And the price on the menu in Thailand, in 99% of places, will be what you pay. In some of the higher end places they might and on VAT (7% I think) to the price shown on the menu and a service charge. And no tipping 20% of the bill. You can tip if you want but it's not expected. 😎😎😎⛱️⛱️⛱️🥵🥵🥵

Darren, stay in a hotel outside New York and take the Metro North daily into Grand Central then walk and when you get tired an occasional taxi. One of the best value tourist trips is the boat trip around Manhattan island with an excellent commentary.

Thank you for your transparency and your content, DJ. I loved my week in NYC (before China-19 hit). I didn't feel I got slugged too much for anything, and I feel I'm street-wise enough to not have the wool pulled over my eyes (not saying you're naïve, or that I'm immune to scams). If you like your creature comforts and excesses, New York will happily accommodate them... at a cost. Texas would be a great next US destination (I haven't been, personally, but definitely looks like a place I'd enjoy!).

DJ, yes New York is expensive but not everyone wants to rip you off. The places you went were for tourists, I'm sorry you didn't have the greatest experience however. I'm sure when I go to London, there will be places I go where I'll feel the same way you have. New York is a great place to visit but one must do their due diligence.

Disagree, I know someone who lives in New Jersey. He says all of NYC is a rip off for food. In London you are paying 30/40% less in the tourist traps. 50% in the places locals go to. There is no excuse charging $50+ for a basic steak.
@jglasernyc4 ай бұрын
@@northbankgooner6126 No arguing your point except I too live in Manhattan, food is expensive but not everywhere is a rip off. Does New York rip off tourists? You bet they do but us natives know where to find a bargain and stay away from the touristy places. No insult to the UK, I never felt I was being ripped off when I last visited there.

Was the $100 a day a hold on your card, which should be released after checkout? I know all the hotels have resort fees there, and I'm led to believe that's the same as all cities in the US nowadays, but I'd imagine NY is even higher than Vegas. I know a couple of the hotels I stay at in Vegas do that when I stay there, up to $1050, but it's instantly released on the card when I check out. It can take a few weeks if you use a debit card. The US is becoming increasingly more expensive the last few years, that's been my experience with Vegas, anyway. I'm cutting my trips back from one-two a year, to one every few years now, and going to stay in Europe for a bit.

Good video Darren 😊 Visited NY last September for a week with my partner, for my birthday. Flights were £2000. Hotel was £2,500 for a week!! Then food/drink/travel/entry costs, and city tax! (Ouch) We did stay round the corner from the World Trade Center, so maybe that had bearing on the hotel price. Was it worth it? - yes for the memories. You only live once! ❤

You know that every hotel tries to get the taxes extra even when it was included in the final price (i reserve 30min at the check out for that discussion), tips you know that you had to add 15 to 20%. Pay the meal cash then they have at least not to tax it. Manhattan is dirty and stinks, hotel under 500 are worn down and still cost 200+. The fast food stands pollute the city. The tube is unfortunately not the Moscow one. Basically you can go every 10 year to see how much they deteriorated from the last time.

Hello Darren. Well question is, at least for me. Did you enjoy your trip to NYC 🗽🤔👍👌 I know that some folk want to find out the cost of your " working holiday " fair enough. Part of the channel brief. The basics. Flight & Hotel +private car transfer. That's it for me. A general round up of spending money, not a dime by dime break down. This day and age we are all looking for a bargain, but mostly find rip off central 😢😥👎👎💔Best thing set yourself a daily limit, if only to keep a rough idea. So, next stop Thailand. Hopefully cheaper, but should be far more interesting and mind expanding. Carry on, take stock of your goals in life. Watch your health and fitness. Then live your life with your choices. All the very best Allan&Family

Like you Darren I used to travel to the USA lots, particularly to New York and Los Angeles. , However, some years ago now, I became disillusioned by the constant rip offs in these places. This, coupled with the appalling treatment at the hands of TSA agents at the airports resulted in me informing one of them on my last trip out of Newark that I would never set foot in their country again, and I never have.

New watcher here, and interested by your New York videos as I love New York. Only seen teh hot dog video, but will catch up with others. On the pricing you have listed so far, it seems you may have been overcharged for some things, and and went to a lot of tourist traps which wouldn't help either. For people saying its all a rip off and expensive, yes, New York can be very expensive, but I have been 5 times now, and last time was in March this year for 5 days, and I only spent about £650 whilst I was there all in, and that included some attractions too (such as Summit One Vanderbilt). There are tons of places to eat, and not everywhere is as expensive as Darren experienced. Also, I always travel with British Airways, and whilst not business class, you can typically get there for 4-5 nights for under £2000 (depending on time of year, hotel choice, etc), and that includes (for me) connecting flights from Newcastle to Heathrow, as well as the hotel (Yes, BA do big discounts for booking Flights + Hotel package). But for any sceptics, New York is well worth the visit, and doesn't HAVE to be expensive, to get there or to eat and see things either. EDIT: For someone who's been there 15 times or so, you seem to have fallen into every tourist trick/trap in the book, to be honest. No wonder it cost you about £5000 all in!!

When we checked in, the guy mumbled very quickly some stuff about needing to scan my card in case we used room service or started a tab at the bar - had no intention of doing either of course. Then I got a random charge to that card 4 days after the trip, which turned out to be a $33 dollars a night "City Tax"...it's a complete racket! We did Coney too as I'm a big Warriors fan..walked up the boardwalk for 30 mins and then got the metro straight back - weird vibe there to be honest! Tipping is also a massive headache; too confusing and seems outta hand. Enjoyed the NY vids though mate - maybe sleep on it for 5 years and go back! All that stuff aside, still a great place!

NYC is seriously expensive now. I’ve been to 🇺🇸 many times since the early 80’s. It’s a fantastic place for a holiday. Went to NYC just before Covid and it was quite expensive but went to Boston last autumn and couldn’t believe the staggering prices of absolutely everything. I blame Biden for the price hikes. As you say how do Americans afford the crazy prices over there? Your £3800 package sounded reasonable for business class. I’m also not a fan of these sneaky taxes and add ons that hotels put on now. It’s pure greed. There are better value destinations out there.

Totally agree, like I said before after watching all of the vids from this trip it’s certainly not somewhere I would ever go. Total rip off. Not for me. The amount they deducted from your hotel deposit is theft tbh.

Tbh its not a place I'd visit, but at least you went back, and now you know its not a place you'll go back too. Thailand next, which will be so much cheaper😊

Could be going there if I win a photo competition, the International Photography Awards, but "only" if I win, because travel expenses will be paid by the IPA if that happens. I also have family in Kearny, New Jersey, a 40 minute drive from Manhattan, so I think they would happily give their Scottish cousin shelter for a few nights, that will save me spending loads on hotels. I'll find out the outcome of the competition in a few weeks.

It’s not compulsory to give 100 per night …tell them NO…get assertive with the staff,..keep your card in your pocket....get in touch with your card supplier and get your refund ,you applied for that card for your use, not his use…tell him to apply for his own line of credit..oh and lets have a shout out of this lovely hotel you were at…sounds like a great hotel…

Darren, just a quick friendly note, be careful not to display any sensitive details on the sticky notes behind you and if you have change the details. Loving the vid 👍

Nothing sensitive there mate, it would only make sense to me

@@DarrenJohn Awesome, just wanted to make sure 👍I was keen to hear the price of the flight & hotels, and it sounds like you got a pretty good package deal there

I would find it more joyful getting a train to Delaware and just enjoying a real American town rather than getting ripped off 24/7 with other grockles in the big apple..awful experience..its as bad as having a week in London..

Hi everyone. I have watched Darren's vlogs for a long time now and the vast majority are fun, informative and balanced. I truly doubt that he posted his NY vids with the desire to persuade people not to visit the Big Apple. - he chose to pay for pricey flight and chauffeur-driven car to NY. Taxi or train are Much cheaper. - NY cuisine is not pizza, burger and hot dog. So much more to try out in this cultural melting pot. - eat in the Times Square district and you will get fleeced. It's like eating loads of meals on the Champs Elysees in Paris and saying the cost of food is very high🙄 - never buy in a restaurant or food truck that doesn't show prices!! - don't go to Nathan's on Coney Island and order a burger. How difficult is it to search 'famous hot dog eateries'🤦🏻♂️ - those who can, get out of the city in July and/or August. Just too hot! I could go on. The city has so much to offer. I don't think Darren meant to put people off visiting. Not his style👍

As mentioned in the video, I love the city, I find it breath taking, but lets be perfectly honest here, prices are ridiculous.

rack up avios airmiles if you fly BA alot you can then use these for free flights( just need to pay the tax) That Hotel tax at checkout feels like a rug pull. We stayed at the Novotel hotel Near Time Square with a Time Square View. There was no additional costs to pay. This was The September before the Pandemic so dont know if all hoteliers are now trying it on. DOnt know hpw they can tax you on something you didnt use. THey should have took your card details but not any $$$ if you didnt use there chargable facilities.
