I was a runner for many more years than the two years I’ve been jumping rope. I have to say that if there were a way to track happiness, there would be no question that jumping rope beats all other cardio activities except for maybe dancing. I’m much happier jumping rope than I was running (that’s actually saying a lot because I enjoyed running.)

Hey JRD, I agree with you at 6.10 that JR builds cardio-vascular fitness and endurance. I became a runner by accident after skipping for 1.5 years. My marathon time is below 3 hours and I ran it within 3 months from the first day I started to run. That's the power of JR, which I discovered through you guys. Kudos to you guys. I suggest you guys broaden your videos to include: (1) The specific types of skips that will assist runners. For example, high knees, alternate high knees, squat jumps, double unders, single leg jumps, etc and the appropriate ropes for each of these skips (which will of course depend on the intensity of the intended runs; for example, I use the grey Crossrope for squat jumps - it helps build my quads, bearing in mind that when running it is best to recruit as many muscle fibres as necessary). (2) Jumping rope to warm up before an intense run. There is a study by Felipe Garcia Pinillos that says that skipping is more effective than a run when warming up; but that is limited to amateur runners. For non-amateur runners like me, I do a slow run to warm up (to give my legs the turnover), skip to elevate my HR in preparation for my intense run, and doing some running strides to get my muscles to memorize that I am going to run fast soon. The link to a commentary of the study is appended below. www.womensrunning.com/training/cross-training/jump-rope-warm-up-for-speed/ The full research was conducted by Felipe Garcia Pinillos, which should be available on a Google search. But here is a direct link to download the research paper (a very interesting read): www.researchgate.net/publication/339879052_Jump-Rope_Training_Improved_3-km_Time-Trial_Performance_in_Endurance_Runners_via_Enhanced_Lower-Limb_Reactivity_and_Foot-Arch_Stiffness Keep up the good work guys!
@mango850
@mango850 Жыл бұрын
As a runner, I just started jumping rope to warm up - 10mins prior. Jumping rope (skipping rope) definitely gets me to zone 4 quicker than running. I imagine jumping rope for 30mins would burn at least as many calories as running, probably more. It's like sprinting for 30 minutes. Each has its benefits though. While jumping rope works upper body, running outside deals up a harsher environment (weather, hills, cars!) and thus toughening mentality. If you can run in snow on Chicago's Lakeshore Drive in -10C temperature, you can conquer anything. Also, I've tested Whoop for six months on both wrist and bicep, and it doesn't pick up heart rate correctly the first 5-10 mins of running (compared with Garmin and Apple which were more consistent with each other). Wrist measurement generally isn't best - it would be great if you guys did another test using electrical signals from chest bands, which are more accurate.

Benefits from running (not mentioned): 1. Terrain and view. You can experience hills and roads and tracks and views. My favourite park run is around a lake and we have spectacular mountain and beach views and pretty good architecture as well around the area. 2. Jogging and chatting with friends. Jumprope is a bit more intense than running so can you keep up a conversation with someone and is it really the same as running together? Thanks for a great video. Running has always been my first love, but I really want to get into jumprope. It certainly is something I can do indoors on bad weather days to keep up my fitness.

During the pandemic, I could not go to the gym so I started skipping. I previously would go to the gym and slow jog for 20 min and sometimes do a bit of interval running 3min x 3. I started skipping for 2min with a 1min rest x 4 then 3min with a 1min rest x 4 after several months worked up to 3min x 10 then I just started to skip straight 15min, progressed to 20min and finallly 30min. Went from a muscular but chubby 210 to 185 pounds. Mixed in sprint training once I got to 185 pounds and my weight went to 175, lean and muscular. Now I am 175 peaked, and 180 normal. The diet also is pretty sharp. Less the 2400 calories per day, was massively underestimating what I was eating and when peaking around 1800 calories per day. Im 47, feel great!!!

Another great video; one important element not addressed though is injury risk. I love running and have run for several decades, but inevitably would eventually get injured due to the impact and the fact that there are more components to get injured through running - hamstrings, knees, achilles, calves, etc (far less with jumping rope); when I first started jumping rope a few years ago, I had a few bouts of calf injuries, maybe due to doing too much too soon, but once I overcame those (knock on wood), I have remained injury free jumping rope for several years and have shied away from running. That's a huge factor as well because you can't burn too many calories if you're sidelined.

Interesting video, however something the study forgot to acknowledge is the calorie burn you get after working out, and this is especially true when you're using a weighted rope which engages more of your muscles. As a result, sore muscle during an active recovery phase will keep losing you calries for at least a day after the workout I know the study was made more for the workout in mind and not the recovery, but something to think about if you're doing 10 mins weighted rope vs speed rope Just bought the JRD power handles recently, beautiful lil guys

i would still say jump rope will still burns more calories because youre useing way more static energy on the basic movement itself, if you start doing criss cross double unders and so on it increases your strain to the extremes which results in more calories burned. if you compare 5 min jumping to 5 min of running on a beginner status you will instantly see that cant even jump 30 secs with almost dieing, while you can easily jog 30 sec.

🤭 yeah your eyes burn you don't have a hat or headband, use the sleeve that you cut off your shirt for a headband, you can go fighters approach and use jelly, but use something. You said something very important "weighted ropes" for upper body you can use wrist/ hand/ glove weights for jogging. Jogged 4-5 miles 4-5x a week for 3 months, put on 1.5pd glove and quit before 2mls! Vest and thigh weights are great, but not a fan of ankle (easy knee issues). I really need to get back into rope because my foot strike time I never had to think about much and balance. If your multisport and pushing off quick very seldom do you get caught "flatfoot". Heyy JRD! Could you give me an idea of how much an ideal weighted jump rope should weigh? Thanks love the vids btw!
@DannyB587
@DannyB587 Жыл бұрын
I know I'm not JRD, but I'd say the ideal weighted rope is the 1/2 lb. It's not so heavy that you can't build up some speed or do tricks, but it gives you a crazy muscular burn especially in your shoulders and arms.

I've jumped rope since like back in maybe 2020, I don't really remember, I've been jumping rope for almost 3 years now and I'm trying to lose weight and gain muscle. and Jogging I like it for now, better than running becuase jogging is better and for me running and sprinting gets me tired, and I am suppose to get tired, and I am a track and field athlete, but for me I would choose jumping rope better than running and more

My job requires me to be able to run 1.5 miles within a time limit. I feel like the best exercise one could perform to improve running would be to run. Also, there's more utility in running than jump rope. Jumping rope is good cardio, but running takes me from point A to point B faster. Also, since running is higher impact, it is better at creating greater bone density because of the microfractures. Last but not least, running takes a physical AND mental toll that nothing else does. It's such a boring and torturous thing, so much that I feel like I just slayed a dragon after every run. There's a mental fortutude I build from running that nothing else can compete with. Jumping rope is more accessible and better on the joints, but I think running just has more advantages.

I love Jump Rope I love weight lifting but I am trying to finish my weight lift on my alternate days since I do full body with weight lifting so about 3 to 4 times a week weight lifting then everyday jump rope besides maybe one day for rest. I absolutely LOVE jump roping it's soo fun I hated cardio foreverrrrr running and cross country machines were just a chore and boring as hell but jump rope all the tricks I can do crossovers, running crossover, boxer step heel toe step hell the works learning tons it's soo much fun plus! I met quite a few people in the gym who tried jump rope but never were too good with it I told them I only started a few months ago and they are amazed at how good I have gotten I am like once you love something you can't stop. Plus they are professional boxers soo learning a ton from them just an amazing experience changed my life forever! can't thank the community and jump rope dudes and others the best!

I train a LOT and if you want to talk about upper body, I'd recommend an elliptic bike as you can concentrate on the push/pull aspect. Even rowing does not have the "push" aspect. This exercises you chest and back, biceps and triceps, but without the impact of either running or jump rope. Also , some of these bikes can be pedalled backwards, which is good for the quads. You can run backwards of course; but that's no fun outdoors over a long distance

After doing the math, you burned nearly 2 calories more jumping rope. However, as you mentioned, skipping will work some upper body as well. I recommend both, both are great, and jogging allows you to get out and enjoy the wilderness.

I happily run 10k Monday - Friday past few weeks. Started running as hobby only 3 months ago. But skipping rope bores me to death, not that i don't know what to do with it. I'm African, as a kid all we had was football and skipping rope so ive been around it for long time playing with it. I just never had any passion for it. 5 mins and i am so done with it.
