So often videos like this are generic or promote fear. Thank you for not doing that. I'm a long time solo female traveler myself and these tips are really legit. Very nicely done. I will mention a flip side to your 'dress to blend in' tip. I travel a lot in places where there's no chance of me 'blending in' (Southeast Asia and Africa). That's when standing out and being a little extra friendly can help. A lot of people in an area that know you're there don't want anything bad to happen to you because they don't want a stain on their reputation (and they're just good people). Sometimes, sticking out has people looking out for you, especially if you've been nice to them. Just something to consider when blending in isn't an option.

I am always looking forward to your videos and have been waiting to sit down and watch this for days! I totally agree with what you said about arriving somewhere at night. I arrived in Morocco at night and was planning to couchsurf. From my host I knew how much I should be paying max. for a cab and that's what I ended up paying. The driver wanted way more than that, I refused to pay and went to the next drivers and all of a sudden that very first guy said yes. Knowing, ideally from locals, how much something should cost is a MUST. While I was previously afraid to bargain, I am no longer! :D

@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Hi Nic, thanks so much! I saved up $12K and I didn't have to manage my expenses because I just stayed in hostels, took public transit and, most importantly, traveled around cheap places like South East Asia and India. I didn't eat a fancy restaurants or drink a lot (booze will kill your budget) but I did do things like SCUBA diving and other more expensive adventure activities. If you travel cheap places, your money will go longer for sure.

Packing plays a major role in travelling. Pack your clothes and other stuff properly in bag; so you can carry all your stuff in just a one bag. Research as much as you can about the place you are traveling to. Plan your budget. Take book, phone and book your hotels in advance!

I think about them when I'm talking and I'm so into being able to give the best advice that I forget about feeling insecure or weird on camera. Also try to remember that it's not about you, it's about the information your trying to rely or the story you're trying to tell. That helps me as well :) Thanks so much and happy travels (and vlogging!)

@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
I have! Traveling with friends is great too :) My advice for traveling with friends (or partner, gf, bf, anyone!) would be to not have to be together ALL the time. Be okay going off on your own in a city every once in a while and don't depend on them to go with you everywhere you want to go. Talk about that beforehand so no one feels pressured to do things or go places they are not as interested in and be open and honest with each other while on the road. Traveling with friends is SO much fun! Although my preference is to travel solo, I do like traveling with friends every once in a while to share experiences with people I care about :) Happy travels!

Some nice tips I also found it VERY useful to take screenshots of your maps and of underground maps ; for when there is no internet. Also don't put all your eggs in one basket. Leave your passport in a safe place, and leave a bank card and some cash in a safe place.
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Thanks Yamstation! Screenshots are super helpful. Hm, being able to find two safe places to stash your passport one place and your bank card and cash somewhere else while you're traveling is a big ask. I typically find hostels and even hotels come with one locker or safe to stash your stuff so I would leave it all there when you're out and about in a city and then in transport (bus, train, plane, etc) keeping it all on you in a safe place. That's how I do it at least but everyone has their own ways I think :) Thanks for watching!

+Lindsay Mc hey yes I've watched all your videos like twice over lol!
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Sam Gatorade ha! Okay, awesome and thank you 😊 in Thailand, I would recommend staying at NapPark for your first night or two (I talked about them in this video) and then if you want to stay in Bangkok longer, you can look around for a cheaper spot. Def go to ChiangMai, stay at Julie's Guesthouse. It's like $2 a night and their breakfast is bomb but they will kick you out after a few nights if you don't buy one of their overpriced tours. If you want to do Elephant Nature Park, book that in advance and be sure you just do theirs bc a lot of companies say they are nice to the elephants but they are not (www.saveelephant.org.) I would recommend buying a counterfeit Lonely Planet guide when you're in Bangkok (they're like $2) and just everywhere you go, look up "the backpacker area" in the book and price compare guest houses when you get there. You don't need to book in advance and you'll pay more usually to do so. If you want to be SCUBA certified, do that on Koh Tao. Either through Roctopus or Big Blue. If you book with them for your Scuba Cert they will put you up for the duration of your classes. Stay at Firefly Guesthouse in Siem Reap. Do NOT miss out on Angkor, it's amazing. You've seen my videos so you know I recommend the three days but make sure you get a good bike. You probably need to do an online search and/or ask people when you get there where you can rent a good bike. Apparently Otres Beach has been bulldozed and they built a resort which sucks. You can go to Snhoukville (I am totally spelling that wrong but it's close enough lol) and stay at Monkey Bar or Monkey Bungalow... it's something with a money in its name. It's one of the most popular hostels/ guesthouses, it's super fun. Ahhh, South East Asia is the best! I hope this helps and that you have so much fun!!!

Hey, Lindsay! How do you feel about bringing equipment like a camera and laptop while solo traveling? I am one who loves to work on creative projects and am thinking about bringing some gear with me. I'm solo traveling for the first time in a couple of weeks to South East Asia and tried to strategically book hostels with lockers and have other security measures for my things when I leave it behind in my accommodations. Do you have any additional tips? I am curious to hear about your experience. Hope to hear from you soon!
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Hey Linda, I traveled all over South East Asia with my gear. I locked it up when I could but I also left it out as well. I know that sounds crazy and I would imagine other people wouldn't feel comfortable doing it but there were quite a few times I would just leave my laptop under my pillow or stashed in my bag on my bed in the dorm for the day while I was out. There were a few places that I didn't feel comfortable doing that but for the most part, I felt like it was safe even being out if the hostel didn't have a locker (I of course locked it up for the most part though.) Most hostels will have at least a small locker available for each bed. Just make sure you have a lock for it because they normally don't supply a lock. My GoPro was mounted on a pole that didn't find in lockers (it was like 2 and a half feet tall) so I usually would sleep with it on my bed or take the camera out of the mount and lock it up in the locker when I was out. I never had anything stolen from me in South East Asia and the only thing happened is one night, someone must have come back to the hostel kind of drunk because they stepped on my GoPole (and it had the camera in the mount) and cracked the mount. They didn't steal anything and I'm sure it was an accident but that's the only piece of tech that I had that got messed up while traveling. I recommend watching my packing video, basically the only thing I ever locked up was the little "kangaroo pouch" that I carried. Everything else would just be unlocked under my bed. I felt that South East Asia was more laid back when it came to having to watch my stuff than in Europe or India. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

hmm... spontaneous planning sounds a lot more expensive as you can't predict what rooms will still be available? is it though?
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Depends on the situation you're in. If you have some time and are flexible, spontaneous travel can save you money because you take advantage of last minute deals and take your time to compare and contrast prices on the ground of the places you're in. If you're on a super tight time frame or need to stay in certain places than booking in advance might be helpful as you won't have time to compare prices once you get there and/or can't take advantage of cheap last minute deals. I have a video on how to save money while traveling that has some tips on this as well. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipqloKl5jtyGbJY Hope this helps and happy travels!

hey there I have a question :) you already mentioned in your video that you try to hide your camera in your jacket or in your bag so you don't stand out. I am going to travel solo soon with a great big photo camera, meaning I of course want to take some photos. Do you have any tips on how to conceal the luxury item when I do take photos? I can't really hide it under my jacket, if you know what I mean 😝 & might I just add: your video was very helpful! You informed me a lot on small normal details that a lot of people forget to mention. So thank you very much :)
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Hi Ma Rie! Thanks so much, so happy to help! For your camera, it kind of depends on where you're traveling. I only hide my camera when I'm in transit (like on buses or walking around town.) I uncover it when I'm actually taking photos. I just try to keep it hidden when I'm not using it but I have it out and in view very often when I'm taking photos or video. Hope this helps and happy travels!

hey, I'm going to study for a month in Germany, can I do it with just one carry on? also, I'm really scared of traveling solo, I'm I'd be lonely and it would be weird visiting the city alone.
@WhatashameMaryJane6 жыл бұрын
Hey, no problem for the carry on, of course you can do it! There are many videos on KZbin that show you how to pack, I also made one - packing only a backpack for one month in Hungary-Norway-Germany. Travelling solo is scaring before you actually do it and especially the first time. You will realise very soon that there's nothing to be scared about. And if you don't want company to visit the city, that's no problem at all! Use the Cuchsurfing app to find other people like you that are in the same city and same situation and meet up for a tour of the place, or you can even contact a local through Couchsurfing who can show you his best spots!

hey ! I have a question in my mind that might sound stupid to you but still i am gonna ask . when you travel solo who takes your pictures ? who is there to accompany you ?
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Hey Vasu, not a stupid question at all! For my series ($30 a Day) I took all of that video myself, I just had a GoPro on a GoPole (a mount that holds the camera away from you.) I usually ask people to take a photo for me if I want a still picture and I'm traveling solo. Sometimes I set up my camera on a tripod but usually I just ask people to take a quick pic for me. It's the easiest and usually they want a photo if they're traveling solo or even traveling together as a couple and they both want to be in the photo together so we can help each other out :)

Sorry if this is a weird question, but I've recently had to be on medications for severe ADHD. Will this cause any issue while traveling? The medication is something that is illegal to possess if they aren't prescribed to you. Has anyone here had any issues with this?

SunlightSummer SunlightSummer hi Sunlight! Not a weird question at all. Travel with the pills in the original prescription bottle that has the medication name as well as your name on it. That way if you are questioned, you can show your ID and the bottle and it will prove it's yours and it was prescribed to you. This will help for domestic travel but please be sure your medication doesn't have anything illegal in it if you travel to other countries (an example of this is medicinal marijuana is legal some places in the states but that doesn't mean you can bring it to Thailand where marijuana is illegal. Country legalities differ so please be sure you check that in advance.) Hope this helps, thanks for watching and happy travels!

Thanks! It isn't marijuana, but where do I look up if it's illegal in other countries?

Here's a helpful article with links of where you can find if your medication is illegal in other countries www.osac.gov/pages/ContentReportDetails.aspx?cid=17386 :)

Hey Lindsay! how did you manage to survive in Paris for 30$ a day?
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Akash Vaid stay in a hostel outside of the city or couchsurf (couchsurfing.org) survive off of cheese, bread and cheap wine. Take the metro, bus or walk- don't even think of getting in a taxi to go anywhere. Happy travels!

Well, that was quick! (and helpful) Your vlogs are super amazing and inspiring. Have gone through most of them. I'll be going on my first ever solo trip to Europe this July. What is the ideal time to send requests to people on couchsurfing?

but sorry, i mean like if u gon travel shouldnt u book ur hostels in advance????? i mean then its cheaper right? pls answer :D
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Hi! It's up to you - I would rather not book in advance. I will just go to the backpacker area and walk around to price compare hostels and I find it to be cheaper that way. If you're new to traveling, book your first few hostels in advance until you're more comfortable then you'll be able to feel okay going with the flow.
