The stance of the truck looks good where it is. Notch the frame! That is easier than re-drilling the bat wings and dropping the front axle to get back down to the same ride height. I would drill the hole up as you still have the weight of the starter motor, radiator, water, manifolds, anything else that needs to go on the engine and your self as you sit in it. Looking good, as usual! Suggestions to increase travel in front suspension: 1)Shim between cross member and spring. Drill a hole to just clear the spring bolt, possibly using a longer spring center bolt. OR 2)Add a leaf or maybe two to the spring pack. 3)Go to an axle without as much drop. or of course, drill another hole in the two bat wings.

With the height of ride right, I'd notch the frame ends, I have seen them going past the front anyway and its not structural so just do it, its yours. Cucumbers for the valley as you can can pickles and what not but eating that many greens would gas me to the moon. They show no sign of slowing down in coal dust so it might just be the very nutrition that little (soon to take garden over as they spread out and hang to the sides of the low spot in garden... Heck, I have seen them hanging on chicken wire and doing good, supposed to keep those little feelers near dirt but didn't slow those behind house down. Gonna be a "finished for you know it" thing and then the next one will be the next one!! You don't like the travel on the front then hang some torsion bars to the front and sides on the back

I lean strongly to the half tubes welded in the chassis. Evan if you raise the chassis the half tubes will still look fine. You could weld an alignment plug on those 1/4" spacers and shim the spring a little to get your 2" space. Personally I would want 3" for here in New England because the roads are poorly maitained. I know which ever way you decide to go it will look good and work well. Those straight 8 Buicks had a load of lowend torque so 2:78 to 3:25 gear with a Ford T5 will work just fine. 2:78 was the standard gear in a 5.0 Foxbody 5spd. I'm really enjoying this build. By the way I kinda miss young Noah. Keep healthy!! Dave

Hey Johnathan: the only thing I've found to keep the bee's from eating my wood, is to paint it with used motor oil. Trying to figure a way to mix the drain oil with diesel fuel to thin it. Then find some way to spray it on the wood. Let me know if you have any ideas, or make a video of it.

Had a friend that used a 50/50 mix of old oil and diesel fuel. He used a weed sprayer ( hand held of course ) and soaked his rather large barn he built . I have since moved away so I do not know if it worked but, at the time it looked good. He was an etymologist so I figured he knew what worked. Hope this helps some people.

My opinion move the spring mounts on the plates to the right height A 1 1/2 inches. They are a heavy motor compared to the original. or can you throw in another couple of leaves. Then you end up needing longer mounting bolts and centre bolt. It looks good. The starter body gave just the right radius too.

@ericpierce41734 жыл бұрын
Just a suggestion: don't alter your current front suspension until you've got the shocks installed and radiator in place. The new spring will settle a little but the front suspension really doesn't deflect as much as you'd expect if you are using shocks intended for the front end; rear application shocks are valved differently and might allow the front to compress too far. If you've got 1 1/2" of clearance you might be just fine. Also...with a long-wheelbase hot rod you've got to keep the frame angle 3 to 5 degrees down at the front for the car to look sleek. Otherwise it will look like a long lumber wagon. Keep up the good work!

@garynantais64094 жыл бұрын
Jonathan, the "Bell" style dropped tube axles have pressed in forged ends that are welded to the center tube. When these get chromed there is a special process that needs to be followed so that they don't crack on the weld joint. I think the problem is called "Hydrogen Embrittlement" which is a weakening of the ductility of the metal due to the chrome process. I don't recall what needs to be done to prevent this but I think some kind of heat treating after chroming. In your case the only chance of cracking would be due to a poor quality weld on the axle. The heim joints at the frame should allow more then enough movement to prevent binding.

Hi Johnathon.....Many are saying Notch the frame because you like the height right where it is....but they may not be taking the extra weight of the steering linkages into account nor the steering box along with the weight of the radiator, the antifreeze, headlights, headlight brackets, intake manifold and carbs plus the exhaust manifold and pipes. Sure separately these things don't weigh that much but together they add a goodly amount of weight. I suggest you drill 2 more adjustment holes in your batwings ......Easier to do than notching the frame AND 2 holes gives you more adjustment for weight .
@MrGazzw4 жыл бұрын

Maybe you could try a thicker spring in the spring pack? As far as I know that straight 8 weighs about 700 pounds or more. That's a good bit of weight on the nose of the frame. If you could've set the engine back more it would have put more weight toward the middle. But, it is what it is. So, going by my experience, it seems to me the best thing to do is add a couple more leaves to the spring pack. To me, it seems safer that way. If you have an old pickup around there with good springs in the back, take the spring apart and cut them to fit. If they have the right amount of "bow" in them? Just an idea. You might can get extra leaves from the place you bought the spring from? I can almost guarantee you will not like it the way it is when you start driving it. It will most likely turn on its door handles. Scary to drive with all that weight on the nose and a soft spring upfront. Good luck with it. I enjoy watching.

*If the feel you wanted the Rod's look was where you had it, prior to dropping the weight, correct it and get back that look with new holes in the Batwings. For showoff you may then choose to drop the rig. For driving you may choose to raise the rig. Were you on really rough roads, you may want an even higher front ride. Having the built in adjustability provides flexibility for road conditions as may show up. You can make all of that it look good too! You know that.*
