Let’s get down to facts. I own (In America / Lectric Bikes) an eBike with a 500 Watt nominal mid-drive motor. (20 Amp actual maximum controller X 48 Volt batteries-2 = 960 Watts output) Actually, when charged, the battery is approximately 54.6 volts X the same 20 Amp controller = 1092 Watts) as the bikes is set up, My maximum speed is 31 mph (49.9 kph) on level ground with no wind effects. That’s what I can do with the maximum 1092 watts, and that’s more than four times the 250 watt limit you are under, peddling at maximum “furiously.” In no way am I exceeding the speed limit of a local 35 mph (56.3 kph) road. In fact (actual), I’m causing a small impediment to local traffic, which causes me to keep to the side of the road, where I encounter people exiting their cars, joggers, people walking (no sidewalks), glass, metal busses, double and single parked cars, etc., etc., etc. . It would be far safer to travel at the prevailing speed limit (where accidental contact with other vehicles would ideally result in zero speed differential, and minimal (or no actual harm). To do so, I would need at least 3000 watts peak (1500 nominal) to travel at normal city speeds without elevated levels of potential harm… and so would you. For comparison: 1. Your limit being 250 watts nominal 500 peak, approximately. 2. My limit of 750 watts nominal (not mine specifically, but the US in general) or 1500 watts peak. 3. A Honda mini-motorcycle at 109cc has 5200 watts nominal, 10400 watts peak. (CRF110F) 4. A small Honda full sized motorcycle at 149cc has 9320 watts nominal 18640 watts peak. (XR150L) In both of the last cases, the bikes in question run on petrol, so they would not have actually have the peak ratings available to them. (mentioned to keep them equal by comparison to their electric counterparts ) Though both would have the nominal 5200 and 9320 watt ratings available. Both of these bikes are not considered “good on anything other than local urban roads, around town (CRF110F), or as a local urban commuter, not good for freeways (XR150L).” In these terms (personally verifiable) the local limit of 750 watts nominal, much less 250 watts nominal are, to be blunt, laughable, if they weren’t so dangerously UNDER-powered for even local urban streets. Forget about local suburban highways (not even freeways) as they are at an increased risk of bodily harm, or even death due to the inability to keep up, and not be able to reduce the differential of prevailing traffic.

F@#K this noise, ebikes come past me in my car on the back wheel over 30mph in every estate I go to. All the law and cost of being on the road in a car should be same on all ebikes. That's without adding red lights they run and cost law abiding citizens extra on their premium with insurance for the next 5 years, even if they hit you at night, running a red light with no lights or reflective clothing and a face mask. Ask your insurance company, I found out first hand and it's doubled my insurance even with the law on my side insurance don't care, because you have to make a claim on your own insurance it's goes down as a fault. Even with police assistance, my dash cam footage front and back, as well as cctv from the junction it happend. Also I had all the extra protection you can have for uninsured drivers but because they slip through the cracks of these extras you can't even claim any medical or loss of earning, but what's sickening is they can claim on your insurace for injuries. This was with Hastings direct 19th Aug 2023. According to them it's the same with all insurers when it comes to accidents that involve ebikes and scooters, even when it's not your fault. If they were under the same legislation as a moped 49cc and restricted to a speed limit by law then this wouldn't happen to people who pay through the nose to have the privilege not the RIGHT to use the roads.

The point your avoiding is an e bike is an assisted push bike, anything where you don’t need to pedal is a motor bike, ride a push bike or ride a motor bike, The issue we have is many people will buy or modify an e bike to go faster or work without pedal assist then use footpaths, and off road tracks where they shouldn’t be, I am regularly cut up by just eat riders do 30mph, as a mountain biker I can sustain 25-30mph but I slow when passing pedestrians

A bicycle that is no longer pedal assist is a moped. Yes, UK law is pretty stupid, particularly on scooters. Helmets at bicycle speeds should not be mandatory - whilst there may be anecdotes on their usefulness, the overal data shows no benefit - they simply discourage cycling. We need to look to NL for best practice on this subject.

I have a 1700w e-bike and ride it sensibly, the problem which affects every town and city is those brainless morons who work for delivery companies, no lights, ride on pavements, looking at phones, and ridiculous power outputs, every delivery rider needs a registration number easily seen by the public so that they can be reported. Oh and they could wash now and then…

Ok so just to clarify the trespass bit. Correct it isn't a criminal matter, it is a civil matter. But there are civil courts that you could find yourself in. On those occasions where you choose to ride on land that you don't have the owners permission on, ut is the same as someone coming to your house and riding round your garden when you aren't there. You are just relying on not being seen. If the landowner does see you, I suspect they won't be happy, and they will ask you to leave. If they ask this and you leave and do not return, then you break no law of trespass. If you refuse to leave or leave and come back, you do break trespass law and can be pursued through the civil courts. Aggrevated trespass can also become a criminal matter if damage is caused. You also have to be careful on those internal tracks on the fields. Many of them will also be footpaths and bridleways, both of which it is illegal to ride that type of bike on. Best stick to a private piece of land you do have permission for.

Silly boy ..... The ebike rules are about 'assisted' pedal cycles. If you want a motorbike, you can have one. It can be electric if you like, but it is a motorbike and you will be tied up in the rules of motor vehicles. Why? Because it is a motorcycle. Get a license. Get insurance.Get it registered. Get an MOT every year if it is three years old or more. Pay your road tax and wear a crash helmet. The clue is that an assisted pedal cycle which has next to no regulation, is that it is a bicycle and not a motor vehicle. What you want is a motor bike which has no rules and regulations other than it has to have two brakes and some lights in the dark.

Huh, have they changed what a CBT allows? Used to be you took the CBT every 2 years and that allowed you to ride a 125cc motorcycle. Such as the Yamaha 125 (nimble, quick in corners, but not very comfy) or the Kawasaki Eliminator 125 (nice ride, very comfy - like sitting in an armchair, problem'; it cornered like an armchair). Spent quite a few years riding those bikes way back when. EDIT: Ahh, 16 year olds are limited to mopeds, 17+ and a CBT = 125cc motorbikes.

Gotta love those e bikes with 10kW motors or so, speeding in the streets without license plates and let's face it, mostly used in the south by certain demographics to evade the police... As if this thing can't kill you the same a motorbike would if it crashes on you... The main difference is anyone can get it but don't need any drivers license or license plates.

where I live in Sunderland, there is too much e-bike abuse and the police are powerless. every day I see youths on e-bikes wearing balaclava going through red lights, over taking, undertaking everything in front of them at well above the 30mph. They're also pulling wheelies down roads full of kids playing football in the streets recently I spoke to the Police and they say they are not allowed to chase them unlike the metropolitan police in London. I think all bikes capable of above 15mph should be road registered with number plate & insurance, just like mopeds, so once they are traceable to the owners address, people may become more responsible riders. I have a full bike licence and love the thought of owning one of these, but morons are not even adhering to the highway code

As long as the distinction between a bicycle and a motorbike remain. E bikes should function like a standard bike but with electric assist. The laws need a massive overhaul to ensure we keep bicycle and pedestrian spaces safe and get more people to use personal electric vehicles over cars for single person journeys.

The law around 'peddling furiously' has been around for BICYCLES for decades, it's not new for ebikes. Pedal assist at 250 Watts, is exactly what it says on the tin. It is there to assist. It an ebike, not a moped. Back in the 1970s mopeds had to be 50cc, no restrictions on HP, and be able to be pedalled.

Sur Ron is a small, quiet , slim, motorbike for thieves to nip down alley ways as a getaway vehicle. That's why the police don't like them and TBF, they're right, besides, they're shit. A Proper bike like a KTM/Honda/Yamaha is so much better off road. Pedal assist bikes provide great exercise, particularly for injured/old or injured old people, like me. And for three road and particularly track days, I like my Yamaha R1.
@barrymiller3385

Hmmm... I'm not sure I really agree with you. I think the law covering ebikes is fine as it is with one exception. I would like motor assistance up to 20mph rather than 15.5mph. This would allow ebikes to more easily travel at the speed of an ordinary bike. It would also be much safer - particularly in town centre or slow moving traffic. The point here is it should be a motor assisted bicycle NOT an electric motorcycle. You can, of course, have an electric motorcycle with the law as it already stands. You just have to insure it and wear a helmet. It can be pretty much whatever power you want - if you have the appropriate licence. There MAY be an argument for a class of ebike between these two things - perhaps along the lines you set out. I have been riding an ebike for a couple of years now and I certainly haven't felt the need for more power. It is, after all, a replacement for a bicycle. I happen to wear a helmet (most of the time) and have insurance because I choose to do so. I do NOT wish to be compelled to do so.

I find what pisses most motorists off in a built up area is being held up by bikes going at 15mph. in the country they are held up by having to adhere to the 1 mtr clearance gap when you are only allowed to travel at 15 mph, it just creates tail backs, they need to let them go at least 20 mph to stop all this nonsense most e-bike riders are not idiots on the road.
