Finally. A profesional painter who made a video geared towards a homeowner or an newbie. All these other guys are posting clips where they are using 18 inch rollers over floors covered with rosin paper or chip board. In been a painter for 36 years. The steps you described along with the tools you recommend are perfect. Well-done

From personal experience I would add four more pieces of advice: 1. Always have the client move their furniture. One client accused me of damaging a display-cabinet's contents and I never ever moved another piece of furniture for any client again. If they don't like that, you don't need that job. 2. Have the client buy and deliver the paint. There can be no discussion about "That's not the color I wanted." 3. Video every square foot of the job before and after so there can never be any discussion about the job quality. 4. Always and I mean always get the job-description and particulars in writing, signed and dated by the client. Absolutely get any change-orders written, signed and dated. Believe me, some clients have bad memories but some actually are out to screw any and all contractors. They think you charge too much so they want something for free. My last big client was dealing with dozens of properties and in his old-age couldn't remember what he told me day to day. He was a good guy but he was failing mentally. Having everything in writing saved me a lot of arguing. Painting, as presented in this presentation is a simple and pleasant occupation. Preparation is absolute key and taking your time is equally important. Never rush.

I am so ready to take this on! I am 62 and I just recently decided to give all my rooms a budget friendly makeover and update my house. And now, I definitely want to paint the rooms first before I start decorating! I had beck surgery quite a few years ago, but it left me with a very sore neck, so I will be a little slower at painting, but I will do it! Thank you for motivating me, really you have no idea how much you have motivated me! Thank you, thank you! Debbie

Pro tip: put the screws from the outlet/switch plates back into the holes. Saves you tons of time trying to figure out the size of the screws and you’ll never misplace a screw again. Sometimes the different plates have different size screws.

Great overview of interior painting! I started watching all of your videos a few months ago and I'm now painting almost as good as a pro! My house is about halfway done (started in the finished basement) and prep time always takes the longest. Since I'm also painting the ceilings (same color), removing everything from the room is mandatory so adds a lot ot prep time but definitely worth the trouble. Using the 4" roller for cutting the corners is SO smart and also looks great. Keep up the great channel....and don't forget to put in God's Word! 1 Peter 3:15
@thunderpooch
@thunderpooch 4 жыл бұрын
You're painting the ceiling the same color? That's ok, but maybe I can provide some info why that's not typically done. There's psychoacoustics, and there's another field known as psychovisuals. The idea is to work with your human brain, and how it perceives color and distance/depth, and not against it. The reason ceilings are typically painted white is that it "lifts the ceiling." The diffracted light makes it hard to notice where excactly the ceiling begins, so essentially you don't notice the exact height your ceiling is at. And for most people and our modest homes and rooms, ceilings are pretty darn low. Painting the ceiling a darker color than white or an off white makes the ceiling appear low and ominous. You'll tend to notice there's a "big cover" just above you. Noticing the exact height of your ceiling adds a feeling of claustrophobia. Rooms start to look like tunnels and caves. Most don't like this. In a few rooms it can be great for a change of pace (kids' play rooms or spare room to watch tv/play video games) , but not for your entire house. If your ceiling height is extremely tall, then you will want to consider the reverse techniques. Use a darker color, or perhaps install darkened beams (typically wood) to "bring the ceiling down." It makes rooms with huge vaulted ceilings or ceilings above 12 feet in height a touch cozier. Hope that helps. :)

You're my go-to guy on anything about painting. I have watched many videos over many years. And I've learned quite a bit. But, I always patch walls before I do anything else. That way it's dry and ready when everything else is done and the room is ready for painting. Also, I don't allow anyone to open a can of paint before they have a clean, wet, white rag. That way if there are any mishaps, Then you have a wet rag in a second. So as to not allow any spills, drips, or anything to have time to start drying. Also, I always wet my brushes then slap out the excess water. This way they clean up easier. Keep up the great videos I study them a lot.

Now I've decided I just want to paint the entire house white (the walls are currently beige), but I don't have the money right now to hire someone to do it, so I'm curious what you would charge. If your using lighter coloured paint on darker painted surfaces you'll need at least 3 coats. I'd recommend using 2 coats of a cheap white mat paint as a base colour, then let it dry and then use two coats of your chosen colour.

Great process video, thanks! Need advice for OLD SMOKE ODOR LEAKING THROUGH 1.5 YR OLD PAINT JOB - We bought a duplex 2 years ago and live in one side. Got the interior painted before moving in, and after 1.5 years during a very humid fall the place is getting worse week by week and we are both noticing health effects from third hand smoke. The air purifier's filter is even getting blackened from it, and the walls and clothes hanging in closets smell like cigarettes. We're looking at repainting the whole interior ourselves but *really* want to make sure we're doing it right. What products to use? The first job was bargain basement and he used crappy primer, crappy ceiling paint, and decent wall enamel. Will Kilz water based primer be enough, or are there other odor sealing layers necessary? Thanks for everything, your channel is now my go-to for painting!

Cutting in afterwards only works when you use flat and some products in satin, if you use semi or gloss it will flash. Darker colors need at least 2 coats of cut in and will flash if you don't cut in one wall at a time and roll out(same with semi gloss and gloss). Basically this technique only works with lighter neutral colors that are flat or in certain products satin.

Hello from Canada! I love watching your tips and tricks! I have a question! The previous owners of our house had wall decals and stickers on some of the walls in our new house. Unfortunately when they moved they peeled off the decals and stickers and left behind a mess, some peeling off paint and the top layer of drywall, while others left behind the whole back of the sticker and all the sticky residue. I have purchased a product to help break down this sticky residue, and a lot of elbows grease later the walls look, well Okay-ish 🙄. So here is my question....what can I use to wash away this oily mess the crud cutter product left behind before I paint?

Also they don't use ladders because for higher ceiling ladder may not be able to reach, like pent House or 2 storey bungalow. They use up to 4 x elongated aluminium pole, and you don't rolled and cut in. This is a mistake most professionals do. You cut in first then roll as the thickness of paint on roller and brush is different. After rolling then cut, you might see the lines of the brush.

I’ve been a professional decorator for over 10 years and have never, ever come across anyone roll before cutting in and especially not double coat the walls but only cut in with one coat. Confusing but interesting to see how other do their thing. If it works for you then great but I’ll stick to cutting in, roll, cut in, roll.

I do the same in the video. Reason being 1. cutting in once usually equates to rolling twice, as in regarding paint coverage. 2. It saves time doing this method and then touching up in needed areas afterwards.

Don’t cut in afterwards for touch ups . Cut in twice (both coats)otherwise you will get obvious flashing around light switches corners ect. Your having to cut in twice anyway so your not saving time just lowering the quality of the Finnish

THANKS FOR THE GREAT VIDEOS!!! cut in AFTER rolling?! Everywhere else I've seen say do cut in first. The roller goes into / over the brush marks for a more consistent look? You do say to cut in 1x when possible, So the 2nd roller coat will wind up covering the brush marks I guess.
