"Sie" (with a capital S) is used for the polite form (or at the beginning of a sentence), for example "Can you hand me the salt please?" - "Können Sie mir bitte das Salz reichen?". sie (small s) is used for talking about "her" or "they". I hope that helped! :)

I'm a little surprised with how much easier it is to learn German then I thought. And this probably applies to all languages, but you mainly just need to learn the alphabet and the verbs! Once you get a good grasp on where they need to go and how to use them, the rest is just memorizing words!

Swaggarafia I agree. The problem is mostly in the prepositions (auf, unter, über, durch, mit, in....) each asking for a specific "Kasus" (Fall). For beginners I can make it a little easier. We have four "Kasus" (Deklinationen, Fälle). 1: Nominativ (the word itself as a subject). 2) Genitiv (from Latin, it doesnt excist in any dialect- it is the posessive form, but there are many exceptions such as "Ich nehme mich Deiner an; Du beschuldigst mich wessen?; Ich tue das deinetwegen...) - dialekts replace the "Genitiv" with either the Dativ or the Akkusativ. 3) Dativ - which is very similar to the "complemento indirecto" = "lhe" in Portuguese; 4) Akkusativ - which is very similar to the "complemento directo" = "lo/o"" in Portuguese. I mention Portuguese because after 30 years it has become almost my second native language (the first being German). Yep, I'm that old.

It's the subjunctive form of the verb sein and it's used mainly in indirect speech - you're repeating what someone else said or thinks - in this case "Meine Schwester denkt, sie sei" means "I'm not vouching for the accuracy of what my sister thinks,but she thinks she's the strongest woman in the world". "Sie ist" would literally mean "she is the strongest woman in the world" and would be used if the speaker actually believed that of his sister.

Nicht likes to travel all the way to the end of a sentence at times. This happens most often with declarative sentences. Sie arbeitet nicht. (She is not working.) -> A sentence with just a subject and verb. Er hilft mir nicht. (He doesn't help me.) -> A sentence with a direct object (mir).

It's called the subjunctive mood (Konjunktiv 1). Here the verb "seien" is used instead of the normal "sein" when you are quoting someone's speech or opinions etc indirectly. E.g. "Er sagt, sie sei in der Stadt." = "He says that she's in town". Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a native speaker.

Ever heard of "konjungtiv"? You use "sei" in this sentence because the sister believes she is the strongest girl in the world. But it is actually not a fact that she is the strongest girl in the world. BUT most germans would say "ist" instead of "sei". Because sometimes it can be quite confusing (even for germans themselves) to use the right grammatical word. I hope I could help you... ^^

I am trying to teach myself some basic German even though there is virtually no one where I live who speaks it. I have a cassette course and an extensive Larousse German Dictionary. The way I do it is I try to learn some phrases, then look for similar patterns in verbs and verb endings as well as the way articles change (die becomes diesen, etc.). Then I attempt to learn some grammar. Then more phrases, etc. I have no idea if that will work. My brain is a bit langsam most of the time.

Dann kann ich mich ja auch mit deutschen Leuten unterhalten. (Then I can have conversations with german people.) / Dann kann ich ja mit deutschen Leuten schon relativ gut kommunizieren. (Then I can already communicate with german people relatively well.) Now I have to guess a bit about what you actually meant: Ich darf nicht allzu lange am Computer bleiben, da meine Familie/Eltern es mir nicht erlaubt/erlauben. (My family/parents don't allow me to stay at the computer for too long. ["muss" can't really be used in this sentence - mustn't = darf nicht - it's a false friend from EnglischGerman]) Aber ich möchte gerne all deine Videos auf KZbin sehen, da ich meine Deutschkenntnisse aufbessern will. (But I would like to see all your videos on KZbin, as I want to improve my German skills. ["brauche" isn't really used in these conditions. It is more likely to be used, if you need to acquire something specific. - Sidenote: "Deutsch" means "language of the people/belonging to the people". Even a lot of Germans don't know that. ;-) ]) In zwei Stunden gehe ich zur Universität, weil ich dort eine Englischstunde habe. (I'm going to the university in two hours, as I have an english lesson there. [I guess you meant "in", as "nach" = "after" didn't really make sense to me in this context. - Also: German uses a lot of neologism. We construct new words by pasting two words onto each other, hence "Englischstunde" = "english lesson".) Ich mag auch die englische Sprache und träume davon, als Englischlehrerin in Deutschland zu arbeiten.(I also like the english language and I'm dreaming of working as an english teacher in Germany. [Good luck on getting your diploma, btw! Otherwise you probably won't find a job here.]) :-| Derzeit wohne ich in Tunesien und ich denke, dass meine Träume nicht so logisch sind. (Now I'm living in Tunisia and I think, that my dreams aren't so logical. [You rather would use "realistisch" = "realistic" in this context, though.]) Greetings from Germany. Hallo! Enjoy your videos. I'm a little confused by the dürfen sentences as they don't have the verbs 'gehen' or 'fahren' in them. I read it as 'I am not allowed with on the class trip.' It seems like there should be a verb there to insinuate 'going' or 'traveling' or some other type of movement. Does 'mit auf' take the place of this type of verb? Or is there another reason why a verb like 'gehen' is not used in these sentences? Thank you.

Why is "sie sei" but not "sie ist"?
@Lauert_von_Berndsen9 жыл бұрын
+Joan Costa Hernández "sei" is a subjunctive mood, specifically the "Konjunktiv I" of "sein". So if you use it in indirect speech, you express that you neither confirm nor refute what was being said. If you use the indicative form instead ("ist") it would mean that you are sure that it really is that way. If you use the "Konjunktiv II" ("wäre") it would express that you do not think that it is true ("Irrealis").
