Join me as I hike in 13 miles to explore the River Lugg - a Wye tributary via the Glyndwr's Way on my birthday. Starting in the town if Knighton I make it to camp one after a wet afternoon. Situated in a conifer plantation it made for a great wind break yards away from a special meeting place 10 years earlier. My birthday morning was magic. I opened a surprise card and stealthily dodged some invaders. All good for the day ahead.
Shout Out: Phil at Trails and Ales From Wales
/ @trailsandalesfromwale...
Quick facts:
The Lugg is the largest tributary of the River Wye and flows for 63 miles.
It starts on Pool Hill in the Radnor Forest and enters the Wye 4 miles East of Hereford.
The tops nearby its source are heather clad and home to ground nesting birds such as Curlew, Grouse, Lapwing and Golden Plover.
It's health has recently been called into question and is the source of much debate regarding the health of the Wye system overall.

Mark, you cut a lonesome figure walking through such amazing scenery, alone, with your memories and thoughts. A wonderful way to honour Paul is to talk about him. He is a part of you and always will be. Using your Dads mess tin and Pauls pack is a touching tribute to them both. Happy, belated birvhday ❤🙏

*_Hi Mark, I think you had a wonderful birthday and you had a wonderful person in your thoughts. The walk was wonderful, so many lovely fantastic views, encounters, and certainly some thoughts in you, time for you. Very nice gesture the card, really beautiful. I can understand that you wanted to spend the day outside, I'm right there with you. Wow, and the music was really well chosen for it. We have quite a few birthdays together, we're lucky to be able to be outside so much, always a feeling of happiness. Congratulations to you belatedly and thank you for the wonderful adventure here. Mark, what a lovely adventure on your and Pauls Birthday❤ Really cool exploring along those back country roads and lanes dodging the showers and just coming across whatever happens to be there. Loved that old blue door in that cool building and could definitely imagine it being busy many years ago. Fantastic to be able to look back to that spot in 2013 where you all where giving a hand to others. Much prefer your woodland camp over the caravan after you mentioned the rats! Lovely to be carrying and using Pauls cooking kit and what a special place to be opening and reading that special birthday card😊 No better place to be on such a special day👍

A belated Happy Birthday Mark. That is a lovely card from David and Heather and an equally lovely spot to pitch your tent and weather the storm. A stealthy pitch evading the attention of the passing vehicle. What a wonderful river the Lugg is Mark and so different in many ways to the mighty Wye. Humbling to visit the source and contemplate the rivers journey down to its meeting with the Wye. That pellet could be Fox, possibly, maybe 🤔. Like you, I love those back lanes. Sad to see wildlife casualties like that and good for you for moving the little fella to the side. I was actually in Llangunllo and Llanbister a week or so ago. I love the story you told about the operatic theatre and Heather singing and you all remaining friends spawned back in 2010. A wonderful watch and listen as always Mark. Thank you. Paul 👍😊

Hi Paul, thanks my friend. It sure was a lovely card and brought back such great memories - i.e. the theatre!!! As for the pitch I was chuffed with it - yeah deep enough to evade the intruders. For sure bro humbling and invigorating to visit the source of our much loved Lugg bro. I reckon the pellet was Pheasant but it could be fox. Te-the lanes love em as we do Squirrels. Had to give it a nice bed. Well, glad you enjoyed this outing Paul - good to hear you were in the area. You have to pull up next time and walk down the Lugg ravine/source. The whole walk is in 'source walks' on my website if interested. All the best bro. Mark

Hi Mark finally got round to watching this properly with lunch ! Stunning place with great views. The cheese and cracker looked nice :) Totally agree with carrying a brolley everywhere. The views where you had the brolley lunch toward the Radner Valley were gorgeous even in that weather its all so beautiful, water therapy and the sound of the animals were so sweet 🙂 The river is so lovely. Amazing to see the old buildings that would have held horses and carts and the old cottage with the curtains, abandoned was sad to see. Aww glad you put the squirrel away in a nice bed 🛌 The village looks nice and quiet . I like the litrle tips that you give like about the water filter on top 👍 That old school barn did look spooky, I wonder why these places get left like this but funny that it was all filthy around there but that the caravan was quite clean 😮 Great nemories of you and Paul with Erica in 2013. Loved the footage of you and the cyclists. Nice pitch up place in the trees and nice that you had Pauls gear as a memory with your dads mess tin that's been everywhere! Shame you had stormy wet weather though but nice to wake up to sunshine and singing birds. Nice to have breakfast with your memories. Love the appropriate card from David and Heather :) Addelina Pattis house was stunning and great that she built a theatre and so good that Heather sang for you. Its brilliant that you are all still in contact. You nearly got caught then by the Forestry Commission Mark 😃😯That was so watchable as always. Can't leave another like👍but will leave this 🙌🙂~ Anna

Ah, the Glyndwr's Way. They say it's possibly the least popular of all the National Trails. But when you're on it, very hard to see why! Others are missing out! Funnily enough, I only discovered Phil's channel last year and that was when searching for a lesser known hike in Wales. I passed through Llangunllo two years ago, passed the Lugg and thought of you. Good on you, Mark. Cane in hand but forever growing stronger. Looking forward to the second instalment - all the very best.

What a nice vibe to that journey Mark....really getting back to basics stuff. Those old sunken lanes are brilliant, they just reek of age and old travellers. Loved the opening piece of music. The cheese spread in a tube was a great idea, I wonder why I never vthought of that myself. Sad to see the old houses being abandoned, they are a part of a village's cultural identity. That telephone box would make a good book swap location. I can across one in my sister's village in Dorset a few years ago. Kind of you to pass on a map to those cyclists. I love reading maps they show the past, present and future simultaneously. Nice to still use equipment from not only Paul but from your father, too. There is a charming continuity there. Amazing the FC didn't see your tent, good for you.

Hi Andrew. Yeah, that was the first tune I went to in my folder - worked well. That cheese was lovely - recommended. I agree although some of the villages identity remains in that the cottages were untouched almost. Oh for sure Andrew - I've got books out of tel boxes before. Hi Mark , there is plenty of poetry in this hike, a landscape I really love. So nice old house at 7:57. Looks abandonned , and then, hightly attractive. A great area for a birthday celebration, for sure. I didn’t quite understand, at one point you say "they’re coming" and now I expect to see animals that wouldn’t have detected you, but I see a kind of "patrol".... Am I to assume that bivouac is forbidden ? Well , if it is , Your freedom was even tastier. 😉👍🥾 Have a nice day. 🌿Gaddielle

Hi Sue, so sorry to hear that. I know the rapid change in reality and how it hurts. It's seven years and I still hurt each day - we were twins who lived together - 48 years. What was your brothers name? I always ask. I'm certain he was a wonderful man. These people sure do leave us in deficit - we have to find a way to fill that somehow. Memories and going back over old ground helps. Not all the time but every now and then they're worth a pilgrimage. I wish you all the best - bless your brother. Peace.

@@WyeExplorer thank you. His name was Chris. He had an aneurism about 18 months ago and made a miraculous recovery. He then went to Italy with 2 of his sons and cycled the Stelvio pass. Then to Majorca for another cycling holiday. I’m in the Dolomites right now, and he suffered another episode unexpectedly. So I wasn’t with him today. But I saw him a couple of weeks ago and have a wonderful final memory of him. Our memories are precious, and I thought about you today. Alright there Anthony. Hey, I wasn't going to leave it there to be flattened. A nice bed for it in the end. Interesting about the dead lock down squirrels - good meat there. As for the caravan it was clean inside but filthy around it. Yeah, they're good opportunities. A pleasure to share. I miss my twin every day - I knew I was heading somewhere special. Ha ha, just keep still innit? All the best. Mark P.S part 2 is a goodun.
