For me, the hat thing is simply a leftover habit I picked up in the military. Went to a Navy highschool and joined the Army, so I had the rules regarding covers hardwired into me. Instinctively take off my cover indoors, and just feel uncomfortable without some form of one outside.
@LaGiaGarcia2 жыл бұрын
Etiquette consultant here! The elbows rule actually comes from the British navy. The British desperately needed sailors in their navy and if you had your elbows on the table at the pub, it meant you had experience on a ship eating to not let your food slide around. You would get knocked out with a 2x4, then wake up on a boat on the way to Shanghai. They’d say, “Welcome to the British Navy”. Also, if you’re French, elbows are perfectly admissible on the table.

If a man takes lady out, he pays. I always open the door and I make a point when walking with a lady to stay between her and traffic when applicable. I may be old school but I was raised that as men we are the protectors. I have never had a woman react negatively to being treated like a lady.

You made the right choice. I'm in fashion and I can tell you that it's better to be overdressed than underdressed. I hate those types of vague descriptions of dress requirement. It's comes off as if HR or the person who came up with the preferred interview standard tried to be smarter than they were. I prefer just stating what you require: jacket/no jacket, button down shirt with a collar/no tee shirts, tie/no tie, dress slacks/no jeans/no khaki a.k.a no cotton slacks, dress shoes/no sneakers. For one job interview the HR rep actually stated "please don't show up wearing western boots". I wore my pair of semi brouges chukkas just to push the limits. The interview went great, but did not get the job.

I've seen a couple other reasons for why elbows on the table is considered rude. Apparently sailors used to use their elbows to steady their tables out at sea to make sure their plates didnt move around, and apparently got so used to the practice that they did it even on dry land in pubs etc. According to this account, sailors dont have the best image of cleanliness or being friendly so it was considered rude to do what the rude sailors do. A second reason ive seen is that when English kings would invite viking invaders in to try and settle disputes and create treaties, they would provide a feast to get on their good side, and what the vikings would do, if there was room, was to put their elbows on the table to symbolize "You are poor, and cant even provide a full table worth of food for your guests", and so it became extremely insulting to the host, as to say they are too poor to provide for the situation.
@oxysoxos5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Keeping your elbows off the table just looks better and tends to give you a straighter more confident looking posture. I hate when people rest one arm on the table while eating and holding the fork with the other hand.

Common sense & experience in the real world should have these guys hold the damn phone with the off hand that way you are able to react to a situation if need be & you always have your arm at your side by the holstered weapon to prevent someone from trying to grab it. Not that it will happen but it has been documented to occur & the outcome is never good. Good Day to You!

Some "detail opinions" from a European perspective. I'm Dutch, and lived and/or worked in several European countries with "professional exposure" to the US, Canada and Asia. There are cultural differences between all these regions. Elbows on the table are a big no-no, as it usually go's hand-in-hand with other bad table manners. Keep your forearms rested on the table if you have to, but keep the elbows off the table. Shirts not tucked is juvenile, and kills your adult status in the office. Don't do this! Leather does not need to match on every account as stated in the video. But black shoes with brown belts or vice-versa looks shabby. As many men wear what their spouses are preparing for them, it indirectly insults your wife if you do not take note of this!

Nope.. They don't make you a better man. What makes better man is if you don't side with injustice in today's age. Don't support bullying, help an old lady cross the street,, buy a burger to the homeless. The fuck are you saying taking off your hat makes you a better man. Delusional.

I can understand about a manual laborer, but as a project manager, I will always suit-up for an interview. I've noticed that in any office setting, that is still the norm. I follow the "dress for the occasion" rule. I've gone to casual settings before in a suit, but I carry a tie in my jacket just in case it's needed.

As a veteran as well, we were required to remove our headgear when entering a building. There were no hat racks to be found in military buildings either. Find a place to put your hat, it's not that difficult.

So regarding the opening of doors. I come from a Afrikaans background and we are brought up to show respect to elders and ladies. And I have always opened doors for women. And yes I have come across opening a door to a woman once who was in fact a feminist vibe "pfft'ing" me and say she doesn't need me to open it. And my response was simply saying to her I am not just doing it for her but doing it because it is in my character to show respect.

Sadly I've lived that "crazy feminist" moment. I do hold doors open for anyone regardless of what sex they are. I've still had some lunatic scream at me for being sexist when I've done held the door for her. I slammed that door in her face. She looked startled but shockingly didn't carry on screaming at me. This was in a place I used to volunteer and it was in front of staff. Someone tried to get me in trouble for it but the staff thankfully took my side as they saw what transpired and they know I hold the door for anyone. P.S. Interesting fact, she was a part of a group we had there called the "Womens Group"... We also had a "Mens Group" that the Womens Group tried to have shut down on a few occasions. Despite the fact that that the Mens Group was primarily a help and support group for abuse, health, anxiety, sexuality, grief, addiction and various mental health issues.

I tend to agree with everything you have just said. I think a suit is a good choice for an interview as long as the fit is right. Nothing worse than if it is either too tight or too big. Generally as long as you look smart and appear to have taken a bit of trouble over your appearance it gives a good first impression. I would like your opinion on whether socks should be worn at all times with shoes. Personally I find it a bit off putting if a man doesn't wear socks with leather shoes. OK with trainers. What about patterned socks or should socks always be self coloured to match the colour of the trousers. Best wishes from the UK where most men do not wear pocket squares.

I've always been raised to open the door for people, my grandpa really wanted me to understand being what he considered a gentleman and that was being helpful to people and one way I do that is by holding open doors for people..especially if they have a full armload of food at a take out joint or it's a building that doesn't have automatic doors. I also help people in the grocery store try to find what they are looking for if it's very obvious they don't know where it is and I happen to know, or help them reach something they can't if they are a little short or their arms aren't as long as mine. It's just something I was raised to do and I do it on automatic now. I haven't run into one of the raving feminist that hast a fit when a man opens the door for her..maybe it's cause of the area I live in, I live both in the south and an area where there are a lot of older folks who passed on the same kinda thing my grandpa did.

When I was about eighteen years old, I opened the door for a woman who was approaching it. She may have been about thirty years old. I think all these tips are spot on, except for wearing a hat indoors - its a traditional sign of respect to take your hat off indoors. Alot of guys commented with regards to etiquette with women, I basically want to project to the world that I'm well bred & have a little class.
@IamChevalier2 жыл бұрын
Good for you... I was raised the same way. One always removes their hat when addressing a lady and removes it when in doors. I would get a more than subtle 'nudge' in the ribs from my Father, Uncle or Grandfather if I didn't remove my hat for either situation - trust me, you didn't forget again. Same for holding a door - I sometimes get the odd comment from the latest feminist oddball - Just ignore and say "You're Welcome anyway" loud enough to embarrass the hell out of them - I always get an approving nod or glance from bystanders (male & female). Reminds me of the scene in "Cahill, US Marshall" - when John Wayne's 'son' refused to tip his hat to a lady - Wayne basically backhanded him off his horse - saying "Pardon Ma'am, a slight oversight in his upbringing..." Am old school - sometimes modern 'ways' are not the best ways. It's the little things - that we simply ignore or let go - that snowballs into bigger indiscretions. Off my soap box 🙂

It does matter; at a proper table, if you can put your elbows on the table, you are too far forward, making your posture seem to your guest a little invasive. It also brings your hands either to the center of the table, or around your face.

A man should put himself between danger and others (woman, child, elderly, etc.) E.g. The most common use is placing yourself between traffic (auto, trains, etc.) and others. - Note - Some males don't see themselves as Defenders and it shows.

One time in a large office with many employees, while approaching a closed door, I let a woman behind me pass first, she didn’t say thank you, smile or nod her head. It felt like I was slapped in the back of the head. This woman was gorgeous and knew all the men in the office talked about her. A few weeks later, guess who was behind me as I approached the door? It felt amazing entering first and watching the door close behind me.

There's a right way and a wrong way to put your elbows on the table. If you look like you're trying to protect your plate or you're hunched over your plate trying to shovel as much food as you can that's the wrong way. A casual elbow on the table well you take a listening pose that's okay. Elbows on the table with your head in your hands and crying into your salad... not okay.
