Nope. Nothing. Dry as can be and no rot, even though the shed is located half over an "artesian spring" channel. My side yard becomes swampy after extended and heavy rains as water fills limestone fissures/caverns in a 200' rise 1000-2000 feet away, which then flows under the road, through the porrus ground, and slowly empties into my side yard, welling up from underground to the surface, forming a teeny "stream" that flows towards a drainage swell.

@@chrusion Probably got to do with how the shed bottom was designed. It is a tad different from a regular joist floor base in a house do to foundation differences. The shed is sitting on the ground and a house is leveled onto a concrete foundation. Notice the boards nailed to the sides of the shed floor girders. You have the square sill of the shed and 3 girders then a bunch of joists.

Local building codes prohibit fixed foundation structures without a building permit. Fixed foundation structures results in property reassessment, resulting in higher property taxes. Notwithstanding, I agree the four corner posts were put in very shallow holes with dry cement added (using soil moisture to eventually diffuse in and set it over time). So far, the structure has not settled, shifted, sheered, or in anyway changed during the last 2.5 yrs since it was built. Besides, I didn't need a $20,000 unattached garage with cement foundation and floor, just something to keep the weather out, and it's doing just that, despite the short comings of the company that built it.

@mroberts5664 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Lakenes what do you mean? They’re rafters. They’re fine.
@jeremylakenes68594 жыл бұрын
Mark Roberts no..your plywood/T1-11 seems at a minimum should land on studs. Your seams will bow over time and eventually will not touch anymore. The seams will open up, the edge will weather with rain. Bugs will enter and you’ll see daylight from the seams. I didn’t even see one stud to hold up your ridge beam. In theory yiu shouldn’t have horizontal thrust on a triangle, but I’d at a minimum put one stud under the ends and middle of the ridge beam and at the plywood seams.
@mroberts5664 жыл бұрын
@@jeremylakenes6859 Oh I see what you're saying, you mean the gable ends. I thought you meant studs to hold all the gable rafters up, which wouldn't be necessary. Putting studs under the gable end plywood seams would be a good idea, but look at the construction of the rest of the structure. There's a gap all around the sides, about 2 feet from the ground, so I don't think he cares about a little gap opening up on the gable ends. I don't even get the impression that he plans to install a door. Based on what his needs seem to be, with all due respect, I still think that having no studs on the gable ends is fine.

Mark Roberts Thanks for your reply. I get it. Less time, cheaper for client. I’m doing a playhouse for my kids and I kind if wish I could throw it together. Yes, this shed will serve it’s purpose well as is. It’s a good size and is built well enough. If it were me I’d use blocking at the two foot seems like you mentioned too. Erm, did you just place that massive shed on to the dirt? No concrete supports, gravel, not even sand? That'll be lop-sided in a few years, tops, and the floor will rot shortly after. No noggins, either? Where the hell is the horizontal rigidity in that structure? It's basically on over-sized dog house.
@chrusion4 жыл бұрын
Corner posts are set in concrete. Floor joists are set on cement blocks, no different than how the center of my 20 yr old, 2-story house is supported in the crawl space. Maybe knowing a bit about the local terrain geology would inform your criticism. It's been a few years (plus)... no settling, despite being on the edge of a drainage basin with fissured limestone bedrock cavities that fill up after heavy or prolonged rains, creating artesian spring-like drainage. And isn't an "oversized dog house" basically what a shed is? It's not a house, FCOL.

Wood work is nice, but it seems like you want to build this again every three years. Where i come from we build stuff to last a century , even if it is made of pine.
