Most of Panama is rural and many expats will tell you that it is safe. Panamanians are wonderful people and if you show an interest in them they will embrace you and accept you into their social circle.

I am Panamanian and usually I pay with credit card all the time in fact I don't use cash here! There is no need to use cash in the city. I agree about the rain, I have lived in Costa Rica and it's the same just colder and it's not as heavy as here. Yeah Drink and rive is no good man it's irresponsible!!!!! One of the things here is that a car is a need here due to the rain and bad public transportation. Jajaja hot water? It's too hot here for hot water!!! You rather would cry for cold water 😂 I agree is hard to star a business here as well as many places, but it's easier than several countries in Europe like Spain were the taxes will kill you.

One of the best countries I ever visited while in the Army. Down time was extremely fun and lively; also travel is easy: Taxi, Bus and train. The people were friendly before and after the War; even got to meet Roberto Duran. Outdoor sports is great SCUBA, Snorkling, fishing, Surfing and tours. The lazy-carefree atmosphere. I will agree that God made everything that kill you, bite you or sting you was put there. I also remember most people due tend to try and speak English except for the Interior where Spanish is a must. The food was exceptionally great too and a lot of road side stands and stalls.

You must have come during rainy season. There are only 2 season rainy season and dry season. It does rain every day during rainy season but you only have a few days during those months where it will rain ALL DAY. You will experience very heavy downpours. Very heavy the loudest thunder I have ever heard 😆 BUT. In my experience run will maybe last 2 hours max. Heavy downpour for about 30minutes. Then it can dry up and hours later you would not even be able to tell that it rained

Bro I live in Panama and you dont have to pay utilities in cash if you have a card. I been here 5 years and never had that problem. Not to mention, it does not rain all the time, only un the rainy season bro. You are a little off on these things my friend. You definitely can't leave food out, those little bugs are everywhere. I have never seen a spider in my bed! Lol! Those roads are truly jacked up. I live in the city and never had a power outage or water issues, or internet issues. Everything does move pretty slow. That is very true. Nest thing to do for electronics is take a trip to the states and bring them back. Party all the time, at least before the pandemic. Now not so much. Learn Spanish for sure!!! One of the many problems no one addresses is the Panamanian currency. Although Panama has its own currency (the Balboa), however, Panama also uses the U.S. dollar. The Balboa to U.S. dollar exchange rate is 1-to-1, which doesn't make since when it comes to GDP. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Panama was worth 52.94 billion US dollars in 2020. Compare that to the U.S. GDP in 2020 at l$20.93 trillion. So how did the 1-to-1 exchange rate balance off? Someone with subject matter expertise in economy explain this...

What if I live in North America & already live without internet (except during certain hours), live without using credit cards, am used to 7 months a year of bad weather, don't drink alcohol, have ants in my kitchen evey summer now, have no sidewalks, have brown outs regularly, prefer a very slow life, am not into buying "stuff" or "brands", have never used Amazon, shop local, don't plan to open a business, have neighbors that party all night & set off fireworks at all hours, have no interest in expat communities, prefer to learn the local language, live super frugally (no-spend year, anyone?) and have not seen my friends in 2 years already (thank you COVID lockdowns).... The big difference? Cost of living here is 3 or 4 times that of Panama. Yup, Panama sounds AWESOME! Hope to visit soon to see for myself!

I did a dry run multi month visit to Panama, and did not experience most of the points stated in this video. My internet was excellent and It cost me $18 and my land lord also paid the same as we shared the cost. Cash for payment is true in smaller shops. Regarding ATM, sign up with Schwab bank and they will pay your fees. Regarding rain, the rainy season is from April to November, and the amount of rain you get depends on where you live. For example, I lived, by choice on the Aezuro Peninsula and it has the least rain of all of Panama, and always has low humidity. We have have lived in SE Asia for some years and the temperatures were never a problems for us when we lived in Panama. We never used AC in SE Asia or Panama. However, many Americans to find it hot and use their AC. I find that to be crazy, because one can adapt to the heat by using only fans without a problem. Give yourself some time to adapt. Also, temperature changes one degree for every thousand feet in altitude depending where you live. Panama is one of the most diverse countries in the world, thus offering many options for life choice. Mountain towns are like endless spring, but to cold for us. We never experienced anything about the Panama culture to annoy us. In fact we found the people very helpful and peaceful. In all our time in Panama, we never, never had one problem with bugs in our home. In fact, I can not even remember seeing any bugs during our stay there. Regarding crosswalks and sidewalks. We commonly experienced drivers slowing down well before the cross walk because they could see us approaching and would stop and wave us across. I know this is hard to believe, endeared us to Panamanians. Condition of the sidewalks varied. Mostly in the areas we walked the footpaths were excellent. Sometime would would be in an area that had not sidewalk and little traffic. As far as general traffic the town we lived in, Chitre, was pretty relaxed and nothing like you would find in the USA or Asia. Panama City has its rush hour and traffic jams can occur. We chose Chitre because it was so, so easy to live in and the kindness and helpfulness of the people was exceptional. I had watched this video over a year ago and almost changed my mind on Panama residency, but decided give it a try. Also, this video is contra to the dozens and dozens of other videos I have since watched.

Having lived in Panama for nearly 4 years, Yes there is rain, mostly in the wet season Jun-Dec, but there is almost sunshine everyday at some point. $20 to the police stopping you will take care of any traffic infractions. Bugs are everywhere in the south! Who cares about sidewalks in paradise? Rarely do you have to wait in line for anything except at the U.S. consulate. Real estate is very risky...at anytime the regime can just decide to take away your property. If you want a business buy a pineapple plantation. If you like quiet just do not live in the city. Many Panamanians speak English. Anywhere you expat to you will be leaving family but getting to the airport is a nightmare. A common problem are the locals that will jump in front of your vehicle costing you thousands and thousands so you really have to drive like 25 mph everywhere. Great place to vacation though.

I was born in Panama City. I have lived in Chicago since the late 60s. I have visited Panama 1-2xs a year for over two decades. I have also watched family members (& their American partners) retire in Panama and leave after a few years. It is not easy to find English speakers in Panama. (I have not gone to Coronado where there are supposed to be a lot.) I have been to both ends of the country but not much to the middle. I speak and understand Spanish, so language is not an issue for me, but the weather is. It rains A LOT there, for most of the year in fact. January through mid-April is dry, but the rest of the year has too much rain for my taste. There is a lot of garbage on the streets in Panama City and recycling is RARE. It is hard for me to see plastic and metal thrown together everywhere or to walk on too many sidewalks that have holes that could easily break someone's leg. Finally, many of the beaches are really disappointing. The waves are too high, and the current is way too strong to enjoy unless you are a surfer. Contadora has a perfect beach, but it is really far away and expensive to get to. Taboga's beaches are too rocky to enjoy without special shoes (in fact, this is problem at a lot of Panama's beaches), and the tide wipes out the beach by noon. The images I have seen of Coronado suggest that it suffers from the same problems with waves and currents. Believe me: I want to be able to recommend Panama more strongly. I could easily see an ex-pat being very disappointed.

1. Internet: the speeds go up to 600Mbit/s for about $150. The ping between 80 and 150 ms. Not that different from other countries. 2. Money: you'll use USD and can pay for everything using your phone. If you go to the open markets you need cash. Markets get products directly from independent farmers, it´s not a Whole Foods hipster market. And you have to pay insurance and fees for your cards, just like everywhere. 3. Rain: this one is dumb. I´ts like complaining for the heat and sand in arabia or for the snow in russia. Panama is a tropical country only 9° north from the equator. Panama has arid, rainy, dry, wet and temperate climates. All that in a 75 517 km surface. 4. Drinking and driving: it's a basic rule. There's no brainer about that one. Just don't insult the panamanian flag, sheild and anthem and you're good (that´s the reason why gringos had to give back the panama canal). You always have to be informed about cultures and laws of a foreign country. In general you'll be well accepted and respected everywhere, just treat eveyone the same. 5. Bugs: another exaggeration. You won't have that problem in populated areas. There's been epidemics decades ago but all the people are aware of the measures. There´s a law where you can be fined if there's water containers where mosquitoes can breed. Just don´t leave anything that can hold water outside (tyres and buckets). That's not a big deal, it's not different from all the other tropical countries. Mosquitoes have a season, they're not present all year and it's for a breif time. 6. Infraestructure: Panama had a dictatorship and then an invasion from the US that destroyed the whole city and contributed to the misery and crime in certain areas. There are administrative problems. You'll either like it or hate it. Don't expect it to be like your home country, it's a third world country that has been recovering from many things. 7. Utilities: there are no gas lines, you have to buy a gas tank, it's just $5.35 and will last about a month. Electricity will depend of the area. In the metropolitan area it's rare to have outages. The outages are more frequent in rural areas due to the forest, some times branches will cut the lines. Water depends of the area also. If you're in the countryside you'll need a well. The water quality is different in each area but not a big challenge. Sometimes a water filter will be enough. 8. Products: cars, electronics and everything else will be different. Sometimes of less quality and/or more expensive. Remember companies make products different for each area. Cars here have less safety scores because the laws in many latin american countries allow that. In the US they have higher standards and that´s why cars there have a higher end (ex. suzuki isn't sold in the us but we have it in latam). 9. Real estate: you just described the real estate experience everywhere. You need to research and know what you want and actually visit the place before paying. 10. Setting up a bussiness: if it were easy anyone would do it. You can't expect to establish a bussiness easily as a foreign. Just know that Panama is a third world country where the minimum wage is aroung 750, so your earnings won't be as high as your own country. And yeah, the research is a good tip. 11. Parties: just don't live near a disco. As simple as that. The hard parties come in november and december but it all depends how close you are from the discos and cantinas. 12. Speaking spanish: you wil find bilingual people everywhere and won't be discriminated if you don't know the languaje. Boquete, Bocas del Toro and Colón are bilingual. No one wil give you a hard time about that. Not like some places in the US where people get mad when someone speaks spanish. 13. Time and no money: just plan your life, you can't live blindly. Some foreigners end up in poverty due to bad financial decisions. Just make sure to have a revenew and a good panamanian friend who won't take advantage of you. 14. Friends and family: that's not specific to panama.

I don't want to live in a city and am not interested in expat communities either. I prefer to live in small communities or rural areas. I don't care about things like internet or loss of power. I am concerned about safety. How difficult would it be to live in a rural community, being that I am a gringa? The real problems you mention are superficial, sometimes wrong, depending on where you live in Panama, or is a potential problem for anyone retiring in a new place, far away. I've lived in multiple places in Panama, all with different climates so I know what I am talking about. Whether something is a problem also depends on where you have moved from, what you are seeking and whether you are a flexible person.

I stayed in, Puerto Armuelles, one summer, when I was 15 in the 80s with family there, who since left. At first, I was homesick, and then I cried myself sick when I had to leave. I would love to retire there. I live and am from southern, Louisiana, so the bugs, heat, and rain won't don't bother me. I didn't see any spiders, but lots of iguanas at daytime.

Hahaha. If you consider those bad problems, all you have is a big culture shock. That comes from not having been exposed to latin culture ever. Well, the reason why I make these "reasons NOT to" are to draw out opinions half jokingly. And another reason is that some make the argument that my other vlogs lean towards too many positive points where it sounds like I'm working for a company to promote the country, which I'm not. Panama looks beautiful, even if the focus is on why you shouldn't live there. You always take yourself with you when you travel. So, if you're happy at home, chances are you'll be happy wherever. Still, some of us have no desire to travel or learn a new language. And traveling may be a tiring experience. Furthermore, life is complicated enough when you have a basic grasp of how your home country operates. So, why add to the difficulty by traveling to a distant country and fumbling with a foreign language? There's nothing quite like being at home. Sure, take a week or two off if you have to, but leave the expat thing to those with a strong desire to travel. Again, even if the accent is on why you shouldn't live there, Panama looks lovely.

The only thing that concerns me out of all of these. is the "spiders in your bed". that is questionable and see seems like an exaggeration, but I will definitely ask around. I live in California and woke up more than once to a HUGE black spider run out from under my pillow. Once I woke up at 4 am (guess my angelic guide woke me up) to find a scorpion 18" from my head on the wall. So, insects are everywhere, can't let them bug you. LOL

it is a ridiculous comment to criticize the obvious weather Panama is not in the north or south. I agree that some laws still need to be corrected it is a tropical country you will find insects and it is because of its climate. Ridiculous comment because Panama is not a DEVELOPED country, it is one of the youngest in its independence but it is better than some. You failed to mention other important things. For example, first, the street do not have names, so one needs to buy Travel Pass from Verizon at $10/day, or some other services from other cellular providers to use GPS on the phone to drive places. Second, people living in Panama do not have addresses, hence, we cannot write to them unless they purchase a post office (P.O.) box for letters to be sent. Third, there are no dark green vegetables, such as, broccoli, kale, bok choy, Chinese broccoli, spinach, etc... given as much as rain water that they have there. Fourth, it is not fun to get bug bites everyday, from sand fleas on the beach in the evening, mosquitoes, and other bugs that we do not see, but only saw many swelling right afterward. In short, the insects are small, fast, swift, and abundant. We must have insect repellent at all times. Panama is fun to visit because there are many things to do from taking water taxi to visit various islands for swimming, eating seafood, snorkeling, going to the rain forest, seeing waterfalls, etc....
