Consider metal lath and stucco over your plywood its super strong. After hurricane andrew the only wood frame houses standing were lath and stucco you should consider this on your house as well.

We are not fans of the stucco look, going with hardi board siding for looks and longevity.

@@TKCL unfortunately there is not a lot of good stucco work in north florida so it kinda gets a bad rep but ultimately you and the mrs. have to look at that house for a long time so it better look the way you want it lol good luck buddy you can do this!!

greetings young man; plan ahead.......drill and sink your corner anchors prior to wall erection so you can get the tractor auger up close for drilling. sink them all the way even if you have to dig out around the end a little............g
@TKCL4 жыл бұрын
Good point, I normally screw them in by hand and with a pipe. That gets old quickly.
@harryellingsworth83024 жыл бұрын
@@TKCL By Hand is the best way, if you use the tractor you may bring up soil while screwing them in the soil, I have put lots of earth anchors in, 4" up to 30" and as deep as 30 ft. in Muck, sand, Clay and Clayey Sand, but i would put them in before putting the walls up. Worked almost 47 years in the soil testing business, and have tested pull-out on all types of Earth Anchors. Just saying

Excellent engineering. In N AL were get the big tornadoes form time to time but that looks super strong even for here. Good work

I can't imagine you rest well when those storms start rolling through. I'd much rather deal with a hurricane, at least I can see it coming from days away. I guess we get to prepare for both now. This spring was the worst breakout of tornados I can ever remember in my area. Had a friend get hit about 20 miles away just a few weeks after we did.

Here in Australia, well at least down south, it's not so much cyclones we need to worry about but bushfires. We live on a dead end dirt road. Only one option for escape. Our plan is (and was last time) always go early and get the animals on board and get out and let insurance sort it out afterwards if it's the worst outcome. We haven't got an underground bushfire shelter yet but we are considering it as an absolute worst case last resort. The thing that stuck with me reading about them is every single thing that you put in that shelter is consuming space that would otherwise be holding breathable air. I guess you don't have that worry with tornados. But something to consider if it's going to be a shelter sealed air tight and you're going to be sitting it out for a while. I totally feel you and your desire to have this thing built tough.
@TKCL4 жыл бұрын
Man that sounds scary, I've seen those fires a lot in the news. If you built your shelter, could you put some oxygen or scuba tanks in there? That would give you a long time of clean air and allow you to protect some belongings. By far the scariest thing about tornados is usually there is little to no warning. The one that hit us we had about a 90 second warning from an alert on our phone.
@davegamble33094 жыл бұрын
@@TKCL I'll have to look into tanks. Could be an option 🤔 most of our fires start with lightning then you're at the mercy of the wind. Very much luck of the draw. The last ones if the strikes had been a bit further west or the wind didn't change would have come straight through our place rather than down the edge. Further south we'd have had no time to react. Worst part is that good luck for us is bad luck for someone else. Looking forward to seeing the build progress. 🙂 On a happier note to finish there's a strong chance my new green and yellow seat could arrive this week. Fingers crossed 🤞

Following your build on the shelter. Not sure if this applies to the screws you’re using, but in general, screws tend to snap in tornadic winds, whereas nails do not. Hopefully they are never put to the test, or if they are, that they are rated as high as nails are. Very interesting series though… stay safe.
@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
Those are extremely thick and very expensive screws. Should have a lot more shear strength than standard screws. These were listed in the engineered plans.

Wow man that's going to be a strong shelter. I always known for tornado shelters to be in the ground. I am so interested to see how this is going to turn out. I know it's going to be good cuz it's coming from the best. Those were some long nails you got. Man your RPM gauge in your tractor look the same as mine in my truck.🚛 . For a minute I thought when did I recorded my RPM gauge in my truck 🚛 ."LOL" project coming along nice man.

There's a lot of above ground storm shelters out there. Problem is they cost thousands to build and then ship to you. I'm trying to do the best I can with what I have. No doubt it will be strong.

Thanks Doug, I never ever considered a shelter. After getting hit by a tornado and knowing we always need to stay put for future animals. I decided to change my mind and build one. I'm not big on running from hurricanes, this should allow us to stay put and check on our property/animals during and immediately after a storm.

Definitely a strong design. And it’s bit late by now, but I do wonder if it wouldn’t just be better to lay then flat on your slab one layer at a time and overlap joints (with gluing nailing each layer). Would be slightly thicker wall and would require more layers to get desired height of wall. You would also have more overlapping on corners, each 1-1/2” vs 5-1/2”.
@TKCL2 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but it would be almost impossible to get a smooth and straight wall that was as most 2x wood is bowed.
@UserError78612 жыл бұрын
@@TKCL yeah, bowed or twisted lumber is always a problem. Guess laying them flat would work better with new lumber.

Think about a mini-split for it, I feel like a window unit would compromise all of that structural strength. A mini split gets one small hole for the copper, and electrical, and you don't have a decent sized hole in the side of the shelter.
@TKCL4 жыл бұрын
Good point, but hard to pass up cheap window units. I plan to reinforce the opening with thick 3 inch angle iron and then have a fold up thick steel door inside should we feel the AC could get torn out. I'll price a small split unit again, they were high years ago when I looked.
