I have a B9 S5 that had a version of this issue. At about 60k miles I noticed a sound very like a failed lifter or a tappet badly out of adjustment, so called the dealership and took it in. They ultimately discovered a single rocker with what looked to be a missing needle, but absolutely nothing in the oil, no issues otherwise. Replaced all the rockers with the updated units, and a camshaft for good measure. I always take all the parts from these jobs home just to look them over and the bad rocker had all the movement of the one you show, and looked like it had a missing needle, so I took a grinder to it and pulled the center pin out. What I found was fascinating...all the needles were present, and the center pin had been worn on one half so much that it looked a bit line a small camshaft. The 'missing' needle was just rotated inside the roller. It reminds me of the issue with cam adjuster pin hardness on some 4.2s (like the one in my C5 allroad). My suspicion is that QC failed to notice inadequate hardening at multiple stages in the supply chain and this is the result. To their credit Audi let my service advisor decide what needed to be done, after he asked what I wanted replaced, and the car hasn't had a hiccup since. All under warranty, thankfully! I'm going to set all the parts of the rocker in resin as a paperweight.
@daveross40912 жыл бұрын
hi i take it you still had audi warrenty? i spoke to audi uk and they deny all knowledge of a problem happening
@Steve_with_coffee2 жыл бұрын
@@daveross4091 Yeah, I bought the extended warranty when I bought the car. First gen teething problems and all, but I tend to keep my cars for a long time so it's an expense I can live with. However, this is a QC issue like the oil consumption issue and Audi should cover it in any case. If you want, I'll sent pics of the rocker I took apart. That they redesigned them tells us all we need to know. I was lucky that all the needles stayed in and the entire rocker didn't jump out, but like the cam adjuster pin hardening problems in the past, or poor quality chain ramps, or oil consumption, it's something they need to address up front. The PR would be great.

How truly common is this problem on the early B9’s? There has been literally thousands of these models on the streets for the past five years. I have searched and searched online talk to people who have/do owned them mechanics dealerships and have called all the major tuning companies including a APR 034 IE etc.. Aside from this video and a few mentioned in the Audizine forum that was it . I keep hearing that it’s been blown way out of proportion. The tuning companies I spoke with all said the same thing they never had an issue they all have the first generation early 2018 B9’s which have been highly tuned and used hard in testing . I’m sure there’s no doubt that these rocker arms can fail and I’m also sure there are many failed rocker arms that have not been reported but once again how TRULY common is this issue? I’ve also noticed that pretty much all performance European cars have some sort of issue (new & old) even the B58 .

Audi redesigned the rockers for a reason, the bigger question is why does this engine even have rockers instead of cam buckets?! rockers belong on pushrod engines... at least you can get to them easy on those kind of engines for when they need replacement or repair. Regardless this engine is doomed to require frequent engine out jobs every time you have to do a carbon clean due to the hot v design.

That's truly horrific quality from Audi. This is made worse still by how difficult it is to do a relatively basic service task like a carbon clean. On top of that what the hell is the PCV system doing putting so much cr@p into the intake manifolds (in addition to coolant from the failed cooler)? I thought my B6 S4 was bad enough! Wow.
@Tracked350Z2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much a PCV's vent back into the intake manifold. Everything I have worked on outside of jet engines, had pcv's that vent back into the intake system to be burned.
@billymania11 Жыл бұрын
Turbo motors are powerful but complex and have design drawbacks. The issue in many cases is that the boost pressure pushes combustion gases past the rings into the crankcase and oil. The PCV captures much of that and pumps it back into the intake system. Obviously that leads to fouled intake valves. Tuning makes the problem worse as boost is increased. In the case of AUDI, the rockers are an additional weak point.

So I just finished the video and I think you said if your car was made after July 2019 you’re good? So my car being a 2020 S4 I should be good right? The upgraded rocker arm should’ve been installed by the factory right? oh wait, I have to look to see when my car was manufactured, right?

Is there additional damage done when the rollers do fail? So is there a point to doing them just as a prevention job?

i wanted one of these but after seeing this and other audi engine rebuilds i will not be buying one ever audi should be ashamed.

Did you miss the part where he said Audi fixed the problem and from 2019 on it’s no problem?
@jayb26172 жыл бұрын
@@Prodigy_ad so what your saying is if you want one you have to spend 40k to get one without any known faults as yet but you have to be willing to accept that other issues might come up in a few years when they get a few years old?

@@jayb2617 I bought a 2022 RS5 Sportback and from my research Audi made a few upgrades to the new engine so I don’t have any concerns knowing the weak part of the engine has been corrected.

The Porsche Cayenne uses the same 440 hp engine. 2020 year. I drive over 210K+ now and have no problem with it. It is possible that after a certain year this problem will be fixed.
