1965 Buick Riviera Gran Sport Driveline Vibration Diagnosis and Repair

The owner of this car was at his wit's end with getting his vibration repaired. I told him to bring it by one day and we would take a closer look. Honestly, I'm surprised no one else caught the problems that I found. Check it out!

This was a common problem way back. I had purchased an1965 Electra. The party I purchased it from said nobody could figure out the vibration. Upon driving it home I immediately took out the whole drive shaft and left it a the machine shop. The machine shop replaced the center support bearing that was worn. Since the shaft was out I had them replace all the u-joints. Problem solved. turned around the car in six weeks and made $3500 profit.

Center support bearing or one of the 2 CV joints. Theres a steel ball in the center of each CV. it wears. Requires a needle grease adaptor to lube. Once its worn theres no repair or replacement

Same thing happened to my 62 I bought in January. I had to have a custom driveshaft made because the CV joint ate itself. For this 65, the custom DS was already made, but the center support bearing (carrier bearing) rubber was torn, causing the shaft to wobble.

Good job Adam, all good to know. Do you think that bound UJ helped take out out the carrier bearing support bushing? It's funny, because once you got the carrier secure, the vibration became far worse. Probably like what the customer had felt early on. Cheers.

Driveshaft shop said that since the shaft had two slip joints, it needed a polyurethane carrier bearing, rather than a rubber one. So we went with that, but as you mentioned, the vibration was much more prevalent. Several issues compounding into one big one here.

Way back in the day, I has a '60 Chevy Impala. Loved the car, but it kept eating center support bearings! I had the car for 3 years...replaced the center support bearing twice. Finally sold the car In looking at 63-65 Rivieras, seems like they have the same issue?

I think what I'm finding is that if you're blowing carrier bearing rubbers all the time, there is another issue there that needs attention. Whether it's the double cardan joint that's worn out, or this crazy issue I found on the Riv...or another combo of issues. This one was a tough one to figure out, but I'm glad I found it.

With two piece drive shafts if they were not marked before dissasembly they may be out of sink

That was a consideration at first. And I had the driveshaft shop check balance on the assembly when they installed the poly carrier bearing.

@@lrlforfun I'm not sure why the threads of the pinion were hitting the U joint. But it fixed it when I ground them off.

It was more than just the center support bearing. That had been replaced at some pint to try and fix the problem. The real problem was the pinion interfering with the u-joint. Causing heavy vibration and tearing the support rubber.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.....so beware of such cars in the future. :-(((
