The great thing about Dallas was that it was a much stronger show than dynasty. Jock was a much stronger character than Blake Carrington. Jock Ewing raised two very strong sons. JR was like Jock in business but more cut throat. JR never intentionally tried to hurt his daddy or take over Ewing oil. JR worshipped Jock and always tried to make Jock proud. The same goes for Bobby. Jock's sons never disrespected him and he proved that he was the head of the family. On Dynasty, Blake Carrington, didn't have that larger than life patriarchal image. Blake constantly had trouble with each of his kids and Adam constantly betrayed and disrespected Blake. Also Blake was constantly losing credibility and for three seasons he was always on the brink of losing his company and did lose it twice. When Jock Ewing got mad, he got powerfully mad and that's when his strength came flooding out to viewers. Dallas really was a man's show from beginning to end whereas Dynasty was more a woman's show.

@@manco828 It could be argued Dallas paved the way for The Sopranos. We also have to remember Dallas aired on a commercial network whereas The Sopranos aired on HBO (America). Different rules apply to what content can be shown. Dallas began in 1978. The Sopranos began in 1999. At its peak Dallas was the biggest show on the planet while The Sopranos regarded by many as the best series to grace the small screen had a smaller niche market. I'm just thankful I've lived in an era where both Dallas and The Sopranos aired.

+11a2bdestruct there is a cable network here in ny(metv)that runs many of the old westerns...big valley,the riflemen,bonanza....and i have seen jim davis in a few of them when he was younger.....he very un assuming and did not really standout......he was very well suited for the character of jock ewing and really brought the character too life......so well that the producers did not know what do when he died......but at the time of his passing the character was still a key character to the show.....they shld have written him out for the entire season n then had the copter crash in the season finale n then introduced a new jock ewing the following season.....casting is actually a gift...some producers have it n some do not....norman lear is the perfect xample of a producer with this ability he saw sherman hemsley in a play in nyc n instantly knew he was george jefferson...hemsley refused to leave the play he was starring in n norman waited 2yrs for him to be done because he knew he was the only one that cld play the role........the only other producer that comes to mind is aaron spelling....all of the original casting for dallas was also great....bobby actually resembled jock n JR actually resembled miss ellie...n sometimes a child does not resemble either parent....my sister does not look like either of my parents but actually looks strongly like our grandmother....as a infant they cld be twins...

+Chase Jackson Wow, I never knew that story about Sherman Hemsley & Norman Lear. That explains why Mel Stewart was the stand-in "brother" of George on "All In The Family". Mel was great too, but Sherman was just amazing. Also amazing is how he & Carroll O'Connor were men who in real life were nothing like those iconic characters they played. Guys like Jim Davis & Daniel J. Travanti of "Hill Street Blues" also worked & waited for many years before landing the role of their lives. It was just horrible that Davis only had a few short years to enjoy his huge success. As Jock Ewing, he truly was irreplaceable. But you hit it right on the head...casting itself is an art form, and it takes amazing vision to do it.

Konrad G. 1969 VHS was easier to que, FF and rewind to hit your spot. I have a smart tv now with a pvr , and it is impossible to que to your spot. On the upside, you don’t have to ever worry about the tapes jamming! I don’t really use DVDs. But maybe a person can stream Dallas or view on the internet. I have actually seen it 3 times in its entirety, plus the 5 promo episodes. Such a great show. There will NEVER be another.

Jim Davis' performance gave me CHILLS! He, Patrick and Larry played off each other so well. The camera angles are perfect, too. The tension just snaps! Jock made his bones as a wildcatter. By the end of the 70s that era had come to a close and it was all becoming more and more corporate. It was Larry Hagman who grew up in Texas among the generation of oilmen portrayed by Jock. I have no idea if Larry shard stories with Jim about those men or if Jim got the information from somebody else but Larry said he always modeled the ruthless mindset of JR on those old time oilmen.

When Jim Davis passed away suddenly, it seems that a lot of the spark went out of "Dallas". It was never quite the same again. Howard Keel is a good enough actor, but bringing him into the show as Ellie's 2nd husband just never really made it as a Dallas character. Jim Davis was the embodiment of a tough Texas oil tycoon and family patriarch. Can you imagine anyone else being the father of a man such as JR?

I agree completely, that the writers responded totally wrong to the death of Jim Davis/Jock Ewing. One alternative would have been a helicopter crash with reconstructive surgery explaining bringing in a new actor to portray Jock. If they were going to write Jock out as dead they needed a much better storyline than a will forcing competition for control ending in a Bobby victory. Regardless, once Jock was out the decline and demise began.

Jock was right! Ewing Oil was 100% his and he didn't answer to anyone regarding Ewing Oil least of all his Sons. He decided who would be president and no one else. It's been said the Bobby was jock's favorite but maybe on a family level but it was JR that he could count on to run the business the way he would. JR mentions a few times that it was Jock who trained him and taught him how to play hardball in business and win. Jock only wanted to raise winners and that's why he disappointed in Gary and he was right. Gary was weak and a terrible business man. By the end of knots landing, Gary lost his entire fortune by trying to harness a new form of clean energy by trying to use the power of the ocean. Ray even lost everything. I always rooted for JR when it came to Ewing Oil.

I loved Jim Davis' character as Jock Ewing. He reminded me of my daddy. Rough, gruff, and to the point. Caring, loving, and concerned when he had to be and mean as a snake when he needed to be and he didn't any crap from any of us kids, especially his sons. To give this scene context, Ewing Oil had gone to Bobby's head. He got so caught up in it that it put a strain on his relationship with Pam. He also forgot who really was Ewing Oil. Should Jock have given Bobby a heads up before taking that money out? Sure. But Bobby had no right to embarrass him in front of his friends and create a scene in public view. But we wouldn't have all of these scenes that made Dallas great.

Jim Davis added grit to Dallas, made it feel like watching a Western. When Davis died, it was just a night time soap. Still a decent product but never would be the same without Jim Davis as Jock. His one true tough sob son Bobby, had the stones to go toe to toe verbally with Jock. Jock admired him for it, even though he was fuming over it in this scene. Great scene from a legendary actor to a darn good one.

life is amazing at times n confusing at others...jim davis had been around for years before taking the role of jock ewing on dallas.....but it was this role that suited him so well n allowed ppl to see what a great and under rated actor he was....also jock overshadows bobby so much in this scene we miss that this was a scene that was well done by all invovled and what it takes to make a scene great...this was well written, well directed n well played by both jock n bobby.....but we can not leave out the svengali...jr.ewing!!!

This is such a great scene that in just 3 minutes raises some profound moral questions. On the one side we got Bobby: idealistic and moral. On the other side his dad Jock, who is more knowledgeable on how the real world works. "Real power is something you TAKE!", Jock explodes. And Bobby really has no answer. I myself can identify with Bobby Ewing, as I am always trying to do the right thing; and have gotten stomped for it. Does the world truly belong only to the most ruthless?

brilliant scene, totally brilliant...the writing,the directing, and the acting...totally wrong that jock resented bobby....actually, bobby was jock's favorite(and gary was miss. ellie's) and JR. new this and it is what drove his Jealousy of Bobby(Miss. Ellie explains this too clayton in the season that bobby dies)....Jock also respected bobby because bobby stood upto him(he hated that bobbby challenged him but respected him for it) whereas JR. never stood up to him or challenged him(not b/c he feared him but because he was afraid of his disapproval). Jock and JR. were alot alike. Jock mellowed as he got older but in his youner days he had a "take no prisioners attitude"(and was ruthless to the core). Jock was an old school "mans man" who thought that women should be seen and not herd.(and only the strongest survive) Bobby has alot of character & integrity but he was no pussy and was not to be fu&ked with and JR could never beat him the way he did Gary(sue ellen described him as a steel hand in a velvet glove). Jock did not like the fact that JR. was able to drive gary away and thought that he was weak because he turned to the bottle(and lost all respect for gary as a ewing and as a man)!!...(miss ellie explains all this in a conversation with clayton somewhere in the 1st season that bobby dies)...(jock like many fathers with sons...have no tolerence for weakness or cry babies in their sons.)....if i fell as a child my father would always say " now don't you start crying"....the only time men get a pass on shedding a tear is if they loose a child or their mama....my father was an old school man's man but that man loved his mama to death n she could do no wrong in his eyes....he was never the same after she passed...

And when Jock found out JR had Possibly, Allegedly, scammed the Good Old Boys, Jock look at JR and said, "JR! I'm only going to ask you this one time! Did you know those oil wells were going to go to the Socialist!?" And JR had like a 1% grin on his face and said, "No, Daddy. I swear." And then Jock looked back and JR with 1% of a grin on his face and nodded his head and said, "Ok." They were tight! And one more thing, if you didn't mind reading all that, my favorite line I say to myself from time to time is from the letter that JR got from Jock after Jock was dead, Jock wrote,"...and don't you ever let those sons of bitches get you down!"
