I had one of those, even with a piece of cardboard directly on the front of the radiator in the 10°F weather we get quite often in Pennsylvania that thing just wouldn't make heat, in temps that cold you could have drained the coolant and removed the radiator and drove that thing all over the place in those temps and the engine still wouldn't have gotten up to a real operating temperature, that thing was colder in the winter than an old VW Bug with rotted out heat risers, you had to dress warm in that thing.

@@CarStarz42 I bought that thing in the early fall when there was still leaves on the trees, come winter when it really got cold, and we had a cold one that year, the heater wouldn't make enough heat to defrost the windshield, so I put a thermostat in it thinking it was bad, didn't change a thing, put another one in that was the hottest one I could get, still no heat, then I put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator which wasn't any bigger than a large coffee table book, it looked like it could have been a heater core from the back of an ambulance, still nothing, then I took thing's apart so I could get the cardboard right up against the front of the radiator, still nothing, so I put cardboard directly on the front and back of the radiator, not one bit of difference. I doubt the thermostat was ever even opening, that little all aluminum 3 cylinder engine apparently was bleeding all it's heat out through the block and head, I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that I could have drained all the coolant out of it and removed the radiator and it still wouldn't have heated up fully to it's operating temperature, it only had an idiot light with no guage but if it did I'll bet if the air temperature was anywhere around 15 to 20°F or lower it would have stayed on C. With a decent set of snow tires on the front of that thing and it'd go anywhere, it was like an Army Jeep, and about as cold as one to.

Chrysler first generation turbo 2.2 introduced in 1984 was called the Turbo I and made 142 HP, it had a mechanical wastegate, in 1985 a computer controlled wastegate was added upping it to 146 HP. The next one called the Turbo II introduced in 1986 added an inner cooler and made 176 HP. The Turbo III introduced in 1991 had a Lotus designed 16V head and made 224 HP. There were several other versions of their turbo 2.2 engine's like the Turbo IV that had variable nozzle technology but were installed on very few cars. In an interview with Carroll Shelby he said that working with the Chrysler racing team for their factory race cars they were getting 700+ HP out of the 2.2 engine, that's not bad for an engine that stock in my mother's 1981 K-Car you had to shut off the air conditioning to keep it from dropping under 45 MPH going up the mountain behind our house.

He came over to visit one day out of the blue with this exact same car “or close to it“. I do you remember that the car would talk, whatever computer it had it would talk as it did certain things or functions. He said he won the car in a bet and he really liked it. My grandpa told me he was the type of person that would hype up anything that he owned even if it was garbage. Where he then painted it that same pea soup green and he even burnt the top off and dressed up like John Candy in the film.

In 1998 I bought a 1988ish tan Town and Country Chrysler (a bland Lebaron mini station wagon) from a dealer for $800. He had it advertised at $1900 but when I said no it's too ugly, he said is it ugly at $900... I said I have $800 in my pocket...out the door. He said deal....as we were writing up the contract, he said he'd had it a year and EVERYONE said it was ugly. So he was ready to dump it for cost. Same car in th background at the dealer in Family Vacation. The trim around the plastic wood panel had faded to splotchy pink. I bought a pint of tan paint and a brush to recover the trim frame. Looked new. Really good leather seats. Spunky pep. When I brought it home I thought my wife would be upset. She said "I LOVE IT!". She was quirky artsy young wife. We drove 4 years it till 110,000 miles when the turbo blew. Good buy.

Some of that movie was filmed right by where I live, most the driving scenes where there is snow on the ground, and when the train broke down, The train station is in south Daytona ny . And the highway scenes were north Boston ny on “the 219” between rice hill rd and Genesee rd exits , when they were going the wrong way and when the cop pulled them over , I saw them filming a scene that never made the movie , it was snowing pretty heavy and they had the car kinda far off the road down in the ditch, like they stuffed it in there at 75 MPH . A few camera men were at the front of the car filming what argument is going on. They had a car carrier/ auto transport with four of the green Chryslers and a dark blue cop car , plus the car in the ditch , I think this happened November 1986

You dont have to go see it. I didnt notice it when watching the movie. I saw it in an easter egg video on youtube!

I like to think that the Gran-Detroit brand is owned by the same company behind the Wagon Queen brand, explaining their similar attributes.

So I watched the replica car sell at Barrett-Jackson and got up close to it at the gala (I was a bidder, not on this car but still) and there was actually a FATAL flaw in the paintjob. The trunk said Del O Griffith (correct). The door said Del O Griffin (incorrect).

Hmm, odd. Yeah looked like it was missing some emblems too; could have been better, but then again; could of been worse too😉

Thanks for the video. Just watched the movie (again). All-time classic. How about next 10x facts about the Ambulance (1978 Dodge Tradesman) from Cannonball Run (1981) or David Carradine's Trans Am from Cannonball (1976). Or of course Rubber Ducks Mack Truck from Convoy (1978)?

Yeah, someone else on here mentioned that awhile back, I still haven't seen any new movies from this year, been to busy, but I hear that was a good film anyway.

'Heyy could be worse if car caught on fire like right now 😂😂' ohhh how funny this movie has two guys traveling together in convertible through winter time (p.s. not recommended choice if you're desperate to make it home) as series comically miss steps keep our buddies busy with there fruitless efforts in making it home for thanksgiving isn't easy trip to do even nowadays so thank you carstarz for uploading a classic comedy buddy movie and have happy thanksgiving to you bye now.

Lol, true; at least it was indeed a slow starting fire and thanks😉👍

Car companies are funny about how their products are used on screen. Andy Griffith is a good example, the run of the Andy Griffith Show he had a deal with Ford, the good guys always were seen driving Ford products and the bad guys all others notably import cars of the day. Was revisited during the Matlock run where his team were always driving Fords old and new and the bad guys often appeared driving GM products.

Does a scale diecast or model version of this car exist? (I see you answered this in the video, thanks!) I’d buy a diecast version of the burnt out car!!

That would be cool; hopefully we'll see some diecast releases in the future😉👍

I never knew this car was customized. I personally found the Lebaron to be an ugly crappy car. I just thought the movie cars were shown as is. Now that I see the "Family Truckster" influence, I can't unsee it. Thanks for posting.

Brilliant! If you could find your way to doing a mini-episode on "Dooby's / Doobie's Taxiola" (which I *think* is a Bonneville Sedan) I'd be very grateful :)
