Welcome to this next video. Customer recovers his RS5 directly from the main dealer . The vehicle was there for diagnosis and they were not able to start the engine. After a few weeks they suggest it will need a new engine unit for £17.000 + fitting. After this shocking information, the owner decided to bring the RS5 to our workshop. We spent a few days diagnosing the engine and this is what we found so far.

@dboatrig All German car manufacturers signed an agreement, that they build stocks up to 12 years, if I recall that correctly. Means, that you can roughly get parts till 20 years after the car was build. And that's from Audi, the non OEM producers will provide them even longer.

@dboatrig I sold my Audi TT Quattro last year, which was then 21 years old. My most expensive bill was about 300,00 €. No rust at all and was sitting most of the time outside. That thing was bulletproof.

Really interesting issue with this engine. Not an old car or a high mileage either. I look forward to you discovering the cause. BTW the wiring harness and coil packs on these 2.9s is a right mess. I had a bad spark plug on my V8 S5 and thought it was a bit of a job to work the packs and plugs out, but this engine is way worse! Thank god for VCDS as it saved me a crap ton of work figuring out which cylinder was affected.

I'm wondering if the dealer found it jumped timing and then immediately wrote "new engine" because they don't deal with internal repairs unless certain conditions apply (ie: oil consumption fixes, no piston to valve contact, etc.). I would check the physical timing of the engine, especially ince the cam sensors were pulled. It's probably electronic or electrical, but this way one can rule out a timing jump. We also need to see all the error codes.

I think that the dealership drain the oil, and seeing the bearings from that lifter rocker. And the metal from those rollers. You did not see them because if they change the oil. So I wonder if any of the material from those roller rocker or in bearings are in anything that is destined to destroy the engine later.

Prolly about time to sell it to some young lad and buy a 2018-2019 S7 (the last years where they put in 4.0 tfsi, which not only sounds amazing, but also easily goes to 550-570bhp 800-830nm within stage 1, which is the safezone limit for the s-tronic of 1000nm)

I think the tune caused timing and fuel ratio issues which fowled and shorted various electrical parts.

@@VAGTechnic all of the things you didn't need to replace and a relative compression test. A scope would have saved you a lot in terms of time, guessing and unnecessary replacement parts

Ivan from Pine Hollow diagnostics would have had a scope on this in the first half hour, relative compression off the starter current and cam-crank correlation with a pressure transducer in cylinder 1

“I don’t know how they’ve tried to diagnose the car”. I think you’ve hit on something there. I’m guessing the conversation went something like this: “Boss, we don’t know what’s wrong with the car, its cranking, but it won’t start” “Well, have you changed the oil and filters and given it a clean and vacuumed out the trunk? “ “Yes?” “And it’s still not working?” “No boss” “Is it under warranty” “No boss” “Just tell the customer we need to replace the engine!” Most people who work in these main dealers have little beyond basic service knowledge.

Why are the 2.9s now so complicated to repair? The 3.0TFSI was a breeze compared to this. My A6 c6 with the 3.2 is super simple to work on!

After the battery, why wouldn't you check the fuel delivery system first? Plugged fuel filter, bad fuel pump... etc. etc. etc.

should it display the RPM though? being under 200RPM my thinking is it should not - also it's 200 RPM increments on the cluster.

Classic fucking Audi workshops. Sorry for the cursing. But come to Denmark and pretty much every god damn VW/AUDI/SEAT workshop is full of people with zero knowledge of wtf they are doing. Cant belive Audi told him it needs a new engine. Talk about a mechanic who needs to get fired on the spot. Headless chickens. GG you guys. Great video 🙏🏻❤️
