Nice work as usual! Process is coming along nicely. At the time of this message there was one person that gave your video a thumbs down, I wish they would have said why they didn't like it maybe there's something you didn't touch on.. maybe it was the process of putting the top deck on I don't know.. Right or wrong my father and I set ours on by hand, we got the shift forks and gears lined up by measuring off the front of the housing. But we had the line of where the top deck was sitting as ours was not sandblasted clean.. we had some various-sized Square stock that we could put in between the deck and deck plate.. FYI.. I have made a lot of gaskets out of beer box material, I have not had an issue yet using it LOL Stay safe my friend

Yes, each video seems to get one or two thumbs down consistently. I am not sure the reason, but I can't improve without knowing. I do the best I can - keep in mind I'm learning as I go as well. Some of it I am re-learning as was the case today in putting the belt pulley back together, lol. Cereal, soda, and beer boxes make great gasket material. And it's very inexpensive, available in large sheets! Glad to hear you enjoyed. If I did it again, I would use some pieces of threaded rod and use them as guide pins so you could get the plate close, align your gears and forks, and drop the deck into place. Would be nothing to it!

When I look it up, all of the sliding gears as well as the constant mesh gear are available through steiner. If you're looking for countershaft gears I am not sure what is available new. The bearings I cross referenced and ordered through a local bearing supplier, or found some NOS on eBay. The only one I couldn't cross reference was the Hyatt roller bearing which serves as the pilot beating for the front of the top shaft (rides inside the input shaft). Just to let you know, to replace all bearings and seals in the rear you're looking at easily $1000... Add the price of new gears on top of it.

Hey Kenny, FYI A potential source for that PTO seal/ o ring you couldn't find might be Caterpillar. They have a multitude of o rings in all different sizes, they might accidentally have what you need. There are also o ring making kits that consist of a long length of o ring material, you measure the length you need, angle cut the ends, and glue it together with a super glue type adhesive to form your ring seal. Just for future reference sir, I know you have a lot of projects where this information might come in handy. You did good working by yourself, have a good day!

That is kind of what I though after the fact - could use the same method for the top cover. A few pieces of 8" threaded rod to act as guides. Set your gears and forks where they need to be, and you can drop that cover right down and you know it won't be shifting. Really wasn't too bad to do with the floor jack and engine hoist. Good to know about the O-ring. The one that was on there was still in very nice shape, so I think a little RTV will help. But, for future reference, I will definitely look up those O-Ring kits!
I watched this at night and came to it to comment. I would think that some long pieces of all thread in your threaded holes. should help you align every thing while you have it suspended by your engine lift.
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch3 жыл бұрын
All thread would probably help, but I was learning as I went with this project. When I do the Case SC, it will be a little bit different I think.

@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch4 жыл бұрын
They are a lot easier to remove with the carriers removed, but can be done without removing the carriers. The methods I have seen done involved drilling 4 holes in the existing seal, and running sheet metal screws down into them to act as a puller. The sheet metal screws bottom out against the pinion carrier casting, and push the seal out. Just make sure you tighten them down at a fairly even rate to pull it out as effectively as possible.

Decided to adjust the carb on my H today because last owner said it hasn't been touched since 1987 lol. Might pull it apart, when i screw in the it will eventually die (which is normal) but when I back it out it won't get rich no matter how far I back it out. Runs excellent tho which is weird
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch4 жыл бұрын
Won't hurt to pull it apart and do a good thorough cleaning. The H carburetors are pretty simple. Be VERY careful with the idle drip tube. If you can get a small wire through it, you are better off leaving it in place as many times they are ruined when people try to remove them.

Yes - the axles and bull gears are HEAVY and difficult to handle by yourself. An M would be even more challenging since everything is bigger and heavier. It can be done with some thinking, though!

Hey Kenny, I am really enjoying these reassembly videos. It is really nice to see how stuff should look and the tips before I get to this stage in my project. I apologize if I missed it, but I am curious as to why you are replacing all the bolts? Keep up the great work!!!
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch4 жыл бұрын
I am very glad to hear you find this helpful! My advice to everyone is always to take photos prior to each stage of disassembly so that you know how it will look when going back together. I am replacing a lot of the "easy to find" bolts simply because I have gift cards to the local hardware store so I figure why not. There are some bolts that are specific lengths that cannot be found unless you have them made, so those bolts will be reused.

Question for Kenny or any other: What exactly does the grease fitting on the outermost axle housing do? Probably would have been better asked in the previous video where it was shown. Nevertheless, it looks like the grease path is on the outside of both the seal and outer bearing. So, what does the grease at this location do? It looks like that outer bearing is lubricated with the fluid in the differential housing.
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch4 жыл бұрын
The grease fitting will force grease into the bearing, there is a passage drilled towards the bearing itself.. The bearing is shielded on the inside, so oil does not get to it directly. At best, it is splash lubricated, but still is not lubricated directly due to the shield.
@huntingandstuff94894 жыл бұрын
Would it be easier to use a couple longer bolts to start pulling those axle housings in? Just an idea I had
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch4 жыл бұрын
It might be easier, but the tough part is getting the bull gear started on the end of the axle. Both items are HEAVY, and to wiggle each one handed is a challenge.

Yes, you can. It is more of a challenge getting it aligned with the countershaft on installation, but a lot of guys slide a piece of 4 foot pipe on the end of the pto to help balance the weight as you slide it in. It makes it much easier to handle.

There is a large cross pin (approximately 1/2" diameter) just under the dust cover on the top of the shifter. Usually, there are two drill plugs on each side. Drill the plugs out and then push down on the shift lever to release the spring tension. The pin should slide out, then pull the shift lever assembly out as a unit. Very simple once you get those drill plugs out.

Nice video Ken. It's beginning to look like a tractor. How hard was it to aline the shift forks to to slots on the sliding gear sets? Cause it looks like you run out of room fast as you lower the top plat into place. Love watching this kind of stuff....
@KennyKizzleRustyNutzRanch4 жыл бұрын
It was pretty simple, you can get the gears real close to where they need to be prior to getting the cover too low. I'd recommend threading in maybe four 8" pieces of threaded rod so you can raise the top deck into position, and it will then have a guide as you lower it so it doesn't move. That way you can raise it up and adjust the gears to match the shift forks and everything is locked in position.
