For years the diet and fitness industry has told us we have to be smaller, take up less space, eat less, be quiet. Yeah, I hit 50 and decided I want to take up some space, lift heavy shit, be well fed and strong, and make some noise. It's amazing how my body reacted to doing these things for myself. Hormones regulated, pain subsided, sleep better. I love Laurie's content and she was the perfect guest to have on your show to discuss these lies. I followed her visit to you all on IG and have been waiting for the episode to drop. Thanks for being purveyors of truth in the fitness industry!

This was so needed. I am 5’3 middle 40’s woman, and this podcast hit the spot. I am overweight for me by 40/45lbs I was I want to get to 160/165lbs. I was eating too much and not tracking and walking on the treadmill for 60/90mins not losing not a pound. I found this podcast and it change me. Now I track my calories I try to eat bet 1800-2100 cal a day and I am doing dumbbell workouts 4x/week since I am not going into the gym. I was lifting 5lbs dumbbells in May now I am lifting 10/12lbs and I am down 10ths and I see on my body scale that my body fat % is decreasing. I am loving that I feel strong. My hubby got us a weight bench and bar I will start using the bar in Oct and I can’t wait. I forgot that I got in the best shape of my life in the Army at AIT and my drill sergeant was a master PT instructor and she promoted women in the weight room 3x a week. I came home at 165lbs but my body fat % was 15/18% and I was tone and fit and being a black woman having a tone stomach and big natural butt was the bomb. Now having kids both by c-sections I could not suck in my stomach for years not until one of your pod cast said do stomach vacuums, now I can suck in my stomach and hold it. I listen to you guys at my desk while working and you guys have me soooooo excited that I will see my goals next year and when I hit my goal I can actually eat food because the muscle I am going to develop is going to help my metabolism and it will be something that I can sustains for the rest of my life.

Very interesting to hear her say the words "we do studies on MEN and then apply it to... "people who menstruate", "people who can bare children"" So men get their own word but god forbid you say the word "woman"? great episode just... something to think about. "Woman" is not a dirty word.
@LaurieChristineKing
@LaurieChristineKing 2 жыл бұрын
Think we're missing the point, friend. It's an attempt to be slightly more inclusive with our language as not all individuals who have a period might embrace the pronouns of she/her. It's a way to invite more people to the table (for example, LGBTQ+ individuals who prefer the pronouns of they/them, etc etc). Fitness and wellness is for everyone and this is a way to help more individuals be included into the discussion as there are gender identities outside of "men" and "women" -- does that help? ♥️ 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

@LaurieChristineKing
@LaurieChristineKing 2 жыл бұрын
We didn't get to any point, except the point that fitness and wellness *should* be for everyone, and not everyone identifies as male or female. They're slightly more inclusive phrases because not every individual who menstruates (or used to menstruate if menopausal) identifies as a woman. For example, transgender individuals, someone who menstruates but identifies as he/him or they/them, etc ♥️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

NUMBER 9 IS EXACTLY WHAT MY ISSUE WAS!!! I truly thought that if I just lift heavy, everything will even itself out and I'll get the physique that I want. But what happened is exactly what she said. I gained muscle, the scale went up, I didnt loose fat, so my clothes stopped fitting and I didn't get that physique I wanted. Que the body dysmorphia! Fast forward a year, I am continuing to lift and am currently going through my first cut to get this body fat down so I can see all the muscle ive been building for a year now! But she's right, no one really talks about that process.

This was a great episode. I thought that I had escaped all the fitness lies I believed in my younger years, but I think I was still holding onto the calories bullshit. When I would track my food, I always hot around 2200 and felt like I'd never lose body fat because anything less, I'm starving. Which makes perfect sense with Lori's explaination. I might venture to track food again, I stopped because it felt like it was doing more harm than good for me.

Great episode, I’m not a woman but I have women in my life that I care about. One thing I hear you guys talking a lot about is people struggling with eating around 1200 calories because they’ll rebound to eating a lot more, but what about people that struggle with getting to even 1000 calories because it’s too much for them? What would you do to get them to be hungrier?

I'm a 31 year old female who used to be that stereotypical 'skinny fat' girl. Always had a smaller frame, always ate much too little, rarely moved beyond what was necessary to live my life. I had a very unhealthy relationship with food, was terrified of the scale going up, struggled with hormones issues and horrible menstrual cycles.. and yet I thought I was fine only because I wasn't 'fat' or overweight. When Covid started and I was forced to work from home, I wanted to do something to ensure I wouldn't slowly merge into my office chair. I downloaded some random fitness app and started flexibility training, with the goal to be able to do the splits one day. I worked out almost every day and slowly noticed some progress. It was fun! It was motivating! Around the same time, I met my current partner who happens to be a health and fitness-enthusiast. Talking with him motivated me further and I started picking up cardio training as well. I was still eating too little and low-key proud of it, but things were changing. My body felt.. different. After a while, my partner suggested I start listening to your podcast and it was one of the best things that has happened to me in these last couple of years (besides meeting him, of course). I'm currently in the 6th week of my very first bulk. I have started lifting weights and have stopped focusing solely on cardio. I have gained muscle. I feel energetic. My relationship with food has improved. Where I used to eat maybe 1000-1200 cal a day, I'm up to 2000-2200 cal. I look better than I have looked all my life. My menstrual cycle is even balancing out (I have been diagnosed with PCOS so it'll always be a bit 'wonky', but it's improved so much!). Episodes like these contain exactly the sort of info women need to hear. I'm not afraid of the scale going up anymore. I feel empowered and in control. Thank you guys. You've changed my life.

All the women in my family are/were overweight and grew up always crash dieting which has led me to always thinking I need to try the next extreme diet or workout plan. I love this podcast. After my third son, I did bounce back fairly quickly. The secret is to stay fit during pregnancy and listen to your body. I was so excited to work out again but I started with mobility, then yoga, core strengthening exercises, then back into weights. It took me three months to get back into the gym lifting weights. There’s no pressure. Social media makes it hard yes, but there is so much more to getting back to pre-baby. I have curves now I didn’t have before having children. It will change your body no matter what you do.

45 y old woman here - keto and intermittent fasting had a totally opposite effect for me. My hair stopped falling and I had to reduce the amount of thyroid hormone I take every day for 19 years now because my thyroid started to wake up with elevated fat. So it pays off to try and observe what works for you.

Not all people who do keto and intermittent fasting are suffering trying to follow these ways of eating. Some people generally feel healthier, less bloated, better skin on keto and fasting. Losing weight isn't the be all end all of dieting.

I love Laurie Christine King! It has been so great for me to find her and see another female actually EATING because I have always struggled with feeling like I am doing something wrong by having to eat well over 2,000 cals. I would starve and shrivel up on 1800 calories and these days, some fitspos act like that is a lot!

As a post menopausal woman I definitely feel like an anomoly in the fitness/lifting world. There is almost no guidance or information on how HRT affects results or even reasonable expectations of results over 60 Given the size of the boomer generation I cannot be the only one. But even this podcast whoch is specifically for women does not address the unique issues of older women

This is freaking awesome - NORMALIZING womanhood - those who loves athletics, and make babies, and be sexy, and be functional! I too was a 5'8" 85 pound anorexic (At 56 I am at 142 and recently have accepted not being THIN- I LOVE my muscles (blessed with genetics). It Took YEARS and year and years to get better. I still am working on making my mindset all that I preach. I just wish this kind of realism was preached in the 80's when OCD and being perfect was all that teens and college students were obsessed with. BRAVO@@@@

Yo! Yo! Yo! Sal( Donny), Adam (Raph), Justin (Mikey), and Doug (Leo) What up fellas?! How the heck are ya?! First thing I want to say is you guys are F***ing awesome, your information and chemistry is inspiring. I have been listening to you guys for over a year and a half, started from episode one all the way to episode 442 as of right now, and listening daily. I have always thought of guys as the teenage mutant ninja turtles of fitness, with your personalities, energy, and what each of you brings to the table. With that being said which teenage mutant ninja turtle do you think you are and your opinion on each other? On a serious note, in regards to maps prime and prime pro, if your body adapts to the phase your in won’t your body adjust to the exercises in prime and prime pro and not adapt anymore therefore not being effective? Thanks guys, love the show, keep it the info flowing.

Great content as usual. Although I have both IG or FB I'm not a huge fan of all the filters and manipuled images available in both. I'm careful who I follow because I don't want to see images like that. Being a little older, mid 40s, I'm not so affected by it. I'm really happy with how I look. But I see how images like these help to set and enforce unrealistic expectations especially with the young. How shocking it is to think that in 2021 woman are wearing waist trainers, getting fat put into their butts, having ribs removed and getting breast enlargement. It seems like botox and fillers are the norm especially for the younger generation.

on the food stuff...it depends on the individual. If lean and fit as in 98% on this show....then strict low carb is not an issue. Moderation does not work for me and for many others. It has been very difficult learning that I have to figure it out for myself because people talk about topics that they are not expert in...or they project their own health and choices onto others. This is across the board.

As a woman approach her 50’s and above, data shows we become more carb intolerant and insulin resistant. Keto or low carb w IT is the way to go w high fiber for older ladies.
@LaurieChristineKing
@LaurieChristineKing 2 жыл бұрын
Be careful with assuming (and sharing without more nuance) that what works for you automatically applies to everyone else that's in the same age bracket. You are correct that changes in estrogen + insulin sensitivity can occur in perimenopause/menopause and that some individuals in this bracket sometime feel better going lower carb or Keto. At Paragon, we have hundreds and hundreds of women in the age bracket of 45-65 that are still happily smashing heaps of carbs because they're super active. Nutrition is still very individualized and so many factors go into how many carbs someone can or cannot handle and age is only one part of many in the equation (:
