Maserati 5000 gt and Lamborghini the 350 gt are so pretty to look at. If I owned one it would be terrifying to drive it these days with all the cars around.

As a Swiss guy I am a big fan of Peter Monteverdi's cars. He died far too young in 1998 and was the last real Swiss constructor of cars. Originally from Binningen, close to Basel. Unfortunately his museum in Binningen does not exist anymore, but there is a nice collection of his technical genius in the Swiss Museum of transport in Lucerne, the well-known "Verkehrshaus".

I'm not Swiss, but when I was a kid I dreamed of having a Monteverdi; the idea of combining European style with big honkin' American V-8 horsepower was really appealing. When the Hai was teased it got a lot of attention in US car magazines, since the idea of a mid-engine car with a 426 Hemi (rated at 425 hp, but actually producing 500 or so) was beyond awesome. Unfortunately, they only built maybe two of them.

@@loumencken9644 The Hai (which actually translates "shark" in German) was used in 2008 by the Swiss bank UBS in an advertisment, just a few month after the outbreak of the global financial crisis when UBS almost went bankruptcy. The ad showed the car from a sideview with the slogan "We will never give up". Last year I was working for a Swiss newspaper in Finance and I would have liked to write an article about exactly the model in the ad: What happended to it 10 years after? But nobody was interested in the subject.
@loumencken9644
@loumencken9644 4 жыл бұрын
@@danielschmuki6831 Well, I would have been interested! I did some quick internet research and found there were actually four Hai cars produced. The original prototype designated the 450SS, a second prototype with a few minor changes designated the 450GTS, and two cars built by Monteverdi in the 1990s from leftover parts. Wikipedia says the two parts cars ended up in a museum in Lucerne, Switzerland; maybe one of the parts cars was borrowed from the museum for the bank ad. An article on supercars.net says the 450SS was sold by Monteverdi in 1971 to a private buyer and has been sold and resold to various private owners since, but nothing in the article on what happened to the 450GTS. The supercars.net article also says that after Monteverdi showed the 450SS at the 1970 Geneva Auto Show, he got zero orders for it because of the high price- $27,000 USD! I ran that amount through a couple of CPI calculators, which said it's equivalent to around $180,000 in 2020 dollars, a relatively paltry sum in this day and age of $3 million Bugatti Chirons and Aston Martin Valkyries. BTW, Jay Leno owns a High Speed 375 and just posted a video about it a couple days ago on his KZbin channel, Jay Leno's Garage. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure it's worth a look for even a casual Monteverdi fan. Leno, like me, has an interest in European GT cars with American V-8s, but unlike me he has plenty of money to buy such cars; if memory serves, I think in addition to the Monteverdi he has a Jensen Interceptor, a Bizzarrini, and maybe an Iso Grifo and/or Rivolta.

My Yankee-Doodle-Dandied self greatly appreciates those. I personally thought it was a shame the Hai was never mass-produced in any great numbers. It really would have challenged the Italian stronghold quite well. As for my own choice to be added to this list, it would be the Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk . It certainly qualifies I believe. One of the few times we in the United States actually tried our hand at European-style elegance. It is a great car but virtually unappreciated.

Thank you for this, as there were indeed a couple of cars I had not known before now. My first encounter with a Lambo 350GT was in a field at the back of a church in south Oxfordshire. It was a gathering of all makes organised by the Jag Enthusiasts club. I parked my Bristol up and the next car to drive into the field and park next to me was a 350GT with what must be the most expensive registration mark for a Lambo of 'LAM 1' Also in that field was a Jag C type owned by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd. My only encounter with a Monteverdi was in a filling station, and when it left, I followed it down the M40 for about 15 miles. With regard to the Lambo Espada, I was walking past a roundabout late one night, only a stones throw from my house, and an Espada was heading straight for the roundabout at I would judge to be about 45MPH and I thought he had not noticed the roundabout in front of him and expected to see the Espada go crashing across the roundabout. But fair play to the driver, as he obviously knew his car, as he (or she?) did not brake or take their foot off the gas and just flew the car around the roundabout.

The Lambo 350GT is on my Top 5 dream list...never forgot the 1st time I saw one in person. I remember back in the 80's when I could have had a Maserati 3500GT for under $10k & a couple of Espada's for under 20k! Had no idea back then that car boom was on it's way, seemed to occur after Enzo's death...

The Espada may well be my favorite Lamborghini. It's got all the goodies of a GT car, such as the exotic engine in front and a sorted chassis, but I've always thought the styling was weird yet very appealing. I consider it one of designer Marcello Gandini's most intriguing creations.

The Isuzu and Corvette Rondine are the only two on this list I'd never heard of. The Isuzu has a real nice shape to it and it sounded like it had a bit of grunt as well. Was the Corvette a one off styling exercise by Pininfarina or did they actually build a few of them. The back end of the Rondine is a wilder version of what actually came out on the FIAT 124 Spider also styled by Pininfarina. The Espada and 250 GT Lusso are the only two on this list I've actually seen in real life though. You should have entered the Monteverdi Hai on the list too. Wild looking!

Not sure what this title means. Admittedly, the Apollo 3500, the Corvette Rondine, and the pretty Isuzu coupe were unknown, but really! The Lambo 350GT & Espada, the Maserati 5000GT (or was it indeed a 3500GT), the Monteverdi 375/L (a 375/S on the other hand would be far less common), not to mention the Ferrari 500 Superfast and 250 GT Lusso. Some of these cars I have even ridden or at least sat in. The Cunningham C3 is a rare beast, just like the Ferrari Superfast.

When I went to Watkins Glen in 1974 for the USGP, I had to park off the circuit if I wanted to have any chance of getting on my flight out. On the way back to the infield I saw a car badged as a Ferrari 375L. Back then I was pretty much up to speed on offerings from Europe, so I knew it was a Monteverdi. I’ve always figured it was badged as it was to cut down on incessantly answering the question, “What’s a Monteverdi?”.

@@muzioscivola7771 The older cars had a shocking record of break downs. Look at the figures against the German cars Porsche in particular. As with Ferrari the old cars engines are hand-built with a great deal of human error plus Ferrari didn't care too much about the reliability and customer cars back then az they only cared about racing as said Enzo many times. He just sold cars to pay to go racing. And Maserati has never been great at build quality even today. I think you're talking about racing engineer as I'm talking about the reliability of customer cars which are two vastly different things Just google Ferrari v Porsche on reliability as that is the car they are mostly compared to pre '95 you will see Porsche comes out on top every time. So sorry, I stand by my statement. Mr diddly squat says bye and happy new year dude :)
