Thanks for the comparisons. The Minimoog sounds so much rounder and fuller. Even the higher notes have richer low harmonics. And they're just so solid without any phasing muddying up that beautiful low end. No harshness either. You don't even have to reach for EQ or compression. So nice!

The tones seem to be pretty similar, but the comparison was difficult to judge as some patches sounded more chorussy due to, I presume the oscillators were not matched detune wise. But as I always say, nobody knows or cares in a mix.
@adam8726 жыл бұрын
That's my view also. Maybe the natural drift of the Moog has an influence there. The digital version will be a lot more precise and perhaps not have the "character" and imperfections of the hardware.

That is some SPICY detune on the Mini. I imagine getting the 1975 original to match the app was a bit of a nightmare but yeah; can't beat the real deal. The app is a clean and effective synth. The Mini is a monster waiting to be unleashed. Awesome video!

The real thing definitely sounds way better, like light years ahead of the app... but the app is only $5. :P The app can also be polyphonic, and it also has the ability to connect to lots of other apps (including copies of itself) self-contained in a much more portable and affordable unit. For someone like me, a musician with limited space who is constantly on the go, the iMini makes way more sense than an actual Minimoog. I think it's important to remember that there's more to a synth than purely its sonic character. I like to view them as two different instruments: -the- classic synthesizer and a modern homage to it, not a recreation of it. Though I look forward to a day where a legit Minimoog could be possible! One of these days I'll settle down. :P Subbed!

Hey Johan, do you hear the differences in the transient response between analog and digital emulation. The I pad version is compressing the attack parts of the note, while the moog is punching them through. You can still here the difference even though this is a digital media.Overall, I think they did a good job, and it would be a useful tool for musicians especially in a live venue, and there is little worry of frequency drift as there was in the original.
@JohanSegeborn8 жыл бұрын

You are doing minimoogs now? Oh hell! I run my model D through my g6g-b! The bass frequency response of the Bassman is very nice, but just lacks the thunder. I got the Bassman for a Clavinet. I found your channel while shopping for the bassman and watch for the les paul work. Now you are doing synths it's the best of both worlds for me. It has recently come up on the Moog Fan Club facebook page if people were using guitar amps with their moogs. How about that Minimoog with a 59 Bassman?
@Ajoura6 жыл бұрын
Well, the app sounds a little bit blurry on the upper side and with mid-to-low being not prominent yet, and that's basically it. One good equalizer - and the real Minimoog is defeated. Not to mention its harmonics sound better just because it's louder overall.

Great video. The Mini Moog has a different sound to the app. The app comes close but there are dynamics that the Mini Moog has that the app isn't reproducing. Funny enough I had a go a couple of days ago with the Moog bass sound from Maschine, the Moog bass sound from my old Yamaha DJX synth and the bass from my Moog Sub37. The Sub37 had a low end that the app and the DJX couldn't replicate. It rattled the room. I also compared a Sub37 to the Mini Moog at my local music store and the Mini Moog sounded brighter than the Sub37 but they both had that low end rattling and shaking the room sound. For me? Got to love the real thing
@BeansMaskSheen7 жыл бұрын
the model D either has more of a "feel" for you or rather..the model D just sounds so much warmer with more articulations and seems to be more expressive, natural, and musical sounding. The single note test is where the Model D really stands out as the ipad version sounds cold, fake, and toy like.

good! good video. it has helped me a lot. I have a problem with the potentiometers on ipad with garageband or minimoog. If I put absolute in the midi control center it never remembers the value that it shows on the screen and always starts from the one that the knob has. If I move the knob with the screen and then manipulate the Arturia, it jumps to the position in which I left it with the Arturia previously. If I use relative it stays in some locked values. I would like to configure the knobs so that they send only to increase the value of the knob or to lower it. thanks for any help!

Honestly , they did a really good job on the app. Single notes they were almost spot on. On multiple note ore chords they just cannot replicate the phase shifting the analog moog does. It's that detail what gives it away. But on tonality , they are right on the money. Though the purist in me would rather play a real moog, but my wallet says something differently. Nice comparison btw. I have to admit. Digital apps and plugins are becoming better at replicating the analog sounds, although it's not quite there yet.

I found the first setting very close, but then on the second one, the app still sounded quite well, but extremely mid-focused to me, while the original sounded amazingly deep; widely spread in spectrum. Depending on the other instruments playing along, I can imagine either of them would have advantages in cutting through a live mix (app), or enriching the atmosphere (original - or maybe the app as well, through a booster / valve pre-amp, as proposed by +PoJoWo; great idea, by the way). If the settings were dialed in the same way (apart from some off-tune examples) then the app shows the typical weaknesses of all copies I've heard so far. The real D sounds edgier and richer. There's something to the basic tone of the oscillators that is fundamentally different in a superior way. The app doesn't come even close to the famous Moog ladder filter (surprise, surprise!) and that alone is a huge deal breaker because you could also use it for other instruments (especially in a recording situation). The sonic sweet spot of the original is much wider. Every copy misses the interaction between the player and the instrument which is an integral part of what makes playing the real D such a great experience. The reissued version is even better than all three versions released in the 70's by the way. The additional LFO allows vibrato sounds while using all three oscillators.

As Bob Moog said it when asked why he gave Arturia the authorization for using his name : it's quite good and very near, _but no cigare...._ (meaning here that as good Arturia software can be this will never replace the sound of the true machine, he was speaking about the Modular and not the Model D but he was certainly thinking the same). I've got Arturia collection and the Mini V is really a good emulation on PC, I don't know if there's a difference with the Apple implementation, this is good, but this is definitively not the feel of the Mini Moog. This is clear hearing the samples in the video. There is some magic with the Moog, something hard to tell but making a huge difference. One day perhaps... a true emulation, with the cigare ... !
@KNHSynths7 жыл бұрын
That's right. Emulations are good enough now to have some fun and Arturia's are really capable. But you don't have $100.000 worth of synths, you just have the _illusion_ to have it ... If you have real synths you can compare the sounds and all emulations are close but no cigare... Even digital things like Roland D50 are not exactly sounding like the real machine. Roland emulations are really good. Their SH101 or System 100 are astonishing. But when you compare side by side, something is missing. So all depend on the use of such emulations. To create piece of music with multiple tracks, effects, etc, they can be really wonderful. On the contrary if you "think" or "believe" you "have" the real beast and try to play it alone just for the pleasure, you'll not reach the same pleasure level than with the real machine. As music is pleasure and emotion, the most important is to get pleasure and feel emotions, the way to get there has finally (almost) no interest !
@KNHSynths7 жыл бұрын
Something seems not logical to me. If you don't care an emulation is sounding the same as the original so why using an emulation ? There are tons of excellent and original VST (Dune 2, Nemesis, Saurus, etc). These softwares are not attempting to emulate a true hardware, they just try to sound good and some succeed very well. But if I use a SH101 copy I want it to sound like a SH101 not like a cheap VST. Roland emulations are not the worst, perhaps the best, but even in this case this is not sounding like the hardware. So _there is no problem using VST instead of expensive hardware_. _I'm using both and I love both._ But all those emulations are a trap. They don't sound like the original. And this is a problem for me. But as I said it, in a complete track with effects nobody will hear the difference. The main problem is just when you play for example the Arturia Mini Moog thinking _it is_ a Mini Moog. This is not the sound and the feeling of a true Model D. And it could be different but better, but it is different because the sound is lacking the most important, the soul of the real machine, the specific grain, particular way to react, etc. Nothing bad since you're aware of this problem and not thinking "I'm playing a Moog Modular !" when using Arturia Moog Modular, no you're playing something different that has not the soul of a Moog 55. Don't even close. But you can use it, it sounds quite good and you can have a lot of fun! Finally it is just a problem of coherence and consciousness. Since you know it is not the same, if you're having fun, that's right. But you can't claim these emulations _are_ a Mini Moog, a Model 55, a xxxxx. They are not. They are something different. One day perhaps emulations will sound exactly the same. The day you will feel the same pleasure when tricking a virtual filter knob than when tricking a true Moog filter, the problem will be gone...
@KNHSynths7 жыл бұрын
Bob Moog has been asked for why he gave the authorization to use his name, and he concludes explaining clearly because "close but no cigare", arturia is affordable, can help you enter modular world, can give you hours or fun, but if you want to get the exact emotion of a real Moog you have to buy one, the emulation will not give you this emotion. For him it was clear there's absolutely no competition, arturia emulations are another world. A world that is not bad or good, just another world far from his own. I can't find again this interview, I never supposed I'll have to use it as a proof in such a discussion, so you have to trust me (or be luckier than me and find it !).
@KNHSynths7 жыл бұрын
I was just asking about the paradox I pointed, you don't have to justify your choice. I'm not judging you. My own reasons were very different from yours I suppose and concerning Arturia collection you'll be certainly surprised but it was an error like some other purchases. When you have the money to buy something without testing it too much you make some mistakes, and I'm fine with it. Once that said I'm like everyone making music I like to be teased by new sounds, so I also have more than 1 Tb of sample libraries or many kinds I bought, using very few but hearing some time to time to get some ideas. Arturia is one source of inspiration like the others, there are tons of presets and sometime playing a sound you discover a melody, a chord progression. And it is really cool. And with the time the Arturia Collection has been improved. For example their Arp emulation is quite interesting. The farfisa is able of very cool sounds (that has nothing to do with a real farfisa sounds but that's another story, or no, it's all the story here !). The Moog emulations (modular and mini) are certainly not the best of the collection. To be frank I rarely use any Arturia emulation in a final mix, I'm always ending with other VST or real synths. I have no absolute conclusion about this but that's the facts. I don"t like their pianos (being wurtlitzer, rhodes or classic) I've some sample libraries that are sounding far better and more realistic. The synclavier is a joke, it was famous because of resampling, like the fairlight, but this feature is not implemented. Today the synclavier is just sounding like a bad emulation of a DX7, historically it is a relic of a transitory technology. I prefer to use the free Dexed VST to get a good DX7 sound. or the FM8 . The oberheim matrix is not that bad but I was not a big fan of this machine even when it was first released. I loved the oberheim SEM and the 4 and 8 voices versions that were real great synths. The Arturia SEM is a good emulation, being very capable and generating interesting electronic sounds. But it is not sounding like a true SEM (no more no less than for the Moog synths). And voilà... This was a mistake, now there are sometimes some interesting things to get from the Arp, the Sem or the farfisa. So I'm buying updates. It is just one tool among others. I'm not sad to have it, it is just what it is. I have other VSTs I'm using very often because they have a great sound and don't try to imitate anything. Else I'm using Moog and Roland hardware synths. Arturia collection is not a bad product, they did a good job, but at no time I'm thinking one second I'm playing a true Moog, a true Oberheim or a true 2600 when I'm playing an Arturia emulation. And I never felt the emotion I had or can have with the real synths. As I was concluding each time, music is emotion and pleasure, no more no less. And the way to be pleased, to feel emotions has no importance, only the resulting emotion has a value. If you feel right with Arturia emulations that's fine, I love when people are happy. I even know some people who have great fun with incredible things such like guitars or drums, so why not a Model D emulation :-)

The original sounds a little better, but it's very close. In a song, where the Mini was drifting out of tune, the softsynth might actually end up sounding better. What's amazing is that now Moog themselves have a MiniMoog iPad app that much better and closer than the Arturia one. I suspect that if you redid the comparison with the new Moog app, they'd be very hard to tell apart.

the real minimoogs oscillators aren't tuned together in some of the examples. i never did like any sounds where the oscillators weren't all on 0. It sounds out of wack to me when not tuned.
@Arperture8 жыл бұрын
Arturia has a bad habit of abandoning it's apps. iMini has been around forever and doesn't play well with some of my DAWS now (AUM). I wish Moog would pull the license from Arturia and recreate it themselves, like they did with the amazing Model 15 app. It isn't quite a real analog Model 15 but the sound is much much closer than the iMini is to the MM.

The iMini sounds great, even if it’s not 100% the same. If you are a hobbyist it’s just the ticket.

I suspect a lot also depends on the quality of the sound card in your computer. I don't know how good iPad's cards are.

+JanPBtest maybe we can do a comparison between the IPad app and the best Minimoog Software on any platform

I think I'm in the minority but I like the app better. It has a more contemporary sound, the hardware one sounds sort of stuck in the 80's sonically. I will admit that you can hear a lot more power in the hardware one though. It looks fun as hell to play

Any chances on comparing the Korg Apps with its analog counterparts?

+José Carlos Dávila Yeah, we can do that. I love the iMS-20 and the iPolySix. Cheers

Whilst there is little difference, though the minimoog 1975 sounding a little better. I can bet that if you were listening to in person it connected to an amp, it would blow your socks off. Remember you are listening to an analogue synth but having the sound digitised and replayed digitally via your tablet/phone/computer so it has lost the analogue warm sound that you would normally hear in

To me it sounds as if you didn't detune one of the OSC on the real Moog.. this makes the Ipad version sounds bigger !

I prefer the analog warm sound of the 1975 minimoog. But the app it's not bad.

The hardware device sounds superior in many ways in my cans. Warmer, fuller, I closed my eyes and easily picked the analog version each time.
@polbecca4 жыл бұрын
The original has some hard to define but noticeable differences. It has a kind of latency, as though the filters had to be charged up each time a note is played; the app is very immediate. The original also seems to have a richer harmonic quality, more overtones perhaps, but at the same time it doesn't sound as trebly, as though its circuits are bleeding away the highest frequencies.
@mschorer5 жыл бұрын
The Minimoog sounds much more beefy and dirty than the App in almost all patches! Always would go for the original. I think your Mini needs some tuning and trimming the key follow of the oscillators. They drift quite a bit. But then again, maybe this is wanted.

how does this compare with the Animoog or model 15 app sound wise
@JohanSegeborn7 жыл бұрын
+Issie wizzie I haven't played the model 15, but I've heard it's a great emulation. I really like the Animoog , but since it doesn't have the standard knobs they're hard to compare.

of course the hardware synth sounds better, but a decent one will cost you $3-5k, whereas the app is $10. It all depends on how much you REALLY want that original sound

At around the 5 minute mark the emulator sounds too perfect, it sounds like they forgot to emulate the notoriously sensitive analog oscillators drifting very slightly at random which makes the real deal sound more fat, rich and alive.
