweet spot a little easier. You’re right about twice the watts NOT being twice as loud, that’s a commonly held false hood among the newbies, but then again not all 20 watt amps are created equal, some 20s are much louder than others, etc. I’ve always felt that amps on half power mode lose a little of the thump, take the Brent Hinds signature by Orange, between the full/half power and headroom/bedroom switches you have some VERY different tones. My favorite home amp to this day has to be the DSL5 - from quiet to loud it just sounds great! My only experience with attenuators is the passive ones and while I dig what they do, I still feel they suck just the slightest bit of tone out of the fun. I certainly can’t afford the $1k Fryette or something similar, nor do I really need one. Someone with an old non-master Marshall??? For sure \m/

@oldguyjammin9732
@oldguyjammin9732 15 күн бұрын
They’re both great but there is a ‘roundness’ and sag in the Friedman that is really well suited to Strats and Teles rather than guitars with humbuckers, where as the Soldano has a faster response and is more mid-forward in tone that seems to favor humbuckers. I’d say as the gain gets higher the Astro pulls ahead where as if the gain is lower the Friedman wins. Hope that helps.

@@Deathwing-kw5fs - you’d have to interrupt the circuit somewhere, probably easiest where the reverb control knob is soldered to the board, or between it and the first component it “sees”. And then, like you said, wire that to a normally closed 1/4 input jack and mount the jack to the chassi, then make a simple on/off footswitch. It be easier to buy an even ‘middle of the road’ reverb pedal on the cheap and put it on your board… run it through the effects loop. It’ll also be a much better delay than is in that DSL. Some used Hall of Fame, or Boss RV6 or something.

This footage is pure gold. Schematics of the Dirty Shirley have been floating around for a while now but I couldn’t find anything on the bright/tight switch. My best guess is that C4 is placed in series with C3 reducing the amount of bass hitting the second gain stage. I can’t see the value but I’m betting it’s 2.2nF with C3 being 22nF. That’s the tight half of the switch. The other half of the switch, the bright half looks like it might bypass the 820 ohm cathode resistor (R16) with C8 which I imagine is 680nF. You’d likely hear a little pop if this is the case. This cathode resistor is not bypassed on the Dirty Shirley. It also looks like the shunt resistor for the middle gain setting on the structure switch is now 10k (R10); it used to be 4.7k.

I’m looking forward to hearing about your mod! I like to tinker. I have a spare Jet City 20W head to try the Little Sister circuit on. Depending on how it goes I might buy the real thing. I’ve done some BE-based preamps and own a Runt 50, and have come to the conclusion that all that front end compression isn’t my thing. The Little Sister is likely a better fit. The JEL20 is also on my radar and might work the best because it’s a bit more aggressive and has the Small Box clean channel. If you’re able to share the value of C8 it would be much appreciated. I’m assuming it’s bypassing R16 because it’s the same size and shape as the C2 and C6 which are 680nF, otherwise I would expect it to bypass R14 as part of the bright function in which case I would expect it to be in the 470pF ballpark.

would that be a Harley Benton 40 with reverb? I would think so but you’ll probably need to have an LED indicator on the footswitch. To find out plug a stereo cable into the foot switch jack and the use a paper clip to connect the shaft to either ring and see if the channel changes or boost comes on (is it two function foot switch or just channel switching) If it’s only channel switching just use a regular instrument cable. If the paper clip doesn’t work use an LED across the shaft and tip, if the LED does not light up, reverse the leads and try again.
