Welcome to our channel at VAG Technic
In this video we will be working on an Audi SQ5 with EA839 engine 3.0TFSI with single turbo. Owner contacted us with a ticking noise and after a short drive I thought it was the high pressure fuel pump. We had a spare pump in the shop so I swapped it quickly and the noise was still there. There was no other reason for the noise than the failing rocker arm. Car had no misfire , no fault codes, just low frequency noise on low rpm under acceleration. With no proof the only option was to remove the engine and have a look inside. But because warranty was involved the process wasn't straightforward. More in the video ...
What's your experience with warranties ?
Thank you for watching

You guys are very professional. This video is very informative for anyone thinking of getting into these cars. The warranty aspect was interesting. If I was a genuine trustworthy warranty company, I'm not sure I would want to risk covering these engines. Unless of course, the failure numbers are insignificant in relation to the numbers on the road. If I owned one, I would be getting it into you as soon as possible, so I could sleep at night. Good public service broadcasting here, well done to all at VAG Technic TV.

@@M06H1M1 for me, it's a very weak engine...always due to timing chain problems wear too soon which makes a huge bill to fix. If that was here in Portugal, beside the very expensive car, if the engine blown like this it would be for scrap, for sure. until today I really don't know why the same cars in UK are less 5K-10K than in Portugal, is it because of the RHD ?

Hey guys, been watching your videos for a while and appreciate your insight on these topics. i have a 2017 panamera 4s that has same engine with rocker arm issues that you guys talk about. i have a ticking noise and very rough idle. could the rough idle also be related to the rocker arms going bad? trying to figure out this car, it’s been 8 months and lots of money for porsche to diagnose, all they said was new engine because carbon buildup… crazy. you were the first people that could identify the problem. thanks!

After a bit of checking and research on my RS5, I was relieved to find that my engine build date should mean I have the fatty bearings in my rocker arms. I recently did get to use my extended warranty for the first time. In the States here - my warranty is through Fidelity Warranty Services, which is supposed to be one of the better ones. Car went in for a coolant leak at my regular shop. Pretty easy process - gave my warranty info to the owner, he contacted the company, they approved repairs in about an hour. Ended up getting the water pump replaced for a leak. Gives me a bit of confidence and security going forward with the warranty, as I have about 55k miles or 5 years remaining on the warranty.

Thanks for showing this! Question: Our 2016 Q5 3.0T with 118k went in for routine service (V-belt replacement), etc. Advised timing chain needed replaced and was completed under warranty ($12,000) otherwise. Drove the car for 2 weeks afterwards maybe 1k miles. All good until massive creaking, popping sounds, no warning lights. Had it towed to the dealer and was advised blown engine due to oil pump failure. Dealer is stating this is not connected to previous work. This doesn't sound right to me but I have been advised that the warranty will only cover 12k with 13k remaining due for a new engine. Was told that the oil pump just stopped. It seems plausible that the previous work done is likely connected to the failure. Any advice on this and or what would cause the oil pump to fail. It just seems ironic that the preventative maintenance was done and then 2 weeks later complete failure. thanks

Years ago my 3.0 tdi 2015 (new shape) q7 developed a rattling noise at 4000 miles. In the end was the cam shaft tensioners and was covered under Audi warranty. Then when I got the car back I could hear a leak when accelerating, that turned out to be exhaust manifold gasket that was reused when it should have been replaced. That was sorted also. The bill had I not been under warranty would have been £8,500. Long story short Audi were great but I’m shocked these type of issues are so common!

I'm convinced that the information that I was given many years ago by a very experienced mechanical engineer stands up more today than what it did years ago. Most people accept the service schedule provided by the vehicle manufacturer as being the best available but is it? Think of it, it is in the manufacturer's own interest to only specify the "minimum" standards - 60,000 miles for a timing belt for instance; I personally would never go over 30,000 miles in any car. Who benefits from extended service intervals? the manufacturer after all, when your car breaks down, where do you get the parts? How many people actually check the quality of the oils used by garages - No One! Home mechanics are just as bad "I always use Castrol or Shell or whatever make takes their fancy" but is the best and most appropriate for your car - DO YOUR RESEARCH!

This is the thing. Even if the vehicle is serviced by a main dealership all under specs, it doesn't negate the fact that some drivers just treat their cars like shit. In those circumstances I don't always blame the manufacturer. It's like buying a used PS5 and it blows up after a few months of ownership. Then you realise that the previous owner was throwing it against the wall. Is that Sony's fault it failed or the previous owner?

As a mechanic I’ve seen this problem with the same sort of construction with Dodge Ram engines.... with them it is normally caused by using the wrong viscosity of Engine oil:too high viscosity oil doesn’t lubricate the needlebearings in the camfollowers effectively... as soon as the followers seize up the camshaft gets eaten away.... The parts for the Dodge engine aren’t too costly.... different story with the Audi engine I suppose...

At the end of the day I’m just a home mechanic so you definitely know more than me, I’ve just noticed that a lot of shops charge much more for rocker arm replacements because they follow the service manual and pull the engine. From the perspective of me as the customer, finding a shop that would do the job without pulling the engine saved me almost $3000. So you need to listen well and even use a stethoscope placed on the valve cover to hear any unusual noises. The carbon is not going to be related to the fuel type. You need to use a PCV breather tank or add a port injection to keep the intake valves cleaned off. Of course Audi uses port and direct injection on some of their cars

Also, get the warranty with a reasonable deductible, like 500-1000$. These usually cover major items. Also, if u can buy it thru the dealership it will be less headaches when time to fix problems.

Version 06M109417H roller rocker -11.09.2017 (small bearings) 2. Version 06M109417L roller rocker arm - (small bearings) 11.09.2017- 06.08.2018 3. Version 0P2109417 roller rocker - 06.08.2018-now (big bearings) 99% of failures are model year 2017 or early 2018, because they have the 1.version

Mines an 11/17 build date but idk what the exact day is, I’m sure it’s the old rockers with my luck, I’m going to try and figure out exact build date but I’m not sure it’s possible. But I have an rs5 with the 2.9t not the 3.0t but I’m not sure it matters as far as rockers used.

Chances are pretty high, that your car has the 2. version of the rocker arms…They also have the small bearings, and look identical to the rocker arms who fail, but they’re improved. ( Because the last letter of the part-number called index has changed from H to L)

@@MeLL1211 interesting. I figured since mine was a super early build I’d have old ones. But I think the b9 rs5 came out in 2017 in other countries so maybe they caught it and fixed it before early US builds. Thanks for the info

Can someone explain to me why there is so much carbon build up in the intake ports? Where the hell is that coming from? Crankcase recirculation? If so wouldn't it be wise to have a catch can to knock the fine particles of oil out of the air being sucked out of the crankcase before it goes into the intake? By the way, great video and a really thorough explanation during the test drive for things to look out for when buying these cars.

Great work guys. But 0w-20 ? ... Audi have might as well used vegetable oil. I wonder if there is a specific part where thicker oil can not lubricate , and i wonder the reason for that design . Because in common nowledge it is better to use a thicker oil every ~50-60.000 miles , like going from 5w30 to 5w40 , or 0w30 to 0w40. Why is that designed that way ? Emissions ?

Where are you located? You have an Audi? I don't think you should need to step to heavier and heavier oil at those intervals. The engine and weather should dictate and not change much unless it is over 10 years/ 150k miles older.

I had an extended warranty on an A6 and also one on a 2003 530i in the early 2000s. I never had a bit of trouble with them paying fully on any work on either, and the 2002 A6 was in the shop a lot. It had a twin turbo 2.7 litre engine. Piece of junk.

Such a shame these engines have this potential flaw. Would love an S4 Avant / S5 Sportback but completely put off by this issue. If I was an owner just out of warranty I’d be hounding Audi UK to cover the cost or a significant portion of. My sister managed to get them to cover a gearbox failure on her A6 out of warranty - it’s possible!
