I love how this was 1999 and yet they not only made the “crazy feminist chick” the MAIN character, but they didn’t caricature her or demonize her or relegate her to being the goofy best friend character. It was so formative to me that they let a character like Kat take center stage and not be painted as the bad guy
@jimerodriguez8332
@jimerodriguez8332 3 жыл бұрын
This is Shakespeare "The taming of a shrew" with a modern twist ,and you are right! They could easily make her quit her ideas or taste in music for him ,and he is "a bad boy" but we still perceive that the characters grow and have depth in them.
@torfinnzempel6123
@torfinnzempel6123 3 жыл бұрын
I would add too that this movie is an example of how you can do a feminist movie correctly. So many movies today that try to be feminist end up just hitting you over the head with a few feminist ideas, with out ever letting you actually explore them, or reach those ideas through context, and it results in people just dismissing the movie. 10 Things I Hate About You plays it correctly by utilizing the concept of "Show don't tell" rather than the concept of "See hammer hit nail"

Fun Fact : Her crying while reading the poem wasn't scripted, that was her own emotion from personal issues, so the way he looked at her was a real reaction. It makes this scene so much stronger and more emotional knowing that that cry was real and deep.

Yeah, plus you can see that's just how Kat is, she's weird/alternate and passionate about her beliefs and you can see that well by her character. I liked how Kat being feminist and pro-women is linked to how the guy who ''liked'' Bianca (I forgot his name). He treated Kat badly and she doesn't want that to happen to her sister, she just wants to protect herself & Bianca. She genuinely cares about others even though she has a tough personality if you break through you get to see she's caring. She's a multi-dimensional character.

Another fun fact: the two female writers had a meeting with heath at a coffee shop and stayed until closing then went back to 1 of their apartments and ended up talking the entire night. It's because you can tell that whatever she did and however she dressed she was doing for herself and her enjoyment...NOT to please men and put down others. I feel like women are judged no matter what "type" of girl they are.

This movie was good at many things and particularly at doing the badboy trope. The thing many authors don't understand about the badboy trope is that you can't have the boy be an actual asshole because then it makes it impossible to root for him. This movie solves the issue by making him have the reputation but actually be a normal and caring guy. Very good job, love to see it.
