As an Australian, I grew up with some truly terrifying ads by the Cancer Council about melanoma. Growing up, we lived by the 'Slip, Slop, Slap' mantra: Slip on a long-sleeve shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap on a hat. It's amazing how much that stuff sticks with you.

@@BlueBlossomsBlues Well, no. The Cancer Council doesn't recall sunscreen, the Therapeutic Goods Administration does and Australian safety regulations are EXTREMELY stringent. Benzene is not an ingredient in sunscreen but can be a contaminant in raw materials used in the manufacturing process. The products were recalled out of an abundance of caution. Per the TGA: "Exposure at the levels detected would not be expected to cause serious adverse health effects, and risks to users are considered low".

I feel like culture / habit is also a factor. I grew up in an Asian country and when we go to the beach, we go early morning, go back indoors or seek shade before 11am, have lunch, chat, maybe sleep, then go back out again when the sun is down. When I moved to the US, it’s the opposite. I see a lot of Caucasian Americans go out at 10-11am until 3/4pm. They reapply sunscreens, sure, but they are exposed in the sun longer under stronger UV index. We usually just apply sunscreens once or twice, but we try to avoid the sun at its peak.

I'm not even actively searching for shade--I just feel better when the sun isn't beating down on me. I don't think I'm weird in that regard. They get angry at me for the (honestly minimal) protections I take. Hell, I got a talking to from my manager one day last summer because I didn't show proper appreciation that the assistant manager did the inside work and left the outside work for me to do. I was "overreacting" by mildly expressing concern for how long I was going to have to be out in the sun without sleeves, sunscreen, or a hat when I wasn't expecting to work outside at all that day. Thankfully we have consumer reports that test which sunscreens do and dont work, and regulations are coming soon. The Exuviance peel pads and retinol pads helped a bit in my 30s and doing my best in layering my face with SPF, there's been significant improvement fortunately. Pretty tough to do with a cottage on the beach and monitoring 5 kids throughout the years. I stick out like a sore thumb because I look like a ghost compared to my 8 siblings, especially now that I have almost no pigment left. One plus is that my skin at 68 looks really good. Hi, I have a few questions about sunscreens. Some sunscreens are marketed for wet skin ("can be applied on wet skin"). Is it only a marketing argument (and any sunscreen can be applied to wet skin and be effective) or do you really need a specific formulation for sunscreen to work when applied on wet skin or with wet hands? The ㏗ of most sunscreens seems unknown even though we are supposed to apply and reapply sunscreen everyday and that a ㏗ matching the skin is better to maintain a "healthy" and good looking skin. I guess formulating a sunscreen is already difficult enough so brands don't necedsarly focus on the ㏗ to match the skin, especially if some of the active ingredients actually require a ㏗ that does not match the skin to be effective which might be possible right? Have you tried to determine the ㏗ of a sunscreen? If so what did you find? Do you know the ㏗ that some of the most common UV filters require to be effective? Do you know some brands that communicate about the ㏗ of their sunscreens? Obviously it isnt the most important thing but I am curious. Thanks in advance.
@moisdawg2 жыл бұрын
all sunscreens are formulated so that they form that protective film on the surface of the skin, and putting them on wet skin is going to interrupt that process. I've never heard of a wet skin sunscreen and frankly I would avoid any that claim to be that way. Along the same vein, I'd assume the pH of sunscreens must be around the same pH of the skin if they are meant to sit on top of the skin.

Thank you very much. I’m 72 and am outside a lot frequently canoe paddling (all year long). I always wear long sleeve shirts, long pants, neck scarf, broad hat, socks, and gloves. I’ve also been using H&B 50 SPF that contains zinc and titanium (makes my skin white). It’s hard to rub off. In fact I have to scrub the skin with a wash cloth to remove it which is good. My white skin and wearing socks with slippers doesn’t bother me but seems disturbing to others and some of them make comments, suggestions and jokes. What is disturbing to me is that a lot of people have no clue what I’m dealing with. And some even say that the chemicals in sunscreens are harmful and proudly show off their sun burns and tans. Also in Hawaii on the beaches people still expose most of their skin to the Sun’s harmful rays. And I see so many young people there that have severely damaged skin that makes them look decades older than they are. Good health!

One question I've always had: How do clouds impact UV rays? I know I feel like I'm getting less sun exposure on overcast days, but is that true? Is there any difference in UV A and B penetration through cloud cover? Thank you!
@Momofukudoodoowindu2 жыл бұрын
You have to look at clouds as an inconsistent unpredictable sheet of light refraction. It bounces off light and sends it back into the higher atmosphere - or can bounce them off sideways/downwards at randomized angles in a cyclical fashion towards xyz, including people. Light rays ultimately still gets thru.

Tanning is a natural defense of the body against burn damage because of the production of melanine. Although, it's not perfect since our body does what it can and that's why we also need spf to be protected, but not every tan is skin injury. I constantly heard “oh you’re so white you need to get a tan” or “if you’re wearing white clothes get a tan”, etc etc. Also people that I know would wait for the summer to tan first and then wear their shorts or keep applying those bronzing neutrogena creams and lotions. I love all these people who say “If only I had known…” The cancer connection to too much sun might not have been known, but we did know about the accelerated aging effect of getting dark tans. People just didn’t want to hear about it, because “being tan” was king. I am 71 years old, and my mother taught me when I was 14 or 15 years old to protect my skin from the sun, because too much sun is very aging. She said to cover my face with a towel, if I was going to lay out to get a tan on my body, because we didn’t have sunscreens back then, we had tanning oils. I also remember when I was 16, I saw these young women at the pool, who were in their early 20s, holding these large aluminum semi-circular fans under their chins to increase the reflection of sunlight onto their faces to increase their tans. I tried to tell them dark tans would accelerate the aging on their faces that would begin to be noticeable once they hit their late 20s or early 30s. BUT, they told me I was nuts and ridiculed me. Interestingly, in my early 30s when I met my husband, we had the same conversation I’d had with the girls at the pool. He said he’d already noticed at his 10 year high school reunion the “in girls” in high school with the great tans had much aged worse than the girls who did not appear to be sun worshipers.

Also, The UV-Rays that cause burning are not the ones that cause tanning,which means that tanning and burning do not correlate.That means, if you didn’t burn,maybe UVB didn’t hit you that hard ,but if you tan, you still got UVA damage (that can cause skin cancer as well)

A lot of influencers will casually say that a certain foundation colour will suit them better in summer when their skin is darker. I always cringe, thinking, your skin shouldn't be getting darker in summer. Another common thing l see is people very proudly saying they are bringing the sunscreen down onto their neck, then they completely forget the chest. When you look at ageing women's chests you see that's where much of the crepiness and mottling takes place. The chest, people!
