i luv the build, because i'm building a 79 AMX myself. Using the basic route you have taken. doing some suspenion upgrades, because the car was street raced alot. my AMC 360 isn't stock. but i would like any updates on interior parts or lens. people don't relies the performance that AMCs have if built right. luv all AMXs , AMX Spririts just need some respect in car world. real nice ride LOU.

Awesome video Lou!! I've gotten a bit used to seeing videos on rare 6-packs, L-88's, W30's etc, but one could go YEARS (DECADES!) without seeing a Spirit AMX. Even at a car show, I'll bet 9 out of 10 people don't even know what it is. These cars recieved no love even when new, but I'm glad that Mopar fans have embraced their AMC step-brothers. This was the most fun video you've ever done. Most guy's pamper their restored muscle cars like they're made of glass, this guy beat that car like a rented mule! I love it!!

I always loved the Spirit and Concord even though they were just marginally rebodied Gremlins and Hornets. That black car is beautiful. I remember these when they were new and it is amazing how just minor tweaks on the front and rear really made these cars look special. Thanks for sharing, Lou!

This car has a place in my heart. As an 18 year old, I drove from Biloxi, MS to northern PA with an Air Force after we had both finished tech school. The first long road trip I'd ever taken. In a late 70s AMX.

That's a truly impressive AMX! I am even more impressed that it has a 360 under the hood, even though _no_ 1979 AMX's ever left the factory with anything larger than a 304. I'm sure the owner had little difficulty getting that 360 under the hood, since the 1979 Spirit AMX dated back to the 1970 Hornet and Gremlin, and the Spirit was basically a Hornet/Concord with a chopped-down wheelbase to accommodate its hatchback body. Remember, the Hornet came with a 360 from 1971 through 1974 (the SC-360 Hornet of '71 comes to mind). Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised to come across a Gremlin with a 360 (or maybe even a 401?). Boy, the possibilities are endless! It's a shame AMC dealers and owners got screwed over when Renault stepped in and turned the company into a shambles. (At least the Jeep line was still going strong, and, because of that, Lee Iacocca of Chrysler Corporation took AMC out of its misery and bought out the company in 1987.) Well, anyway, thanks again, Lou, for another classic car story, and Merry Christmas! _(12/21/2022)_
@rcwilliam7567

What is nice is the 290-401 amc is all dimensionally the same from the outside. Taking a factory 304 car and putting a 360-390-401 is as simply as swapping it in. The v8 fit pretty well in these cars, I run headers and a mini starter in the car in the video

Lou, as a LIFELONG👈🏼 AMC enthusiast, I applaud your interest and features thank you. An interesting fact: in 1979, the BF GOODRICH racing team took 2 basically stock Spirit AMX'S to the 24 Hours of Nübergring and won - yes...won their division. One of the drivers was the actor James Brolin. True! Please Google it. It is a great story. The V8 Spirit AMX was/is a highly underappreciated car. For the times the car had decent power to weight and could really scoot. Your guest really has his set up really fine!👌🏼 Thx again Lou.

Now there's an oddball! It's rare to see an AMC Spirit AMX package. This car is impressive indeed! The 360 engine sounds extremely healthy, and the 4-speed makes it even better. Interesting that the the Chrysler guys include the AMC product in the Mopar events. AMC was an amalgamation of Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson. They acquired Kaiser Jeep which started out as Willys-Overland and was briefly known as Jeep Eagle before being fully merged with Chrysler in 1990. The Jeep Cherokee (and Grand Cherokee which was on the drawing board) at the time of the merger included "DNA" from Renault, as did the Chrysler LH models that were born from the AMC Premiere design. I have heard some car guys refer to AMC as standing for "All Makes Combined" because of their use of componentry from the "big 3" makers, particularly in the 1970s. Nevertheless, AMC produced some interesting (and uniquely oddball) cars in its relatively brief history.

I always found lumping AMC in with Mopar to be strange as well. Especially with all the bad blood with how the merger went down, and what Fiat/Mopar did to the Jeep brand after the quit running the AMC Jeeps in the early 00's. And it is crazy to think the XJ/ZJ/YJ were the last AMC products ever made. People like to hate on AMC but truth be told they were consistently miles ahead of the big 3, especially in terms of longevity and innovation. That being said this AMC is one I would dearly love to own, especially with the manual and 360! Typically that body style had the 258. Great motor but not really a race motor right out of the factory. Not really the best carb/intake manifold for performance.

Reminds me a bit of my family's black '81 Eagle SX/4 that served us well for 14 years, although that engine was just a mild Iron Duke 4 banger! My Mom still recalls her Eagle with fondness and it was one of the cars my brother and I learned to drive on. Rarely ever let us down. In a similar sort of vein, check out these two 401-powered Gremlins listed by this dealership. Both very much in the "Spirit" of this gentleman's fine AMX, while also reminiscent of the fearsome 401 and 360 Gremlin conversions fielded by Randall Rambler of Mesa, Arizona. Kind of AMC's answer to the handiwork of Motion, Nickey, Royal Pontiac, Grand Spaulding Dodge, Tasca Ford et al. They were few in number but absolute street and strip terrors like the Motion Vegas. Imagine shutting down your local Big 3 competition in one of these little devils. Oh, and the valve covers on the Plum Purple one absolutely rule. www.garagekeptmotors.com/vehicles/2779/1972-amc-gremlin-x www.garagekeptmotors.com/vehicles/2776/1973-amc-gremlin-x kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJLYaYSuYqyikM0 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qanFkn2ViNZohNE

Neat & rare car, Lou! Soo..this is a hot rodded AMC Eagle, wow..I'd never heard of this beast. Hmm, too bad it isn't 4x4 like the Eagle, cept with more beans, aha..but it's ok, seems like a fabulous runner! Reminds me of a mini version of the Aspen & later gen road runners. Thos can be made as fast as the earlier cars with a cam & not much else. / A way to avoid a broken U-Joint in prep for clutch dumps is to pre load the driveline a bit..if there is slack..that can be bad, ahaha. / Merry Christmas, Lou & God bless ya'll!

I like Ronnie as much as the car. Would of loved riding shotgun when cruising around town with him. I also spun a driveshaft doing a burnout, with 1970 Chevelle SS 396, on last senior day of school, so I know that feeling.

They could be auto or 4 speed cars. The vins will prove what they come with factory.. 79 could be had with 258 or 304 in both stick and 4 speed combos. I think the 77 Hornet with 304 option were auto only.

@@rcwilliam7567 With only the 304, it really didn't matter. Bolting it up to a Borg Warner automatic used earlier by AMC would have even been good enough for it. There would be only 2 sensible choices for a Hornet: Either the six-banger or most powerfull V-8 available. Anything in between is just nonsense

@@al_dente4777 72 and up amc v8's used a different crank flange.. After that they went to using the Chrysler based transmissions. The 904 and 727 in mopars are some of the best auto transmissions made in my opinion. I own these cars with a 258 which is a fun driver, to a stock 304 again a fun e car to higher hp v8s on a bottle. Each car is fun in their own way. I even own a 81 eagle sx/4 with a 258 which I turbo charged. Its 4wd and I use it to play in the snow.

@@rcwilliam7567 Did you mean, that they changed flex plates to fit AMC crankshafts to fit the Torqueflites or did they cast different crankshafts for adapting AMC engines to these Torqueflites? I would imagine that it would have been easier to just fabricate a suitable adapting flexplate
