The organizers of this competition were Arnold and Franco. they invited bodybuilders from all over the world to this competition and covered all their expenses. They even welcomed those who came from abroad at the airport. So much so that they even paid the rent of the embassy auditorium out of pocket. While living in Munich, Arnold organized another competition, first mr international, with Albert Busek. And most interestingly, Lou Ferrigno, the name arnold constantly teases in pumping iron, is the winner of this competition.

Very well researched. Great job !!! I saw Arnold and Sergio compete in 69 , 70. Never missed a magazine . In 74 I joined the Navy and lost track of a section of this period. Thank you for putting this together. And what a line up indeed !!!

I was there that night. The first bodybuilding show I ever attended. I was 20 years old and absolutely stunned by the posing and the level of talent. I think you are wrong though about Arnold's posing to 2001 a space odyssey. If I remember correctly the lights went dark at the beginning of the show and then a single spotlight highlighted the nights first guest poser Frank Zane. He started posing to 2001 with dozens of flashbulbs going off simultaneously. It made such an impression on me that I vowed that if I ever did a contest I would use the same music. Thanks for the memories though and for finding all of these great photos. PS, In 1995 I competed in my first bodybuilding contest at the age of 41. I posed to 2001 a space Odyssey.

You're probably right, you were there after all. However, according to Dr. Richard Tyler and George Kaye's articles covering the competition say otherwise. These two men were also in attendance for the competition but I suppose they both could have gotten the music mixed up while taking their notes for Muscle Builder. Anyway, it's real cool to hear that you saw this show, were bitten by the bug and eventually competed.

@@retromuscle7052 Thanks, It was a night I will always remember. I was living in West Covina at the time, and drove all the way to the San Fernando Valley to buy the tickets at Franco's Dr's office. I wonder if Frank Zane would remember that show? He is still living.

Great video. It brings back memories for me. In the late 70s / early 80s I met Zane, Grant, Guiliani, Ferrigno, Mike Katz et al. I saw Franco at the 2019 Arnold Expo.

Cool video. I bought my first issue of Muscle Builder in 1978 when it was still hardcore. In 1979 it went a bit more mainstream for mass appeal and the content got watered down and the covers were just relaxed headshots. It got worse in the 80s but Flex came along and I discovered Muscle Mag by Bob Kennedy and it had cool articles.

Great! There were more big names, showing their physiques than the Mr. O. at this time ... 675 for 3 reps and than guestposing - respect Franco, RIP

Awesome. I remember all of these photos. Eddie G. looked super sharp as did Bill Grant. Notice Arthur Jones with Sergio and Dan Lurie. I am sure this is part of the storm that was brewing and would explode for Mike Mentzer in 1980. Lurie was trying to compete with Weider. I remember in the 70's, Arnold (supposedly) wrote an article about how bad Nautilus machines were.

Yet Arnold, Louie, Bill Grant, Franco et al loved the original Nautilus plateloading Pullover and bicep machines. Many of the articles supposed written by Franco, Arnold and others were written by Joe Weider.

@@odessafile75 Franco bought the pull over machine and the plate load bicep/ tricep. Because of that Joe Gold gave Franco free membership.

The biggest Name was Serge Nubert, His Appearance alone was what gave Bodybuilding a huge Public following. Back then, the Bodybuilding Trophies were a sight to behold. To me the most Fantastic Sight was the presentation of the Trophies to the Winners. Bodybuilders would have that Angry Ugly look, when they didn't Win the first place Trophy. Noone wanted a Second Place Trophy. Only The Winner was received Respect, Everyone else was considered a Bum and a loser. Second Place meant nothing to the bodybuilder. I remember seeing the Angry bodybuilders who would throw away all their Trophies that weren't first place. We used to call bodybuilders, The Hercules Mad Men." The Bodybuilding Golden Era was the most Unique Era of all time,, The Herculean Muscle look, was Viewed Upon as possessing Power and Respect. Steroids destroyed that admired image of greatness look.

No way Sergio Oliva could have beat Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1974. Sergio was big but not cut. Sergio was blocky, Arnold had a more pleasing physique and was ripped to shreds.

The WBBG Mr Galaxy was held in Union City, New Jersey. By the way Weider disliked Sergio with a passion and he was not going to let him win over Arnold ever.

Sergio always looked great and massive, like Arnold. But he never had the peak bulge in his biceps, he has that horizontal line where a peak should be, he neglected concentration curls and it cost him.

Dan Lurie was a scum-bag. I know because I bought his heavy set, which came with plenty of junk weights (i.e., extra bars and 50 lb. plates) to make the total weight. Still he wasn't as big a scum-bag and the Weider Brothers. Perhaps that's why Arthur Jones chose Lurie over the Joe & Ben Show: 3:28
