LOVED THIS MEETING!! Full of knowledge and rich experiences dealing with this condition... My Name is Esteban, and I´m a student of a Music Education program, who is on a daily journey to recover from focal dystonia. I would like to ask the admins for a favor: I´m carrying out a reaserch about this condition, and it would be a great help if you give me a hand by sharing (in a fixed coment, or in your comunity) a Google Form (completely anonymous) whit a survey about the experience of going throug focal dystonia. Thanks for everything!!!

Hi Boo, I'm so pleased for you. We swapped posts on the musicians with focal dystonia group on Facebook some years ago. We seem to have followed paralled paths in the quest for recovery. I've been working with Ruth's book and had a masterclass with her recently which was amazing. I'm down to my last symptom on guitar and have cause to be optimistic. But you're right, it's about fixing the person. If I should play again I'll still consider myself to be a work in progress. All the best.

When I saw him play recently, I saw his hand cramp up (onstage playing with his brothers) he sort of laughed it off and kept tapping along with his left hand I think. He's on the right track, these physical breakdown more often then not have their source from deep emotional/psycho stuff. Stress can ratchet it up. If anyone is suffering from Any chronic pain/ I highly recommend reading Dr. snares books on chronic pain and suppressed emotion and how it cause all this kinds of stuff. You have to have an open mind, normal western medicine only confronts the mechanical , as if our emotions and suppressed (anger especially) doesnt affect our physical body. Best of luck to all

Wait, does that mean that he invented thumping because of dystonia? So he basically started a small musical revolution because of his condition. That's ironic...

Hi, im interested in buying some sessions for you, which one should i get? Is Masterclass General participation the right one? It says I need to work through the book The Focal Dystonia Cure. Does that mean I need to work through the book first before I start the sessions?

@theguitarzone767. Hello, the Masterclass General Participant is a great place for you to begin as you have time between now and the class to work through the first 3 exercises in the book. I hope that helps.

Victor Wooten is a down to earth, kind Gentleman, with a big heart. My group of friends and me had the chance to meet him a couple of days ago (Saturday January 20th), in Berkeley California, where he performed with his brothers. T’was a jaw dropping show. After blowing our minds with an amazing performance, the staff of the venue wanted us lingering fans to exit the building so they could close it. The venue’s staff were a bit overly firm with us. Victor took note of this, politely said something to the staff, walked right pass them, and came outside to greet us all and talk to us, INDIVIDUALLY, while it was cold and raining on us late at night. What a great human being!!!

I have been doing this attunement exercise every day. I just finished chapter 5 of your book and now I know why I have focal dystonia for 4 years now. I played a certain way on the piano for my whole life. Naturally, I played wrong. My fingers where flat and collapsed at the first joint and when I switched teachers 5 years ago, she told me I will never be able to play with the right touch to play pieces like Dr. Gradus ad Parnassum with my fingers collapsed like that. And she was right, I couldn't. My fingers were all collapsed. I didn't have the right touch. It felt natural to me my old way of playing but I would never reach a high level of playing with my technique being so poor. For about a year, I tried to play with my fingers curved and tried not to collapse them. 1 year after trying to correct my playing I developed a very serious focal hand dystonia in both my hands. Then for 4 more years I am still trying to correct the problem. I have learned in your book, so far, that I cannot correct the this dystonia by using my neocortex trying to focus on my fingers while playing trying not to over curl them or try to not make them stick straight up and down. I have tried to control these dystonia spasms for 4 years and have failed and now I know why after reading 5 chapters of your book so far. My question is, I want to be healed of my focal hand dystonia but I do not want to go back to my old way of playing. I understand some people play with less curved fingers than other people but to collapse the finger is never acceptable and if someone plays this way they will never reach a high level on the piano. I am wondering if it is possible for me, I am around 40 years of age now, to be healed of dystonia without going back to my old way of playing before focal dystonia? I want to be healed of this dystonia but come out of it with better technique then before I got this disease. Please can you let me know if this is possible?. By the way, now with this focal dystonia, my fingers are all contorted while I play on top of still collapsing my fingers. I am all a mess. Your book is giving me hope. Please can you let me know what you think? Thank you.

Scott, Wooten, Webster too. What if the reason is the desynchronization? Focal dystonia is a neurological disease. The signal from the brain does not reach the hands properly. These famous musicians play complex music and they all do our “favorite” exercises for desynchronizing the left and right hands, fingers and all. What if this dystonia is caused by a ripping off “natural” signal chains from the brain to/between the hands? What do you guys think about this idea?
