TLDR * Measure while standing up * Look straight down over longest toe to find the foot length * Line up right hand piece with the big toe joint to find arch length * Bring left piece as close as possible to foot without squishing your foot * Use your arch length as a reference on the left piece to get your foot width

I have been training for a half marathon for two and a half months. Zero issues (I am at 10k-ish), get up this morning, the ball of my foot hurts quite a bit when applying standing or walking pressure. Felt it the entire day. No optical swelling or discouloring, no injury. Had an easy long run the day before with zero pain. I did however do two cross training bike race sessions with shoes that made my right foot tingle and go numb two days before and a week prior. Could that be expressing itself now? I can't really find specific pressure points with my thumb really pressing, does that mean it is not a pinched nerve?

When you jump a full size the footwear will also get wider, so that explains why the shoe doesn't fit as securely. Choose a different brand.

@FootGeekzTV

About 1 cm should be sufficient depending on the shape of the shoe. If the shape of the shoe doesn't match your foot, i.e. pointy toe vs square foot, you may need more length to provide room for the toes to wiggle.

heloo from aus, im currently dealing with outer heel pain that ive been trying to fix for 5 years, many podiatrists, dr's, physio's, a spine specialist, soft tissue expert have been seen and nobody has any idea. both heels, on the edge burn after prolonged standing, its getting worse so i cant stand for much longer then half hour to an hour usually, no protaned or supernated feet, running or walking generally doesnt hurt, only standing still, no nerve issues, my pelvis is anteriorally tilted and used to suffer back issues but thats all sorted now as my hip flexors were tight but foot pain is getting worse. standing in a hot shower is something that seems to allow me to stand longer, ive watched endless videos on heel pain and nothing matches up, its not a plantar issue and theres no pain anywhere else, just the corners of my heels and can somewhat radiate toward the arch, but mostly the heel. please please help if you can, ive got no idea what to do from here.

If it's a neuroma you will have to relieve pressure on the nerve. Either with wider footwear or stretching of existing footwear. A metatarsal pad can also help relieve pressure on the nerve if there's a collapse of the metatarsal arch. Neuroma pain usually dissipates as soon as you remove the source of the pressure (i.e. going bare foot). If that's not the case it may be something else.

For Morton's Toe... Which is better a high heel drop or a low heel drop? How high or low can you go? Keith
@FootGeekzTV
@FootGeekzTV 2 ай бұрын
Great question Keith. It really depends on a number of factors. If there is no callusing or pain there may be no need to switch shoes. However, if there's pain and a tight calf muscle then a lower heeled shoe may cause you to add more weight to the forefoot, as you won't have as much heel contact. If there is pain or callusing you'll want to relieve pressure with a soft Morton's extension or a metatarsal pad, as well as a potential arch support. If the calf muscle isn't tight the heel height would be a personal preference. However, the higher the heel to toe differential the more pressure transfer there would be to the ball of the foot, if there are no other considerations.
@GizmoTucker

@@FootGeekzTV Thank you for the reply. The sentence ("However, if there's pain and a tight calf muscle then a lower heeled shoe may cause you to add more weight to the forefoot, as you won't have as much heel contact.") Did throw me for a bit, the first and second read still made no sense but I think I have it now. A tight calf muscle will keeping weight off the heel which causes more weight to be transferred to the ball of the foot??. I have no issues wearing flip flops but have issues with my other shoes/sneakers (not brand new shoes or sneakers) Feels like bunched up socks under my toes and toes kinda go numb but not painful to walk. To put things into perspective I am a 68 year old male, have never had a foot issue until now. I appreciate the input.
@FootGeekzTV
@FootGeekzTV 2 ай бұрын
@@GizmoTucker if you don't experience pain with flip flops, but only in shoes, you may want to consider checking the width of the shoe, as numbness and a bunched up sock type feeling may be more an indication of morton's neuroma, a compressed nerve. Perhaps the shoes are a bit too narrow.
@FootGeekzTV
@FootGeekzTV 2 ай бұрын
As for the tight calf muscle issue, you're correct. If the calf muscle is tight it may cause the individual not to spend as much time on the heel on heel strike and transfer the body weight forward onto the ball of the foot sooner, because the tight calf muscle causes the weight transfer to the ball of the foot to happen more quickly.
