The internet! Knew Kemp's but the other two are new to me. If only Bing, Ballew or Bowlly had taken Skinnay's place in my tin-eared world. Thank you.

All are great -- love this tune, with its marvelous chord changes -- but my favorite has to be the Kemp, with Bunny's arresting recording debut, proclaiming a new jazz genius. Crazy Jack is, of course, terrific on the Kirkeby, too.

Competition is hard because the three are terrific. When I listen to them one after the other I would say that Kemp and Berigan’s sounds ahead its time but Jack Purvis’ style is definitely which I like the most, therefore my vote is for Kirkeby!

Kemp's has more fallow patches. Later, I always feel it drags on a bit while the other two have more surprises and unexpected.. fireworks?

Couldn't find the Kemp version in the Book, to see if Columbia had the resources to record 3 versions of the same tune for their various labels. Something they seemed to do all the time. Money no object - until it ran out :-) Great transfers, many thanks.

Brunswick was then under Warner Bros. management, so that was one less version for Columbia to carry...

I WOULD KILL To Find All of Columbia`s, And Brunswick`s, Victor`s Unissued Takes! I bet that there is some Songs that will BLOW You out of Your shoes! I Have the Third Record! AND THIS Sounds FANTASTIC!

Morgan manages to keep the jive to just two 4-bar solos (plus a couple of perfectly straight alto breaks) in an arrangement that's nonetheless variegated and rhythmically intense. He is helped along by the presence of a full 5-piece brass section, with both trumpet trio and trombone duet spots...and by the band feverishly tearing into every phrase as if they meant it. In fact, I'm convinced they did. That said, each rendition is more righteous than the last here.

One of my favorite songs, I have the Hal Kemp Brunswick 78, never heard any other versions, many thanks. Edit: Just played all three. Kemp still the best but this Kemp is an alternate take for sure, less polished than the original USA release. Probably British pressing or whatever, but the clams in it show it to be a true alt.
