I've been travelling solo around the world for the past two years and while I enjoy trips with family and friends, you cannot beat going it alone. The flexibility of being able to do what you want to do and go at your own pace. I also find that you meet more people when you travel solo because people are really interested to know why you're there alone. Safety is important though and it's something that you have to bear in mind.

Thank you so much for sharing these 5 tips Lindsay. It is so sad that some women can be put off traveling solo due to fear after hearing so many scare stories, but they'd be missing out on so much in life. I'd like to add though that I strongly believe that we solo female travelers should also know ways to defend ourselves if we are ever being attacked and help to lessen our fears. Not all of us have time to take self defense classes however, so I'd like to share some tips which I have learned. I've been taking Krav Maga for women classes for self-defense and I've learned that the best self- defense targets on a mans body for women, and the best ways of striking them are as follows: - the eyes (finger poke them) - the nose (palm heel strike upwards) - the throat (chopping like actions) - the testicles (knee / kick / punch / slap / grab-twist-pull and *hold on to them tightly* until he collapses and passes out within a matter of seconds) - the knees (sideways kick to dislocate) I've been taught that even a trained, determined teenage girl could easily take down a man if she goes for these targets, especially if she goes *fast* and *hard* for the *eyes* or the *testicles* (or "high balls" and "low balls" as I've also heard them called.) If a man has removed his trousers and he is about to rape you, then *his testicles will now be extremely vulnerable* to a "grab, twist, pull and hold" counterattack. You should snatch them and keep squeezing and pulling them as hard as you can until he passes out in under 8 seconds - and trust me, he will. You can even use both hands, and it's still just as effective even if you only manage to get hold of one testicle. When a man has his testicles forcefully squeezed it causes him to curl over, collapse, convulse and quickly lose all of his strength before he collapses and passes out or goes into shock in under 8 seconds. Most importantly this holds true no matter how big and strong he is - a wonderful natural advantage we females have, and we should all be more aware of it and how to do it. We can all take advantage of the extreme vulnerability of a mans testicles to being squeezed if we're ever being attacked and his testicles become within reach. After all, this is a powerful natural advantage in combat *all* females have. I really wish that more women and girls were made aware of this technique. It has literally saved many women throughout the world. The women of Somalia for example even have a name for it and they call the move "Qworegoys". Mothers teach their daughters to reach under their attackers tunic and grab, twist, and pull his testicles until he passes out, and to also tuck their head in until the point he loses consciousness in case he initially starts to fight back. We can all stay safe and lessen our fears if we know how and where to strike on an attackers body.

I know this will sound silly but my first solo trip was to Disney World and honestly it was an amazing trip and learning experience. I learned a lot about my travel style and actually how to take care of my health on vacation. Disney may sound easy but it can be intense if you're not prepared or you underestimate what you need. It also teaches you how to have a great time on a budget because it can be extremely expensive but if you can budget there, you can budget anywhere. I've gone on a few solo trips since then (first fully solo international trip in 2 months !!) and had a great time all because of what I learned at Disney 😁

Solo travel can be scary, especially if it's your first time traveling alone. I’m also solo traveler. I've been travelling solo around the world for the past few years. Solo travelling allows you to explore places at your own pace, and you can meet new people when you travel.

I totally agree with your points. Honestly, you can't worry about all the little things. Be prepared, don't be oblivious to your surroundings, but most of the time you are just as safe as being in America. I usually do my research on locations first, so I usually stay away from unsafe countries.
@GlobalAdventurer7 жыл бұрын
You hit all the major points. Your last point is so important to any traveler, to focus on their trip in the here and now without consuming a lot of that time with associates and family back home, no matter how pissed off they may get. You rob your enjoyment by trying to please them and in turn diminish your travel experience.

Last year I did a last minute trip to Rome for a week so I decided to book through a travel group so that they can get everything together and since I was traveling solo and never been to Europe and it was great. It gave me the courage I needed and am now doing a three week solo trip to Greece this June. I am nervous because this time I am completely on my own so I make sure I did some research and make an itinerary of everywhere I want to go and the times the place places close. Plus I printed out all my hotel/Airbnb info along with copies of my passport. All I have to worry about is figuring out the transportation once I get there. Though I have everything I think I need together, I still feel nervous to be solo traveling since it is my first time. Your videos have helped me figure out what to expect when traveling solo.

Lindsay Mc I'm 2 days in at breakfast and feeling a bit jaded I need a day in the hotel. I'm over the tourist trap places that the guides purposely take you to to get you to spend money it was really draining. Bali is good but they are just after tourists money it kinda taints the experience.
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Hey! I'm traveling right now so I can't write the longest response but I recommend looking up hostels around where you are and checking into the highest "social" rated one. Hostels are way better places to meet other travelers who can give you the local tips and tricks to avoid ending up on the tourist track. In touristy areas it's best to rely on other travelers for info as many of the locals living in a touristy area could be in on the game (as in they work in the tourist industry) and may point you in a direction that they think westerns want (lots of travelers actually want the touristy stuff believe it or not.) Find a hostel, talk with the staff and other travelers who can point you in the right direction. You can get a private room in most hostels if you don't want to be in the dorms. Sometimes even just a few hours out of town can make all the difference- good luck and happy travels!
@Matowix7 жыл бұрын
Lindsay Mc I had a better day today the people at the hotel are genuinely friendly. Unfortunately doing popular tourist stuff involves dealing with the people pushing to sell stuff at gift shops I guess

I that you said start small. Many travel vloggers I've watched don't say this. I belive that the only way, not just the best way to feel comfortable and confident with solo travel is to start small by going to destinations close to your home town. I did that. My first solo trip was to Chicago when I was in college. I had so much fun I went there many times. Then I started visiting other American cities such as Las Vegas, Boston, Washington D.C. I'm now planning a trip to New York City.

"I don't know what I am doing" - who does? You don't know the place. "You won't make any friends or you will be homesick" - introverted as I am, I think it would be impossible not to make at least a friend, and being homesick... yeh... might happen. "You will probably get sick" - I hadn't really thought much about this... but in Europe we have this European Health Card so it would be fine to go to a hospital if necessary. And if an insurance would suffice to go to other places, then it should be that bad, I guess. But my fears are the other things you mentioned... "Something bad could happen" + "I'll lose my passport/get robbed". I might one day manage to do a little trip on my own.

e.lxe. Hm, I LOVED traveling alone. I loved waking up every day and deciding right then and there what I wanted to do for the day without having to consult with a travel buddy. I loved meeting new people and traveling with them for a bit, sharing fun experiences and then parting ways (and starting the process again.) I really really loved getting to know about myself more and about places and learning how exactly I’d like to spend my time when there wasn’t anyone to think about other than myself. I do like traveling with people sometimes and some places but usually, I prefer to travel on my own. Maybe it’s how you look at it and how much independence you crave when you travel - I don’t think either is better or worse, just different personality choices maybe :)

I want to do a student exchange program and my parents are all for and trying to push me to do it (there is a program where if they host a family, I can go with a host family for free in another country) but I am just to scared. It probably wont happen for another year or so if at all, but I'm mostly terrified of traveling alone on a plane and going through airport security alone at the age of 14-15. Any tips?
@lindsaymccormick96077 жыл бұрын
Hi Jayden, is it the flight that scares you most? Have you flown much with friends or family? The more you do it the less scary it can be. Are you more afraid of flying or traveling? Maybe try to take short domestic flights with family or friends and take weekend trips until you feel more comfortable. Then when you take the big flight to your exchange program, it won't seem so new :)
