American Professor here- I'm so happy to see the recommendation to ask your tutors/professors questions. You may think it makes you look foolish, but for me it is quite the opposite. I don't have a lot of students ask questions, so when they do I take note of the fact that they took the initiative to show up, and often note it to add to future reference/recommendation letters that they take that additional step.

Then of course people who don’t need to ask questions spend class racking their brains for something they can ask, just so they don’t have that negative shadow over them of not having a recommendation letter for sucking up to get ahead. What a drain. They have other things to worry about.
@jamesnoonan97532 жыл бұрын
Also it’s oppressive because the people who are extremely wealthy don’t even pay attention when someone like you is talking because they wouldn’t take a reference from you if you offered, but all the poor people are severely oppressed by this.
@debraallwardt45312 жыл бұрын
@@jamesnoonan9753 People who don't need to ask question stand out in other ways. It's not the only thing that stands out- but it matters for those who are struggling. And there are better ways to suck up than asking questions 🙂
@jamesnoonan97532 жыл бұрын
I just feel your energy shouldn’t be divided between “looking” a certain way to a professor, and actually putting in the work you need to get where you want to go. These pressures do not even apply to those who would never have a concern over being recommended, but people without connections or money need to pay extra attention to all your instructions and their work may suffer. That’s how I feel. Thanks for actually responding. I bet you didn’t read my follow up comments before you did.

Hi, I might have some tips for you - working on it for a couple of minutes every day is better than not working on it at all - if you pick a subject, check if you find enough sources close to you. If they are not, scrap that subject and change it - read and summarise at the same time and use those in your writing (plus, write the pages and book with the writer next to it)

thank you for those tips! something else i find pretty helpful: -figure out apps/websites you plan on using(just like your notetaking method). some apps like Anki are not beginner-friendly, so take your time to learn how to do it. -if needed, sign up to the library as early as possible, research websites where you can get books for free or maybe second-hand -set up account(google, mainly) for school-related stuff only(or clear your existing one from all the clutter, spam, etc) -learn to meal prep, figure out how much food you need and what you don't. and also set a system that will remind you to drink water(a cool water bottle? alarms? habit app? you decide what works for you, but stay hydrated!) -figure out what works for you in terms of socialising. does being around people bring you energy? do you like studying alone or it motivates you to have people around? do you need a study partner? -learn spaced repetition. people tend to think that they can learn something the night before the exam, and while(in some cases) you can do that, it's damaging to your health and sometimes to your grades. learn proper intervals(and adjust them for yourself). it's much better to repeat something an additional 2-3 times during the semester than cram days before the exam. and also the knowledge will stick better long-term! hope y'all have a wonderful academic year and good luck
@whynot6592 жыл бұрын
also! talk to your professors, participate in discussions, meet new people. it might sound really hard, but, first of all, most of people are afraid to speak up and secondly, you are paying for the education, so you might as well get as much of it as possible.

Good luck! I have ADHD as well and once I managed to find the strategies that worked for me I found it much easier to do well. I could tell you more tips if you want but my main advice is to try not to be too hard on yourself. ADHD is a serious disability, so if you get behind on work, miss an assignment or stay up way too late try not to fall into a shame spiral.
@jasminesmith41662 жыл бұрын
@@marshm3llow467 Thank you so much! If you have any tips I would love to hear them! I’ve been trying to not feel shame but sometimes I find it hard especially when I realise how behind I am on work compared to my classmates, but I’ll try my best to not be too hard on myself.
@@jasminesmith4166 Okay sure! Sorry this is so late, I actually just got moved in to uni so I've been all over the place for the past few days. The main tips are: 1: Whenever you get a due date, immediately put it in a calendar or whatever your organisational system is. I have a very simple bullet journal, but some kind of agenda or phone calendar works fine. This can be a hard habit to start, but once it becomes a habit (and it will become one) it's so helpful and relieves the stress of worrying I've forgotten a deadline. 2: Every day when it's time to do homework, look at the deadlines in your calendar and write out a list of all the steps to do each of the projects/tests. So, for an essay it might be like a) get papers out of bag b) review topics c) pick a topic and brainstorm ideas for the essay d) make an outline e) write the essay. The smaller the better cause then you will be less overwhelmed by how much work needs to be done. It can make it look like more work, but once you tick a few off quickly you'll lose that feeling. 3: If you feel overwhelmed with all the work that needs doing, and there's loads of other stuff on your mind like drama at school or stress about exams or extracurriculars, do a brain dump where you write absolutely anything that has been on your mind. I write out all my school projects, all my 'want to do eventually' tasks, all my long term and short term worries. Write it when it comes to mind in no particular order, because then you sort it into categories. My categories tend to be quick tasks, long tasks, things I have to wait before I can take action on, and worries I can't act on but that weigh on my mind. Then you can use the tasks lists for to dos, and it's nice to have your worries written out and out of your brain on paper. I realise this sounds like a lot, and no need to start using it every day strictly with no leeway, because that's a recipe for falling off track and beating yourself up about it even though we all do that cause we're all human. Just try them out every once in a while when they're useful, and then maybe they'll become automatic. I didn't mean to suggest that not feeling so much shame is easy or a quick fix, only that it is important work to continue trying at. Which is sounds like you're already doing, so nice job! Just try to catch the negative and judgmental thoughts, and replace them with things like 'it's okay to fall behind, ADHD makes things really difficult and I'm only human and trying my best'. And I used to feel more shame when I caught that I was shaming myself for something! It's really hard, as I was saying. But it's so nice to not be beating myself up whenever I compare myself to other people, or make mistakes. Anyway, super long comment but I really hope it helps you! ADHD is such a pain, I wish you all the best with dealing with it and good luck in college :)

Just noticed on GoodReads that you've given five stars to the two Jarvis Cocker books - this really surprised me because in your vlogs you tend to talk about classical or ambient music, or movie soundtracks, but not pop music. Do you like Pulp (and JC's solo music too)? You might also enjoy Coal Black Mornings by Brett Anderson of Suede; I believe Brett has also published a book of lyrics too. If you've not posted one already, I think it would be fascinating to see you talk about the aspects of pop culture you enjoy, be it music, comedians, soap operas, cheesey movies, etc. 😉😊

May I suggest a different approach with note-taking? In my opinion, it's more efficient and less stressing not to plan ahead which method to use. Instead, I think that every module has characteristics that you capture along the way, and it's way easier (or should be) to adapt and change your note-taking method, than to stick to a wrong choice made too soon. I'd love to hear other perspectives on the topic :)
@meisheet2 жыл бұрын
it's a good idea to define a style of note taking you like if you find solace in routine, but i also think notes will look different depending on the subject
