Driving a car after drinking, and killing someone because of that should be considered premeditated homicide. Even wasted drunks know they shouldn't drive, but they make the choice to do it anyway. A drunk in a SUV ran a red light in my town on a Saturday afternoon. He T-boned a car, killing the woman driver. His kids were not buckled in and were ejected on to the street. As bystanders rushed to give first aid to the kids and the driver, the drunk stumbled around the scene, angrily ranting “Now I have to get new car!” He never looked at his kids, the car he hit, or the dying woman. A news article said it was his 5th DUI arrest (and second crash) in three years. He had major political connections, so his trial was delayed for three years, apparently hoping people would forget. He didn’t get jail or lose his license. He never expressed regret, but issued statement at his trial, promising to “do better.” I kept track because the woman killed was a coworker, and ironically, three other coworkers were at the intersection when the crash occurred. They were giving the kids and our coworker first aid. A news report showed him getting in a care and driving away from the courthouse.

Life without parole? What a ridiculous suggestion. We already have to many laws in this country, and the sentencing is already to harsh. We have more people in prison, serving longer sentences than anywhere else in the world. And you want more? That's a ridiculous notion, because it's blatantly OBVIOUS that it doesn't work! I even see comments here in favor of another prohibition, like back in the 20's. Which ALSO didn't work. To propose these hair brained ideas, is on par with saying making guns illegal, will stop people from shooting others. But anyone with a brain, knows making guns illegal wont stop the shootings. Why? Because criminal do NOT obey the law! There will always be a gun they can get their hands on. Illegal or not. And as for these drinkers? There will always be alcohol available, even if illegal, just as there was during prohibition. The fact is, people make mistakes. No one is perfect. Everyone at sometime in their life, has used very poor judgement at least once. At least! Now, if someone has a track record, of using alcohol and poor judgement repeatedly, yes, that changes things, and more drastic measure must be taken. Perhaps a three strike rule or similar. But as for all those people ready to start a linch mob? Thats not the answer. Because that wont ever help solve the problem. All it does is appease a few people's vindictive revenge for what occurred. A vehicle accident is just that. An accident. Show me one convicted drunk driver who wanted to intentionally kill other innocent people in a crash, and I'll agree those people deserve a life sentence. But, you won't find them.

My opinion on driving drunk is that the penalties shouldnt be so much emphasized on the drinking (the addiction part of the action) but on the actual act of killing the people. I think this way because there's plenty of people that drink and drive that get caught up in the system that aren't technically wreckless and don't cause accidents or fatalities that are completely harmless to the world. I think some people can handle their substances whether it be alcohol weed coke or whatever and some people can't. I think the penalties for actually injuring people or killing people should be much more stiff. I just think accidents like these should be treated like wreckless drivers. I think criminalizing the disease of addiction doesn't help the people any. I think that criminalizing it people that have a problem are much less likely to talk about their problems or try to get help because of the stigma of it. I think people with addiction issues would be more likely to seek help and this in turn would help the people that want to get help get help before being the cause of an accident like this. That's just my opinion. I definately think people involved in accidents deserve stiff penalties. i just think we should go about the issue in courts and the judicial system alittle different. The thing is they aren't going to change the system. The system makes too much money snagging up people that might of had a beer or two and not ever have an accident. All those people fill up our jails while the actual wreckless drivers get released early to cause more chaos and destruction. I don't know if anyone here agrees with me. I would hope so.
