*_Hello Mark, I'm delighted to be here again and to be able to accompany you. The start in the best weather, nice people and great views. You didn't promise too much, a fantastic spot in the Black Mountains with great views. I enjoyed it with you. What great pictures of the walk and a lovely evening, just glad you captured it so nicely before the mist blocked the view on the way back. A bit damp underfoot too, I know that from the hikes in Ireland :) Mark, I hope you are doing well too and everything is fine. Best regards, Angela

Mark, your spot had just about a perfect view down over the valley👍 Always on the look out for those (dry) areas of green among the rough😊 When you have some level(ish) ground, great views and decent weather that adds up to a good camp👍along with hot food and tea of course. Cool to hear about the role of farming and community and its association with place names. Well done on manging with the technology glitches😊Hopefully the soothing sound of rain on the tent aided your sleep😴 It has been the wettest October on record at some weather stations here in N. Ireland, not many weather windows around! A lovely trip and definitely worth a return👍

Ever since i was a kid im very wary of ponies , a word of advice for ladies or people with long hair near linely ponies , they think your hair is hay and will try to eat it if they are hungry enough .. Loved this Mark, great video of the Olchon Valley brought more to life with your insights and local knowledge. It's funny how many English place names in the area are indeed Welsh names. Such as Maes Coed, Pontrilas, Dulas, and Crib Y Garth for instance. Welsh place names usually have significant meanings so it is worthwhile learning what the Welsh names means. I am sure it'll give you greater appreciation of the history and lore of the area. I was born and raised in Pembrokeshire and love the history under our feet. As I now live in Northern Ireland I thoroughly enjoy learning about the ancient history to get a feeling of the people who trod the paths I now follow hundreds, maybe thousands of years later.
@WyeExplorer
@WyeExplorer Жыл бұрын
Hi there Mike, glad you enjoyed this one. I agree totally learning all about the place names can illuminate the landscape and a walk and or camp. There's plenty to learn around here. Now Pembrokeshires one place I need to explore - never been can you believe it? As for Ireland - well simply beautiful and enthralling. Thanks for the great comment. Have a good rest of the week. It is grand around here Dave - you guys would enjoy it. Yeah, good people all round - the Welsh are lovely Anna and Alf included. Yeah, a great new pitch - I know the land Dave. There are flat spots on them big slopes. Re-the Olchon name I enjoyed sharing it. I know you guys resonate with that. As for the clag we can get lost the slopes for sure - your lakes adventures sound fun. Well, thanks Dave - always appreciated. Mark

What a great camp. I think your brother would have loved it for sure! And I think somehow he's still out there with you! The zoom on your camera worked pretty good! That dog lamp, great idea! Clearly a sheep area! And thanks for the info on the Along Valley. People sometimes can make you feel uncomfortable. Great camp out! Good one Mark. All the best, Kaat

It was a good one Kaat and my leg was alright. Ah, I see Paul - he shows himself. The camera is not so bad and neither is that dog light. When you were looking at that 1st quarter moon mark, you would have been facing south if it was about 1800h, or 6pm if you like. Learned about moon navigation when I was in my late teens from an old sas escape and evasion manual I bought in a book shop in Llangorse called the outdoors man book shop or something like that. I loved being in that shop. It had all the answers to what I wanted to know about the land. Happy days 😊

Alright there Andy, I was facing South bro - spot on. Hey, good to learn about moon navigation. I must say I've thought in the past that I could learn things from you - one day. That shop at Llangorse sounds amazing - just my kind of place too. Thanks mate. All the best. Mark
@Andy-walkaboutnutty

@WyeExplorer I have to say Mark, that shop isn't there anymore. However, I have done a short video on it, exactly the same that's in the book, and I've added my own experiences to it as well that isn't in any books. Put in moon navigation in the wildeness and it should come up. I've just discovered that I've spelt wilderness wrong, so I'll have to get into the studio and change that. Oops 🙄

Great to see you out enjoying the freedom and peace that nature offers Mark, cant see any limp so leg must be on the mend. I miss hearing the grouse in Scotland, hence why i used to love the Peak District, grouse always telling you off for being on their land. In Scotland you mainly hear cuckoos. Nice camp and you even had a couple of ladies for company, lucky you lol. Take care my friend, and as you say, peace, Atb Bill and the fleapits.

There are very few 'walking in the landscape' videos where one feels the experience as well as enjoying the visuals and narration but this is a rare example. I love tracing the meaning and origin of place names. They are given by people in the distant past and have a tremendous resonance about them, if only we have the means to interpret their story. I certainly felt for you, Mark, when you were momentarily disorientated. I had something similar in the 'tame' landscape of the Surrey hills and that, for me, was rather alarming. Still, you seem to know that landscape so well and are able to read the signs that nature lays out for you. Can you explain for me the reference, a cul-de-sac valley? I've never heard that in reference to a valley.
@WyeExplorer
@WyeExplorer Жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew - that's very kind of you. Credit to the landscape. It doesn't surprise me that you enjoy place names and language too. I love interpretation! Yeah, I couldn't see 25 meters and it was new slope. Them Surrey hills sound good although testing at your time of visit. A Cul-de-sac valley is just that, one that comes to a dead end. There's only one way in by car for example. Well, many thanks Andrew - always good. Mark
