Hey. Thanks for tuning in! If you can't find what you need here- search the part number- probably find it on ebay. Thanks again ! www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1971&hp=40&model=40E71B&manufacturer=Johnson§ion=CARBURETOR

I seen those Chinese starters on E-bay try one I thought about it myself.Some of Marinengines stuff is priced ridicuouly other parts cheap go figure.Check the piston rings for being stuck out pull the intake bypass covers and see if they move in and out with a blunt tool......they have to flex minutely for proper compression and release...........Sorry I couldnt resist commenting its in my blood,LOL!
@THISOLDOUTBOARD17 ай бұрын
Yeah their up to $50 now. Anyway spoiler alert here. Took the cover off yesterday when Capt Ron was here, he was suppose to bring his drill to turn this motor but forgot it, anyway rings/piston looked brand new, yes they move with a blunt tool, you must be psychic! now don't tell anyone about the rings, its a secret for the next episode. Hahaha! My big harbor freight drill doesn't have enough guts to turn a 20/25 with the plugs in. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Ha!Ha! I bought one of those old big 1/2 chuck drills on Facebook recently $15 Thor works great turning over motors.Havent tried it on a 25HP yet ,LOLL! will see been off the outboards somewhat for a Winter break , weather still shitty here.. sun burned out it seems weeks of cloudy ,cool weather...crazy LOL!

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 I use a air impact wrench with the right size socket like tire installers use (lug bolts), it's never fails, even the cheap ones work..

@mikedurhan99417 ай бұрын
AlbertHalfner2194 is correct (in his comment below). If you have not already done so, make sure your rope starter is timed properly - the rope pulley in the recoil starter being elliptical. Oft times someone will replace the rope and have no clue that it should be timed in such a way that you gain torque during the compression pull due to the elliptical shape of the rope pulley.
@THISOLDOUTBOARD17 ай бұрын
Hey. Yeah, never checked it out good, just assumed it was ok. Definitely not wound enough. Thanks again !

Like anything electromechanical, if it sits unused for awhile, it don't want to work.

Yeah, its Nuckin Futs! Thanks again !
@randymiller16047 ай бұрын
Check the model number you might have a 25 hp and the recoil spring for a 40 hp will fit in that starter and it’s twice as thick also the starter where the rope rewinds is oblong and needs to line up with the marks on the pulley
@THISOLDOUTBOARD17 ай бұрын
Hey. No it's a 20. The spring is crap and not wound tight enough . I think it my have been broken at some point then reused. I'll tear it apart and redo it. Thanks again !
@alberthafner21947 ай бұрын
Hey I may have missed it, but is the starter pulley timed correctly? The elipticle shape makes quite a difference in pull effort if the marks are aligned.
@THISOLDOUTBOARD17 ай бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yeah the pull starter is fine with the plugs out, the spring could use a little tightening. Thanks again !
