Something I feel should be reiterated is that Luffy DELIBERATELY chose not to listen to Nojiko tell Nami's story. He didn't care about the struggle she's been through. Luffy decided to help her solely because no matter what you've done before, if you're with him, you're with him for life. "You made our navigator cry" was more than enough reason to put his life on the line for her.

@@quintondorsey7362 Selfish is a good definition to describe Luffy's personality, just, not with the connotations that we typically associate with it (cruel, manipulative etc). He is overwhelmingly honest, and whilst the early parts of the series emphasize this playfully, Oda isn't afraid to show that Luffy is a man who would have left Zoro to perish from his wounds from Hawkeye, if Zoro hadn't lifted his sword to vow he'd never lose again. He'd leave Nami here if he believed her lies, he even does leave Usopp when he and the ship are no longer fit to serve the goal of becoming Pirate king. He doesn't do it out of a lack of empathy, but out of a sense of plain - not cold, just honest - pragmatism; if you're with him, it means you're useful to him, and he will bleed every bit of blood needed to keep you with him. Selfishness is a trait of any legendary leader, doubly so for one whose goal is to rule the roost of one of the more deceptively dark world's in Shonen.

A shipwright told Luffy that it is impossible to repair the ship + he and his crew could drown on high see because it was practically impossible to reach the next island with the GoingMarry in that condition. Ussopp explained himself when he left the crew (in comparison: Nami, Robin and Sanji had no prior conversation with Luffy before 'leaving', so he wanted to talk to them - he sensed it was not from their own free will).

The cartography room represents Nami's future, her life "mapped out" to serve Arlong for the rest of her life. By destroying the room, Luffy symbolically releases her from her dreaded plans as well as her entire identity as Arlong's navigator in favor for claiming her as his own navigator. The map room is EVERYTHING

As a counterpoint to the "saving the village vs destroying the map room" argument, I think it helps the reader identify more with Luffy who also doesn't feel a personal connection to the map room, but recognizes that it is the symbol of Nami's slavery and oppression under Arlong, so it must be destroyed. That's all that matters: helping his crew, not having a heroic or stereotypical rescue-the-town situation. In that sense, I still think the map room route works a lot better and in a subtle way distinguishes One Piece from other shonen manga. E: also, without spoiling anything specifically, the villagers not being directly involved is kind of a theme in One Piece ie the Straw Hats are like a tornado that blow through each town or place they travel through, upsetting the existing order and leaving it profoundly changed going forward. E2: it's also why Luffy is often sleeping or picking his nose whenever someone is giving their tragic backstory - you don't need to justify yourself to get Luffy's help. If you're a friend in need, he picks up on that and helps you, which speaks a lot to his character and another reason why the detached feeling of the map room also works better than directly saving the village. Luffy may not be the most intellectual person, but he's actually very emotionally intelligent and picks up on the feelings of others without needing to be told outright.

thank you for this. i agree with everything in the video except for the critique about the map room. because honestly i find the figth between luffy and arlong is still one of the top 3 fights in one piece. (personal opinion). but i applaud oda for using arlongs launch out of the water and luffys ability to catapult himself, and have them fight inside of the building, where the other characters don't see them. it opens the opportunity for the dialogue in the map room, a little brake in the fight and a switch of action. and after explaining how much sorrow this room has brought nami we get this absolute beauty of a panel where luffy throws her desk out of the wall. the people outside the building don't see what's happening inside. nobody understands what's going on - nobody, except for nami! she sees this and is the only one that immediately understands that luffy is doing this for her, to free her from that tragic past. and her tears and quiet "thank you" let us know that without a doubt she understands what luffy is doing and how grateful and reliefed she is. i doubt that escalating the fight more and taking it into the town and having there be damage to the village would have made for a better scenario. after all it would feel more cliche, since often times a big fight between a hero and villain just creates destruction that other people have to deal with. containing the damage to the arlong parc and taking down arlong with his seat of power is absolutely satisfying and feels way more rewarding than saving the town from destruction. and yes, arlong parc is my absolute favorite arc in one piece. i care about it deeply.
@ChaosSepher4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting into this. Pretty much summarizes my feelings on the subject. Do love it as Luffy made a point to not listen to Nami's story because he didn't need to hear it. All he he knew was Nami cried and asked for help, and that is all he needed. But when he saw that room, that blood stained quill, and Arlong talking about *using* Nami, he knew what needed to be done. And I find it just incredibly cathartic just how Luffy goes ape on that damned room and the charts, especially with how much it pissed off Arlong As for your E: Yeah I pretty much consider the Straw Hats harbingers of Chaos for those reasons.

The thing about Nami's eventual "Luffy, help me" that gets me every time is how it is reinforced that Nami usually never asks for help. I believe it was her sister that said that she never asked for help in her entire life. And for that person to ask for help NOW of all moments... Such a great scene, literally and emotionally! We have all been at a point where we needed help but didn't want it. I remember this scene was one of the things that was on my mind when I eventually asked for help when I needed it, but thought I didn't. So, I'm not 100% sure on this, but regarding the Nami's room scene: The way the manga and anime portray the whole situation are radically different from each other. The manga sort of glosses over a lot of it, but the anime spends a good portion of time showing Nami drawing sea charts to the point of her fingers blistering and bleeding constantly. as well as a time-lapse of just how long she spent drawing thousands upon thousands of them as they pile up inside the room - from nothing there, to charts stacked to the ceiling. I don't really remember if the manga had this scene, it might be anime-original. And in that case, you _definitely_ were not going to get the full impact of the destruction of the room and Nami's reaction. It was her prison and her torture chamber. If someone destroyed a place that essentially gave you PTSD, you would fall to the ground weeping in gratitude. That's the impact of the destruction of the sea chart room. And I feel very sad that you didn't get the full effect. Again, I may be completely wrong, but the way you talk about it makes it seem as if the anime absolutely added a lot to that aspect of Nami's story in order to make the destruction of the room have more impact.
@mldag16784 жыл бұрын
you are definetly not in the wrong as I think a lot of people (inculding me) would agree, (I'm was also an anime-only until the Wano arc when I started reading the manga bc I just had to continue the story and I don't have patience enough to wait for new episodes altough I still watch them when they come out)

I feel like you've missed the point of Luffy destroying the room, and your suggestion, in my opinion, would feel weak, specifically because the villagers had already resolved to die, and also a shift to the village from the park would be jarring. Luffy was not personally invested in the village. His connection was solely to Nami, and the reason he destroyed the room was because Arlong explained to him what he made her do there. Luffy didn't know Nami's whole connection to the village because he skimped out on the explanations. It's important to note (for future reading also) that sometimes what we know is not what all the characters know, and sometimes the characters know more than we do. Luffy knew she was in distress, but he didn't know why, he was just waiting for her to ask for help instead of trying to shoulder the burden on her own. The main point of Luffy destroying the room was the symbolic meaning. The first thing is that it was symbolic of Luffy freeing Nami of Arlong's slavery, as that is where she spent her time with Arlong, so it has a very (negative) personal connection. Destroying the room is destroying her "use" to Arlong. The second, and less apparent point, is Luffy actively choosing to destroy the room instead of trying hit Arlong. He's using his energy not to stop Arlong, but to mentally liberate Nami, and show that he understands what is shackling her, and destroying those shackles. We also do get to see how Nami is connected to the room in that moment, so while it doesn't have build-up, we still have a strong connection, as we see how she was abused and made to work. I also feel that this puts more agency on Luffy instead of Luffy reacting to Arlong being dangerous and reactively saving Nami, he is proactively doing it. He's not trying to be a hero for the village, he's trying to help his friend. He's freeing her, not them. It's just that by extension of his actions, the village is also free. Arlong was already going on a rampage in his own base, I don't think him going berserk in the village (something he had already done both with Gosa and a little bit in Cocoyashi) would have added much.

Y'know what's interesting about this? You probably already know this, but Oda _has_ stated we've seen _both_ of his parents in the manga already. And this was pretty early on relative to the size of it now; definitely before the time-skip. It's basically how the whole "Crocomom" theory came to be so prominent, as there really isn't any other notable female that we've seen. My personal theory is that Luffy is actually Robin's younger brother. Robin's mom was essentially as close to a Revolutionary as you could get as an archeologist, and would have definitely been in contact with Dragon at some point or another during her travels due to the nature of her studying the Poneglyphs. In any case, that's my head-canon anyway. I just really hope the "Crocomom" theory isn't true as it's just..so..convoluted and _dumb._ It doesn't feel like something Oda would do, but I definitely think Crocodile was a woman before "he" met Ivankov.

Destroying the room was symbolic to Nami, it's the end of her imprisonment to Arlong ! @kiggerst4 жыл бұрын
Yeah he still not use to one piece. Along the way he will realize that more than an actual cool looking fight, the narrative of the fights are more important for oda. Read long enough and he'll see a patern that luffy only enter serious mode when he figured how's the fight outcome will affect the people his fighting for.
@ac34004 жыл бұрын
It’s even more so of importance to luffy due to him ignoring her backstory, taking on arlong purely for the sake of making her cry. Thus when he see the room, he also see a decade of suffering that she endured. That story beat hits so hard, even on a symbolic level given the political commentary on race.

14:29 - OK, So I've read/watched the Arlong Park Arc 3 separate times, and this shot right here makes me want to cry every single time. Just, the whole crew, 100% serious, ready and waiting to give Arlong hell. I think it's because this moment right here is what really cemented the Straw Hats as a family in my mind. It's the first time (of many) in OP that we get to see one of my favorite tropes in action, the "You hurt one of us and now we're gonna make you pay" trope. This is the first time we get to see the majority of the East Blue members of the crew come together as a cohesive unit. Sure, before this, they've all started to build a relationship/dynamic as a group. They've fought with and for each other, they've inspired each other (tho it's mainly Luffy inspiring the other members of the crew), and they've bantered and bonded. But this is the first time we get to see just how far they're willing to go for each other, to keep each other happy. This, to me, is the moment that this rag-tag group of people really, truly become The Straw Hat Pirates.

One thing you forgot to mention was that Nami never trusted anyone to solve things out. She used them, but never rely on them. Luffy trusting her his hat was also a way to show he understand how big of leap was for Nami to put her faith in him.

This man has opened himself up to a world of theory-crafting and getting into a story that continues to grow and will surely reference back to his early reading of chapters when reaching peak arc's and lore to be flabbergasted by why Character A is like this. I'm a Anime-only myself and with it currently on hiatus due to current events, I've been wanting to rewatch the series again but coming across this YT channel I'm excited to see him making callbacks and showing genuine excitement for breakthroughs and story-building moments to try and explain these moments in such a short amount of time. Quality humor, careful care into reviewing it and enjoying it now which will grow in the coming chapters! Set sail and find the One piece, Mark!

One great character moment I think you may have missed is when Arlong sees Zoro's wounds. The look of shock and terror on his face, and his questioning of how this man is even alive indicates the very moment Arlong's superiority complex was shattered. Understandable given that Zoro us beyond badass, if you think he shines as a secondary protagonist here then you're in for some real treats.
