G'day, I'm restoring a CS 3/1. I have a couple manuals from different periods but they don't seem to have specific details on the clearance tolerance between the piston face at top dead centre and the top of the cylinder block. I suppose i should be aiming for within a few thousandths of an inch, but no more than 8,000ths? Also, do you have any details on the shim that is supposed to be part of the bottom end? Last but not least, absolutely lovely restoration. It was a joy to watch all of the posts. I learned a lot, which gave me the push I needed to het it done. The compression tap is stuck and so is a busted gib key/stuck flywheel hub, but I'm determined to solve both boyh and have my CS up & runnung soon!

I didn't see what you did to clean up the fuel filter. I cleaned up my original one by soaking and agitating it in acetone a couple of times. When it was reasonably clean I blasted air through it with my air gun while it was still in an acetine bath. That bubbled out the remaining crud so well it was pretty much as good as new. I let it dry out before winding it back up in the cage prior to closing up the unit again.

Hello, ive bought one of these and after just 10 charges of my fx impact mk3 the pump won't compress at all.. typical ch**ese crap, but air is escaping from the first stage safety valve.. that red capped valve on the left ..i ordered a spare from the internet but as there is no information on the rating (pressure) of the yong heng one I have no idea if the one I ordered is the correct pressure, and it blows off even more !!! i think it was rated at 175 psi ..so the question is why does the safety valve blow, Im pi**ed off that after just 50 minutes of run time over 10 days its allready junk..and planning to get a ful refund..the importer doesnt have any spares !!! nice so they are just as bad...however looking at the videos I have seen it looks like the only solution to filling your own gun directly is to buy a chinese one and nurse it continously repairing it every 50 minutes !! Has anyone had this 1st stage failure ? and what was the cause ? as no one else makes a decent afordable compressor under 2500 euros (yes im in france) li looks like ill be taking it apart constantly to repair it .. colin

I was scrolling through your videos to see where you might have done a tutorial on the installation of the hour gauge on the yong heng compressor but did not see it. Can you advise me of which video and part and location acquired the hr meter. Thank you for this video I just so happen to see it pop up and immediately checked it out.

Mr. Cotton, you were a pioneer in the full rebuild videos of 5 years past! If my 2019 YH goes I would gladly do the piston service. The cost of shipping just the motor would have me justify buying a whole new unit. I take great care on keeping my motor aux fan cooled as the heat is high with just the as built fan. Cheers!

Eine schöne Restaurierung. Super gemacht. Aber was genau hat es mit diesem Handrad am Zylinderkopf eigentlich auf sich? Das verstehe ich nicht. Ich meine, er hätte es erklärt, aber leider bin ich des Englischen nicht mächtig.

Hello, thank you for your comment! The hand wheel on the cylinder head is for changing the compression ratio, in cold frosty weather it is wound in to raise compression for easier starting, and when driving heavy loads it is wound out to to lower compression 🙂 All the best!

Does your engine smoke at low compression setting ? Mine burns clean on high compression but i still get some blue smoke when i run out the screw valve. I think it may be because I put to much oil in the valve spring wells to lubricate the stems. Loads of compression. Cant turn the engine over without using decompression lever.
@sambocotton5868
@sambocotton5868 10 ай бұрын
I just fired it up from cold on low compression and it started easily and it doesn’t smoke at all (20 degrees outside temp but cooler inside), I gave it a 2000 watt load from a heater still on low compression and there’s barely any detectable smoke! Each time I fire it up it’s getting better and better,I guess the rings and bore are bedding in. The very first time I fired it up I gave it 3000 watts boiling a kettle which it does easily but there was a bit of blue smoke but nothing like what it was, I think I’ll put them videos up and then try the 3k load again to see if it’s cleared up! I must have had the engine running about 2 hours now on and off,the first fire up I let it run for an hour straight to get it warm and let the oil circulate. Was there much play in the valves and guides or did you replace them? Probably just needs to bed in 👍
@joschmoyo4532
@joschmoyo4532 10 ай бұрын
@@sambocotton5868 The reason I ask is because some guys say you must not run a lister unloaded. It glazes the bore. I suspect its just like you say. Needs bedding in. Compression is excellent. New valves and guides but they are Indian so tolerances may not be as good in the guides. Could be the fuel cetane is not as high down under. 30 weight monograde castrol oil.

That’s definitely the best way to build an engine, I had to get it done as quick as possible as I haven’t got a great deal of room! I like the look of the tank cooled engines better although I suppose the rad cooled are more practical, there’s no pump it’s still thermo siphon but is very efficient at cooling, l recon it would be great at heating quite a large workshop as it moves plenty of warm air around 😉 I told my brother to keep his eyes peeled for a start o matic set and grab it with both hands, he moved to Oz 30 odd yrs ago

You done a great job and saved another one from the scrap heap! I’m sure it will reward you with decades of trouble free service 👍 would love to see a vid of it running and generating power. A 6 hp motor will give you just under 4 1/2 Kw of power from your 8kva alternator 6 x 0.746 = 4.476 kw which is a useful amount of power to have even more so if your using wmo 😉 Thanks for your comment

Hello Josh, thanks for your kind words, I’m glad you enjoyed it Kate worked hard to film and especially edit all of this l certainly couldn’t/wouldn’t have done it 😳 sounds like your engine had a lot harder life than mine, l was lucky l believe it was in the collection of an old boy who had recently passed and must have spent decades sleeping, a good friend of mine got it because he wanted the radiator and fan and I was going to have the engine and run it tank cooled but like he said it would be a shame to break it up as it’s so original so offered it to me complete. I’m going to use it to generate power for when the power cuts come! Cheers Melv

My engine came off a Sheepstation in Queensland. It still had the belt pulley used to drive the line shaft in the shearing shed. Only worked hard for a few weeks every year and kept under cover. The lanolin from the sheep's wool protected it from rust. It was in very good original condition but needed a complete overhaul. I repainted some of the parts but tried to keep the original paint where it was still sound. It's a dark Brunswick/ British racing green. Nice. I too am using it to drive a generator. It doesn't have the radiator like yours. Thermosyphon. Anyway, Kate did a great job of filming, editing and sound. Congrats to her. Enjoy your engine. You've got a great engineering classic there in excellent condition. Very lucky. I snapped mine up when I found it. Many were left to rust outside once they became redundant. Took me three years to find it though after a lot of scouring. I needed the 6hp rather than 3.5. I don't think the radiator types were very common downunder. You really hit the jackpot with that one. Good to keep it in original condition too. I intend to go off grid with mine. It will be put to good use. Cheers.

Indian parts quality is definitely variable. I had to get the valve lifters refaced, they were no longer flat. I replaced the intake cam but the exhaust and injection pump cam's were still good. The idler gear, crankshaft and cam gears were in excellent mint condition. No problems with the governor either. But in for a penny, I stripped her right down and checked everything. Main bearings and big end were in excellent condition. So all in all my rebuild was not to hard on the wallet. Tried to keep it as close to original as possible. Mine had been subjected to a half hearted rebuild a few years back but obviously the guy gave up after a minimal effort. Engine runs smoke free on high compression now. Starts easy in zero temps. Nearly ready to run the 8kw generator off of it. Curious to see how much power it can deliver.

Finally, someone shows a full tear down and rebuild of a CS. I recently rebuilt my 6/1. It was made in 1964. My chrome bore was heavily stepped at the top from a broken ring so i had to resleeve it. Runs like new now. Loads of compression. Impossible to crank over without the de compression lever or cracking open the compression screw. My block was totally gunked up and so was the exhaust port. New rings, piston, small end bearing, valves and sleeves. Head was skimmed and valve seats reseated with hardened inserts. So pretty much a complete rebuild. Great fun. Well worth the effort. Anyway, enjoyed watching this. Thanks.

For any new viewer stopping by - the carbon occurs since the oil is combusting inside the second state. The suggested hyrdraulic oil is incorrrect, instead what you should be using is an oil called "secolube" (diester based). This oil is used in high pressure breathing air compressors and insures there wont be any combustion in the second stage which then gets stink, and carbon inside your air tank and gun @air velocity sport and @target forge have several videos explaining what the best setup for these is

..and my Seco Lube 500 turns black after a couple of hours just like my favorite internet oil, Royal Purple. Air Velocity never came back with his results with the Seco Lube unless I missed it from two years ago. I will say my YH runs cooler with the Seco Lube. I have written Lawrence Factor, lol, not holding my breath. So, myself and a few others on Airgun forum have the same issue, with 1(one) saying his does not turn black.

Hi Sambo, excellent strip down guides. I have a Yong Heng copy that’s worked perfectly for along time, but has now started to leak out of the oil breather (the black filter that sits on the oil sump) the pressure starts to drop on the compressor once it’s stopped and then starts to blast air out of the oil breather. do you have any ideas? Take care. Andy
