I think it's good to mention that this particular model was in production since 1936; with its 100 mph (160 km/h) top speed and 19 mpg (12.5 l/100km) it was kinda ahead of its time.

If you like this car, you may also want to look at the work of documentarists Hanzelka and Zikmund, who travelled across Africa and Latin America with Tatra 87 between 1947 and 1950 (they left democracy and came back to one-party regime). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanzelka_and_Zikmund

I was a little kid back then, i don't remember much, except it was big and had a comfortable suspension, so no fast cornering, i suppose, but in the straight line it was faster than almost anything else on czechoslovakian roads, despite it already was an old car in early 80s. Unfortunately, the car didn't end well, some guy who did maintenance took it for a test ride and wrecked it :( We had a Lada after that and it was horribly uncomfortable, especially compared to the T603.

I love Tatras and this one is beautiful. The timeline seems to be a bit off, however. It sounded like he indicated that Dr. Porsche got his ideas from this (1947) model and started building beetles a couple of years later. Move that back about 15 years, the VW factory was built in the mid 30s and Porsche had worked with Hans Ledwinka (designer of this car) before that time. As far as the unibody construction, Citroen was first with the Traction Avant of 1934, They purchased the equipment to make the bodies from AMI/Budd manufacturing in the United States. It was front wheel drive. The Tatra was more sophisticated in it's engine design, featuring overhead cams on each of it's two cylinder banks. It was also very tail heavy and could break loose very suddenly in turns, especially to someone unfamiliar with it, which the invading Nazis learned when they commandeered them.

Elizabeth Cherry, was the engine actually cast from pure magnesium? Or was there a metal amalgam which included magnesium? Or was it just a plating? In any event, that's very interesting.
