I really agree. Some sunscreens are horrible with reapplication. Some of the tinted ones really get very heavy fake looking ( Kiehl's mineral sunscreen), the mineral untinted ones can get ghost white ( skinceuticals sheer mineral 50, ultrasun mineral) or extremely oily ( coppertone pure and simple, mineral fusion spf 40 ) but the most annoying ones in my opinion are the ones that just rub the first layer off or start peeling off ( theinkeylist, bare republic mineral 70, ultrasun mineral 50)

I’ve been wearing sunscreen since 1974. Back then, I only reapplied once a day, bc I didn’t know any better. But worse, sunscreens had low SPFs and were NOT broad spectrum, the only protected against UVB. My current derm says they were a complete waste of money and time until about 2005, when reliable, broad spectrum sunscreens came about. I always applied my sunscreen very thickly, however: two finger-lengths for the face, one for the neck, two finger-lengths for the chest, three for each arm! Now I reapply every 2-2≥5 hours, but previously I only reapplied at lunch😢

I think the very low SPF tanning products aren’t broad spectrum. They’re not much of anything, except extremely bad. I know in Australia, if an SPF is above a certain number (15, I think?) then by law it is to be broad spectrum to meet regulations. And Aussie sunscreen regulations are quite strict. I find Aussie sunscreens to be the best workhorses for days out (not surprising given our extreme UV and our lifestyle), but Asian sunscreens are the nicest on the face.

How do you re-aply sunscreen over make up if you put you make up on in the morning and wear it all day?
@Suzanne44153 жыл бұрын
Just get a really good water resistent one and apply very well to begin with. If you're outside for several hours on a high uv index day, sweating etc, it's a good idea to skip foundation so you can reapply properly. But if you feel you need a base product in that situation and you're lucky enough to be of a certain - light - color - I find the Australian Gold tinted spf 50 really good as a light coverage foundation. I don't really trust it as spf on its own cuz it only has 4% zinc oxide as UVA filter, but it's very very tenacious, and it mattes down greasy spf finishes nicely and reapplies fine (as long as you're not very dry/flaky). There are other tinted spf products, some of them with a bit more of a shade range, and some of them (the Heliocare) with excellent UV filters. It's impossible however to apply enough of any tinted product to get full spf, so I always prep with a good spf if I'm gonna get some serious UV exposure. (Every 2 hrs really is overkill in many circumstances tbh - it's for the beach, hiking etc - depending on your sunscreen. In Sweden I use one - Evy - that's tested with 20 minute baths repeated over 8 hours and still retains its SPF, I'm sure there are US ones that are as reliable.)

@@chrisgmay16 According to Dr. Shah of "Doctorly," the answer is actually closer to 1/4 teaspoon (1.31ml, or two finger lengths) for face, neck, and ears. That might actually be achievable lol. Especially considering that there are six US teaspoons to one US fluid ounce - which means the recommended three daily applications to the face and neck (at two teaspoons per application) would constitute a usage rate of one ounce per day! I can't think of any product that would be affordable under those conditions. Yikes!

I discovered another one recently, fragrance! When I apply fragrance at home, I always put it on before sunscreen. But recently was testing Chanel Eau de Cologne at a boutique and sprayed it on my neck without thinking. The next day I had a big ole sunburn blotch in the shape of a where I had sprayed. The fact that it is a citrus fragrance made it even worse. Lesson learned, be careful when testing fragrances at the store to keep it off sun exposed skin or re-apply sunscreen after you spray!

Yes, perfume in general can be very troublesome. I stopped spraying any perfumed products on my skin in fear of irritation. Now i only put perfume on my clothes. Oh, and also don't put it on your hair! While alcohol in perfume can't sunburn your hair, it still can damage and dry it out.

Hi Dr.Dray! I've been wondering about fruit extract in sunscreen, since I have figured that I'm allergic to stone fruits, I did not realize it at first tho until there was skin rash all over my body every time I eat cherries/plums/apricots/peaches, will the fruit extract (i.e peach extract in make prem sun calming tone up) give me such reaction too?, I'm thinking could be best to avoid it anyway but I'd like to hear your opinion about this. thank you so much!

My question is: when you go to reapply the second time , third time etc., do you reapply the same 2 tablespoon amount? Because I use the cotz face prime & protect tinted spf and that gets so thick that at the end of the day, it’s so hard to remove even when I double cleanse. I end up double cleansing twice because of how thick it is.

Doing it like this I don’t get it because i go through entire bottles every single week- I don’t know how to do it!
@ArtsyBaker243 жыл бұрын
You should be reapplying that same amount yes. But i have a couple sunscreens I can reapply tons of times throughout the day with no issues! I like LA Roche posay and biore. But sun bum has some good ones
@lavellans3 жыл бұрын
Can you try wiping it off with a baby wipe before you reapply?
@sara_3873 жыл бұрын
@@lavellans If you can tolerate it, leaving on the previous layer is the best idea from a sun protection point of view. Application is never 100% and with a few layers you are less likely to have gaps. People often don’t apply enough either, so with a few layers you have a better chance of being closer to the stated SPF on the bottle.

Hi Dr. Dray. I wonder how do I know if my sunscreen is working? I don’t know if it is because I have Asian skin ( but I’m a type iv fitzgerald skin type). 🥺 Ps. I do generously apply sunscreen everyday and because I don’t go out and literally not exposed to sunlight, I re-apply even indoors.

Sounds like UVA rays are more dangerous than UVB because we would know that our SPF sunscreen is not working if we get a tan or burn. How do we know if that we are well protected against UVA rays?

I use an spf 55 chemical sun stick. I cover all of the skin on my face and neck with it. Does the 2 tablespoons rule apply to sun sticks? How do I make sure that I apply enough sunscreen with a sun stick?

Do it every single time you contact sun plus wearing hat and glasses. Why? It's not because of not getting tan, it's because of skin lines and wrinkles. Do it as I said and in long term you'll look younger.

I will have to get better at reapplying, though I was doing it, but I will make sure I do reapply more often (more than once), especially in summer, when I go rollerskating for hours and sweat like crazy. Though I do get up between 4 and 5 am for that because I do not want to skate for hours in the summer sun so I am done before 9am (or I go skating later after the sun has set). I currently have spf 50 but will buy higher SPF to use on those days.

This reminds me of the worst place I ever got a sunburn. The part of my hair right on my scalp. I don't burn easily and I was also wearing sunscreen, but I didn't think about my head! I didn't even realize I got a sunburn until I went to wash the sand off of my hair.

With all these limitations of sunscreens, one should find an alternate to them: A hat with a 50 SPF rating with a wrap-around cover for the neck and lower face. With it, I never suffer from sunburn like I used to with sunscreen. But you might want to take vitamin D if you use it.

A derm recently posted on his Instagram page recommending a 7 days "skin detox" from retinol, make up and SUNSCREEN for people with sensitive skin. Is this something that you would recommend to do? The thought of taking a break from sunscreen gives me anxiety...

Dr. Dray does not believe in “detoxes”. I would assume she does not recommend taking breaks from sunscreen.

Did you really say 2 teaspoons for the face and neck or did I misunderstand? I've always been told the proper amount to get 2mg/cm squared was 1/4 tsp for the face and neck. 2 teaspoons for just the face and neck would be roughly 1/3 of the 1oz for the entire body. That seems like it would be an overapplication on the face/neck, and leave you with not enough for the rest of your body.
