Took my Uberti London Navy on the range today for the first time and it was a pleasure to shoot. I used my own cast balls and lubed wads, plus 15 grains of Swiss No. 2 (fffg) and CCI No.11 caps (would have preferred Remington No.10s, but couldn't get any!). Fired about 40 rounds with no major issues, only 2 misfires due to caps dropping off, with no jams as I routinely tipped the gun to the right when cocking, so spent caps fell away. Shoots a little low at 25 metres, but if I increase the load I should be able to compensate for that. Just finished cleaning her ready for next weekend at the range! Lovely pistol, very pleased with it!

Hello Dustin... received delivery of my 1851 navy today and set about to clean the pistol just as I learned it from your vlog... due to the wedge plug being unusually tight, well I managed to scratch up the frame trying to loose up the wedge 😞... anyhows I managed to get the pistol cleaned and THANK YOU for the excellent instructions! I was quite surprised at the hefty weight of the pistol! I’m really giddy pleased with this pistol - despite scratching up the wedge area ... I just remind myself that this is just the first of many more blemishes and scratches to come... Thank You for the inspirations, informations, and instructions... Cheers

I agree with you that this is the most beautiful of the C&B revolvers, and I also agree you need to get some Slix-Shot nipples; I couldn't believe what a difference they make. I read an interesting story about the London model. It seems that Colt displayed his revolver at the Victorian Crystal Palace exhibit, and the Brits were so impressed with both the weapon and with the manufacturing process that they urged him to open a factory in London. Because of this, many British officers in the Crimea and some of the other mid-century campaigns carried Colt's revolvers (with the Adams being the other popular model)--at that time officers bought their own revolvers. Apparently, however, they were dissatisfied with the terminal ballistics of the .36-caliber, so the popularity waned.

Third time out with my Uberti London 51 Navy today. 100 plus rounds now put through it and no problems to report thus far. Shot at 25 metres, grouping consistently with homegrown .375 balls and wads lubricated with 50/50 beeswax/olive oil, a 15g fffg Swiss BP load and CCI 11 caps.

Hey “señor Dustin”! I have two tablets I use back & forth. I yust (Swedish for “just”) subscribed to your channel on my Apple now! Boy am I proud! I started shooting guns in 1968 (I’m 81 now) when i bought my .36 Navy Arms brass framed C&B revolver. The COLT STYLED C&B revolvers were my first love & still are! I “lusted” after their aesthetically great sculptural beauty!! The 1860 Colt .44 Army, the 1861(?) Colt.36 Navy, & the 1851 Colt .36 Navy are to me the most gorgeous revolvers ever made, with the 1873 Colt .45 Army cartridge revolver right there near them!!! If a gun doesn’t have fine sculptural beauty, I’m not interested! No “black guns” for me, even though they do have their “place in the sun”, especially for home defense! I do think the brass trigger guard & backstrap do add much to the aesthetic appeal of the Colts though. Try cutting 1/4” dia. clear plastic tubing the same length of the caps & place the cap inside to eliminate cap jams, as they should not fall off the nipples into the action. They’ve worked great for me! Thanks for giving me much pleasure & excellent information with your fine videos! “Gesundheit”!

I have several percussion revolvers of different styles and calibers. I know everyone has their favorite but my choice has always been the 51. I probably have at least 8 maybe more. One of them I have reworked the front sight with a blade, widened the rear sight notch and reshaped the grip to fit my hand. I have tweaked it to the point that it shoots pretty much at point of aim at 25 yards.

4:01 I’ve heard that the best way to keep caps from getting clogged in the mechanism, if you don’t want to be fiddling with the gun after every shot, is to REALLY flick that hammer back - like, with a whipping action on the gun - while supenating your hand somewhat so that the gun is canted left. Done right, it’ll kick the caps right off and out through the cut in the frame where you load ‘em on. Any validity to that bit of folklore?

Have you tried # 11 Mag caps on your revolvers? I know that they are larger. I slightly pinch them before placing them on the nipples to help them grip the nipples. When they ignite they tend to split and fall away from the gun which causes less jamming for my. I do this with my New Army revolver with very good success.
@BogeyTheBear3 жыл бұрын
Downside of the blued steel backstrap: That top flaring portion is a veritable knife's edge! Be careful disassembling the gun if the backstrap is jammed tight against the grip, or you'll cut your thumb trying to pry the pieces apart.

Lol such a nice gun, and such an amazing era in human history. I need a colt, I got the Remington Pietta. No complaints tho. So far, fingers crossed.
@BogeyTheBear3 жыл бұрын
Now I know that Uberti sells particular models of 1873 SAA with Army-sized grips, even blued-steel ones. Which means it's possible to order blue steel grip components to fit the Army grip of a .44 caliber 1860. The backstrap of many Colt 1860 Army guns already come in blued steel, so all you might need is to order an extra triggerguard from one of those specialized SAA offerings.

I hope you and my fellow subscribers and viewers of this video will forgive me for this comment....But here goes....Back in the late 1960s and into the mid 1970s and just before I became a fan of BP rifles, shotguns, and handguns, a friend of my Dad's owned nothing but BP firearms of Belgian and Italian manufacture with reproduction revolvers making up a large part of his collection. He used nothing but lead balls and "English" BP in his firearms touched off with #10 and #11 percussion caps depending on the firearm and it's caliber. In the case of his revolvers he would fire a round and, picture the recoil you would experience from a relatively light aluminum frame .44 Special or God help you a .44 Magnum revolver, intentionally bring the revolver (especially in the case of his Colt's reproductions) to a muzzle straight up position at his shoulder while thumb cocking and returning the revolver to a "Shootist/Duelist" position and back onto target for the next shot. In your opinion do you think such a rapid, muzzle up, style (following touching of a round) would elevate spent cap jams? Such a practice seemed to work reliably for my Dad's friend and I've yet to have a cap jam with my Remington New Army....But I'm still curious because I have my eye on a new, reproduction, Colt's Dragoon 3rd Model for relatively close range feral hog hunting purposes. Thanks for your time and yet another excellent video!!!
@BogeyTheBear3 жыл бұрын
Raising the gun vertically before pulling the hammer off the spent cap would indeed eliminate most of the risk of a cap jam. Problem is a lot of gun ranges have explicit rules against raising the barrel while you're shooting because an accidental/negligent discharge might send the next bullet beyond the confines of the gun range. That's why the practice is not all that common.
@GunsOfTheWest3 жыл бұрын
That actually does help, but in many cases (like in this video), the cap actually gets stuck in the slot in the hammer face. Filing the corners of the slot smooth can help though. A stronger main spring is also helpful.
