13 Reasons Why Plot Recap
Ok so Season 3 pretty much centred around the murder of Bryce Walker. The highly hated teen died a disgrace with very few friends and because of this everyone was a suspect.
We learned that it was Alex that carried out the crime but the season ended with the blame being pointed towards Monty which exonerated him completely.
Throughout Season 4 this lie slowly unravels and we pretty much watch as the truth slowly comes to the surface so that the characters can finally close the book on it.
However this isn’t the only closing of the book and metaphorically, Season 4 culminates with the students leaving high school and starting a new chapter in their lives. The tapes Bryce are seemingly destroyed, the college applications begin and we watch as the group slowly drifts apart.
13 Reasons Why thematically has always been about choices and how certain choices can have a butter fly effect that ends up in things spiraling out of control. Season 4 exemplifies this with the choices that the characters have made in the prior three entries all having large carry overs.
I'm going to primarily be focusing on the arc of Clay as I think that has the most reprecussions on the others but there's just so many things going on that I would of course love to hear your favourite aspects of the show. Jessica, Tony, Justin and well everyone has a great arc for the finale but I feel like Clay is sort of the driving force.
From the off the season really drives home how difficult it can be for some to survive high school. The show even opens with a line stating that some people just don’t make it and a big death is teased with a funeral that happens six months ahead of where the majority of the season takes place.
Now I really think another major theme of 13 Reasons Why is that two wrongs don’t make a right. Though Bryce was a terrible person, the murder of the character was also wrong and thus the group have to deal with the repercussions of it. The choices they made to cover it up have devastating affects.
Nowhere is this more represented in Clay and the anxiety that he suffers with throughout. As someone who has dealt with anxiety myself I found the portrayal very accurate. Though I haven’t exactly had the ghost of the person I framed for murder haunting me, overthinking things and thus creating paranoia can often happen. It can send your body into weird states such as agitation, over heating and shutting down.
Worrying is often an overuse of your imagination and I loved that this season dealt with the inner turmoil that Clay was suffering from because of all that he’d been through. Whether it's Tylers gun, the cover up being uneartherd or just the ghost of Alex that haunts him, you really see what is happening to him mentally.
The paranoia heightens when Winston arrives at the school and it emboldens Clay's mental illness as he believes the truth will finally come out. Winston was of course the secret ex of Monty and he knows he's innocent due to being with him on the night of the murder. He starts to get closer to Alex and I actually spent a lot of the show wondering whether his feelings were genuine or if he was simply manipulating the character.

Can you answer this question: why did Justin had to die? He deserved better. If he had lived, he would be living proof that anyone can survive through what he’s been through like abuse, drug addictions, and sex work when he was homeless.

Joselyn Inga well he said he had sex with men for money and I’m assuming it was unprotected sex so that’s how he got HIV and then aids. AIDS aren’t curable and if not treated correctly a person can die to aids. But let’s say he would lived in that situation. He would’ve probably lived out the rest of his life with Jessica, but they would’ve never been able to have kids together since Justin had aids. And I know they could’ve wrote the story to where Justin never had HIV in the first place but I guess that’s just TV shows nowadays.

The best It first focused on hanah ' s issues n then on clay ' s anxiety n Hallucination issues ! Which were completely relatable to what happens these days ! As much as I wish we did, we don’t live in a Fair reality. Justine made choices that ultimately cost him his life, wether he knew it or not at the time, but that’s life. As we grow up we don’t know what the hell we’re doing or how to handle the things that go around us and so we make mistakes. Justines character arc was so beautiful, but his death grounds it to the reality of our world. But what should be taken from this is that for those that see this, we now know the potential consequences of making the same mistakes as Justin.

I think that Justin was keeping a secret to his so Clay, Jess, Charles, Alexis, Ani, Zach, Tony, Tyler, and his parents too, Won't find out that he have AID. And he did have AID since season 2 or 3 (idk) from being homeless and having sex with man for drugs. Again I was shot and see after Justin die in the hospital bed. This final season is the best emotional season (same thing like season 1 after Hannah Barker commit suicide that she was rape by Bryce Walker) Season 2 I like pretty well, But season 3??? Not so much.

For me the two heartbreaking scenes in this season were when Justin n clay held hands and saying that they love each other, all I could think of was the opening scene when Justin screams at him about Hannah not being innocent n he’s like ‘so you know who I am?’ N he was like ‘of course I do clay’ N the other was when monty n Winston dancing n monty saying he was ashamed of being gay n he never would have made him happy, I think that was Winston’s way of saying goodbye n I think both scenes were beautifully written

I had sooo many issues with this season as well, but mostly I’m just upset by Justin’s death. Also this season genuinely was pretty good, after the first one. The portrayal of anxiety, it’s hard to visually represent something that happens within a person, but they kinda pulled it off. Anyway, it was a day with mood swings, just finished watching the show and it had me weeping in the end. The season gave closure the way finales should and didn’t really disappoint. Glad i chose to watch it.

1. The ending was fantastic. The relationship between Clay & Tony had been neglected for so long that I'm glad that it ends with them. 2.) Jess & Alex are both going to Berkeley?! That should be interesting. 3.) Was not expecting Tyler getting together with Monty's sister. That took some tremendous healing for both of them, especially with them being holed in the restroom during the lockdown. 4.) I liked the idea of Diego, but I did not like Diego as a character. He redeemed himself by the end and I think he gave a lot of respect for Justin in the end, but he was really annoying. The school riot episode is his best episode, but it's sad that they never show his angle of his racial harassment...a major disservice. 5.) At some point throughout the season, genuine friendship was seen...between Jess and Ani, Clay and Justin, Tony and Tyler, Zack and Alex...even Charlie risked his life to save Clay, there were great relationships that fell apart and came back together stronger than ever. 6.) I wish Justin hadn't relapsed. I was rooting for him to stay clean the entire season. 7.) I do like that Winston got his closure with Monty...and that ghost Monty kept it honest with Winston about how a relationship between them would not have worked. It was actually one of the best scenes of the entire show. Great final appearance by Timothy Granaderos. 8.) Anyone else missing Sheri & Marcus?! Here I am thinking there are two people missing for that burial scene. 9.) Ghost Bryce & ghost Monty were really weird. I know they manifested differently depending on who saw them, but still a weird situation. The one thing I did notice was that Tyler never saw a ghost Monty or a ghost Bryce. Maybe because he was the only one being honest about his internal feelings. 10.) Saw Alex & Charlie coming from a mile away. The shocker really was the Dean. 11.) Dayum, Justin! My heart broke while watching the last episode, but the lesions were dead giveaways. Brandon Flynn deserves all the accolades. Justin had the best character arc of the season... 12.) Drunk Zack is hilariously annoying...but better than average Zack. Notice no matter how intoxicated he is, he still can rescue Alex?! Zalex = friendship goals. 13.) The writers handled Ani much better this season. We got to know her a lot better and that's great. 14.) Jess was a bit extra this season, but still one of my favorite characters. 15.) I am so glad that Clay acknowledged most of his trauma came from Hannah's suicide and handled it appropriately in the end. 16.) The realistic lockdown drill and the school riot were both handled well, but also very unnecessary. The lockdown was just used as a trigger for Clay, Alex, and Tyler. The riot was used to bring up racial discrimination in school discipline, but it was immediately tossed aside in the following episode. 17.) One of the best series finales I've seen in awhile!

when i saw the funeral scenes at the beginning of the season, i was rlyy hoping it wouldn't be justin. never cried this hard over a death on a show before. literally felt like i lost someone i loved and knew personally. still kinda broken by seeing the process of his death lmao. ON THE OTHER HAND, i love how Alex kinda figured out his sexuality. him & charlie were way too cute for me to handle haha. OH AND FINALLY, wtf was up with zach this season hahah. but that prom scene when he was in a room with that drunk girl on the bed and it looked like he was about to rape her was actually rly shocking but powerful tho. zach always hated bryce for what he had done and almost beating him to death has kinda been messing up with his head throughout the whole season. when alex and charlie went into the room to take the girl somewhere safe, and charlie said to zach to try to be better, it kinda made zach realize what he was abt to do and what path he was going through (which was pretty similar to bryce's) and that why since that particular night we saw zach being him again. ANYWAYS that all haha. hope yall are enjoying ur day :)

While I did genuinely like this season a lot, I had multiple issues/things I just didn’t like about the season: It was difficult to watch specifically the first couple of episodes. They were just packed with hallucinations and mental breaks that it made it pretty difficult to tell what is actually happening and keep track. Winston just kinda being there. After the third season we were led to believe that the main plot of the fourth season would be winston trying to clear montys name and expose who actually killed bryce. I get that his role was to kind of show Clays paranoia but he still didn’t do much of anything rather then kiss alex and hang out with tyler. He was completely overshadowed by Diego, which reminds me... Who tf is Diego? This fool claimed to be like best friends with monte but like.. where did he come from? To my knowledge he was never given any screen time or any real role in past seasons so his inclusion is just kinda bizzare. Of your gonna have one of the jocks fighting for monty at least make it someone recognizable from previous seasons. The prank that the football team pulled on clay kinda came out of nowhere? idk I might have to rewatch because I could’ve missed it but I swear the phone calls just kinda started with no reason behind them. JUSTIN DYING OF AIDS SUDDENLY!!!! Something about the whole ending just feels so weird to me, almost as if they just killed him off to have the show end with a bang. The ending did ruin me tho so I guess they achieved their goal. All in all this season was a huge improvement from last season, and i’m so thankful ani took a step back.

I didn't like season three not because of Ani's sudden takeover, but how they got away with lies and the negative message that conveys. However, Season 4 continued with their initial narrative, portrayed that punishment doesn't necessarily have to be jail, but will be your own conscience and they all suffered individually for their actions, as the lesson was to learn to live honestly, in the moment and learn generally to care about others, as it leads to a great butterfly effect(Hannah Baker). It was a great ending. Justin had to die so as to bring a sentiment to the show. He shows improvement, but doesn't 'break down' because of his constant relapses, but his past and how being silent haunted him in the future. Ani had intentions of protecting and blending in, gaining loss of self-identity in the process and learns her lesson. Tyler tries to do what is right, regardless of criminal justice served and suffers his very own consequences(trauma). Jessica realizes that the road to change isn't easy, regardless of her weak 'events' and notices that she is strong because of her experiences, regardless of who has to say what about what she has to say or do to protect many other than herself. Winston learns that he was caught up in a fantasy of Monty and wanted revenge for that, and not because he loved him (well, because he didn't know him like Monty's victims did) and finally lets go of the grudge(not revenging on Monty's killers even though the killers suffer from adverse consequences anyway). Clay finally lives in the present, forgives Hannah and acknowledges his anxiety as part of him and how to deal with it (that is, as I've said, living in the moment) which is also employed by his friend Antonio, who begins to think about HIS future instead of a stressful concern about his family. I believe this Season is the best season from the four, because it shows closure, alleviation and loss as a price to happiness.

I feel like they messed up a lot of characters in season 4. Zach Dempsey was one character who had a change in development which they in my opinion trashed in this season. From season 1 to 3 Zach tries and fixes what jock culture at Liberty is and wants to lead by example. Yes, I know the paranoia of pinning Bryce's murder on Monty caused Zach to check out during this season. But that's all it was he never added anything to this season, he was always high or drunk and it made me really dislike him. He showed no characteristics from his growth as a person they totally ruined who he was. As for Alex and Zach, this is a personal issue but the show had literally baited those two ended up or at least dating since season 2. Even the actors baiting Zach and Alex since the trailers and I think the show could have had a wonderful storyline and plot with Zach and Alex being together. However, Alex just went from kissing Zach in the first episode to questioning his sexuality to being with Winston and then finally Charlie. And to address the Charlie relationship I think it was forced and had no creative storyline. They should have had Zach and Alex end up together because of the established plot and storyline they messed it up by having Alex end up with Charlie. A character that they never interacted within the 3rd season and they never gave any time to plot you as a viewer to like them in the 4th season. Had fans seen more moments between Charlie and Alex it would not seem as forced. With Zach and Alex, they had many caring moments in which a lot of fans found a reason to want them to be endgame. Now with Justin, the writers totally screwed his storyline and it was unnecessary to kill him off as the end of season 3 they allude to having happy endings. Justin was a fan favorite given all the writer's stories that they had written his character. Season 1 is canon to the book so the growth of Justin since season 2 made him the fan-favorite because of what he had to overcome and what he went through. I know I was excited when he was adopted by Clay and his family and finally had a stable homelife and was able to be happy for once. Yes in season 3 they confirmed he slept with men for money due to the homelessness in season 2. But to kill him off in such a way with AIDS and HIV-1 really made me dislike this ending even more. He deserved a happy ending which he was about to get going off to college. I was really looking forward to this last season to see how they all grew from the experiences since season 1 but I was deeply disappointed when half the characters regressed in growth. I still love the show but as far as I am concerned season 3 is where it ends.

It seemed like Alex didn't really like Charlie all that much and the only time it looked like they genuinely liked each other was at prom when they were dancing, but both before and and after that scene it was obvious (at least to me) that Alex didn't really like him all that much. And also I believe that the show baited too much especially in season 4, there were so many times it looked like Zach was secretly in love with Alex, but it was just played off as friendship. It infuriated me because unlike all the other bromances in the show Zach and Alex were portrayed to maybe have romantic feelings for each other. I just believe they should have handled Zach and Alex's storyline better

Half good half bad, they handled a lot of things in a spectacular way, like Ani being more likable, Tyler as a whole, Clay getting help, Tony starting a new life, Winston realizing he barely knew Monty and Alex finding happines. And they handled other pretty badly: Jessica being an asshole every time someone told her not to trust Diego even tough she knew he was using her, and using Diego to make Justin jealous was kinda illogical. And Zach going into a downward spiral of depression after having his dreams crushed was expected, but no one worrying about him just makes no sense. And the car crash scene might as well not have happened in that it added absolutely nothing to the plot, just a cheap cliffhanger.

The best It first focused on hanah ' s issues n then on clay ' s anxiety n Hallucination issues ! Which were completely relatable to what happens these days ! And honestly speaking I have learnt a lot from this show.. N it was perfect addressing all these issues which must hv helped the audience ❤ I cried for ages when Justin died😭😭I sobbed when I saw justin twitching cuz i didnt want to see my boi like that i didnt want him to go through that shi man ...com on guys why u gotta take my boi justin he was my homie man. Fkn sad ending n the moment when Clay was reading Justin's essay and he found out he wrote about him and choked on readin"He's my....brother" i just burst onto tears and my heart exploded! Almost everything was PERFECT in this Season , I was a bit disappointed with season 3 but Season 4 was rlly GUD ; addressing all the mistakes that all the characters made n sticking with Clay ' s mental issues n Hallucinations ! Am gonna MISS this Show so Muchhh it was my First n the BEST show , soo relatable n was rlly Helpful for me.. everyone should atleast watch this ONCE !

@@nucleoheaven2372 this season was boring as fuck and the plot absolutely sucked. let one of the best characters die of aids all of a sudden where it makes no fucking sense with him being healthy up until now. and yeah the bryce walker case is all of a sudden closed so no one elses feelings get hurt. gimme a break. that shit would not have happened in real life. this is just an overly dramatised show that makes you feel more depressed than actually preventing it. season 1 was interesting, season 2 was ok, season 3 was pretty good and then season 4 just downright sucked with a shit ending to top it all off.

Remember Clay technically had a split personality. I assume his split personality was the one that took drugs. I don't think it was Justin cause he didn't relapse till his mother died. It was annoying that that plot was just tossed aside and not explored, I feel the show created a lot of problems and forgot about most of them mid way, it seemed rushed but not obviously rushed if you know what I mean

This show has helped me in so many ways, i started my first year in high school (2017) when this show came out and alot of the issues being talked about really resonated with me, i also grew a strong connection to the characters and in a sense felt connected to the show in a way ive never felt before with anything else. Now its 2020 and im about to finish high school and move on to the big wide world. I’m so thankful for this show, everything from the actors being perfect for their rolls, the beautiful setting of the show, right down to the emotional music that touches the heart of the viewers, it was perfect. Im so glad there was mentions of Hannah in season 4 and we even got to see a glimpse of her right before clay met Heidi, i got goosebumps when we saw the back of Heidi in that green sweater with the long hair looking at clay, she looked exactly like hannah did when she met clay back in 2017. Im gonna miss this show and all the lessons its taught me along with my connection to the characters and everything else, its gonna be sad to see it go but this show will have a place in my heart forever. 13 Reasons why, i love you and i let you go.

Aye I'm class of 2020 too and I feel this. Kinda like the show grew up with us? Like it was talking about things that were relevant to use because we were in high school and a lot of shit they talk about is real shit high school students have to deal with. I think it's amazing because they did it just like the 4 years of high school so essentially there is a class of students who are very connected to this show. And I'm honored to be one of them, although I wanted to see Hannah more in the end but I understand Heidi is kinda taking Hannah's place in a sense, like he has to move on from her and find his own happiness in the living world with people who are still alive. But overall high school is fucking crazy and this show is a modern masterpiece and I'm so happy to be as connected to it as I am but now we have to move on. Class of 2020

One major oversight, I feel, is that Clay's mental issues (while understandable from the stresses he's been under over the years) are clearly *not* "simply" a matter of extended PTSD/anxiety attacks -- his symptoms are all-but textbook onset schizoaffective disorder (if not, in some episodes, full-on schizophrenia). Coupled with his fugue states and near dissociative identity disorder, the more responsible approach the show could have taken would have included his having much more extensive therapy as well as likely requiring medication in order to settle to a more balanced mental state/personality. In that context, I feel that they "magic bullet'd" his recovery -- it's functionally turned on-and-off as the plot requires, which is *not* a valid presentation of the issues he was clearly experiencing. That said, most of the other elements of the season were spot-on and timely and overall was a good ending for the series (if, again, perhaps not responsibly presenting Clay's mental health issues in a more credible/responsible way).

I’m sorry but you’re wrong. Anxiety is so misunderstood. I have Anxiety like Clay. I’ve experienced Hallucinations and I’ve dissociated multiple times. I’ve fortunately learnt to manage it and I haven’t experienced any more hallucinations for the last two years. The reason why people don’t understand Clay’s symptoms is because it’s not talked about. I don’t talk to my family and friends about my hallucinations because they’ll assume that I am/was crazy.

I was afraid that they will again use Hannah as the Side character just like in season 3, but they told us it all got started with Hannah, the last burying her Tapes at the place Clay listened his tape. Clay's and Justin's Brotherhood. I almost cried at 3 moments, 1st Clay receiving Hannah's tapes, 2nd When Clay was reading Justin's essay he Justin says “He's my Brother” and 3rd and maybe you won't agree with me, Monty's Goodbye.

Favorite part of the season was the character evolution of Alex... I'd always had suspicions about his sexuality from the first season and season 4 finally confirmed it. My favorite aspect of the whole show was the friendship that developed between Clay and Justin and it was heartbreaking to see Justin die in such a way. Out of all the deaths on the show, even the death that started it all, Justin's was the most devastating and heart wrenching.

Clay was shown to have mental health issues since before the timeline of the show from when he was a child. Clay is also not shown to have alters so could just be exhibiting a different dissociative disorder

He did say the last time he felt safe and with out anxiety at all he was probably about 7 and very sick. That he had to go back that far shows you this didnt just happen in high school. I think high school and stressors made it unmanageable for him any longer. He couldnt even fake it anymore

This season had a lot of good things to it and also a lot of bad things to it, some questionable writing and probably way too many hallucinations and also some good character growth and good moments that made me wanna keep on watching but the one thing I will always agree with is how good the ending was it gave every character a final arc and there own goodbyes and didn’t make us wondering what was next for them, that they were going to live normal lives, what they deserved and this ending is probably the best ending to a TV show I had no complaints to it 🙏🏻

We end the way things began , with Clay losing someone he loves. This time it's not a sudden, lonely and unexpected death like with Hannah, this time Clay gets to be there for Justin and tell him goodbye and how much he loves him. When you think about it Justin lying about hooking up with Hannah is what really sent things into a downward spiral and leading to him running away and eventually causing his demise . The overall message of the show has always been how actions have consequences and we see this in the end.

I’m just upset Justin died I feel like he had THE MOST character development and I would’ve liked to picture him getting into college and turning his life around ya know but this season definitely touched on the characters mental state especially Clay and I think the way this show is written you can really see how the power of friendship and love can have a HUGE impact on the choices people would make to keep one another safe and clays graduation speech and Justin’s essay says it all *I feel like I just rambled a bit but this season was definitely worth bingeing* honestly this season puts you through an emotional roller coaster but in a good way I wasn’t expecting it to end this way at all although I do wish Justin would’ve made it I actually liked how this ended
